Todd Snider What this festival is all about. He'll make us laugh. He'll make us think.

If I had a song It'll be special. Thats all we know.
Dawes and friends The indie folk rock this newport generation loves
Lucas Nelson and Promise of the real Hugely successful year. May see the best collaborations of 2019 here. Man does wonders with a guitar.
Gregory Alan Isakov Always pops up in chill indie folk playlists. So yes.
Yola Expect a special set if on a smaller stage. May be the talked about set. Others i won't miss if possible Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle Loving what i hear Phil Lesh Legend
Our native daughters Rhiannon killed it last time. They will honor long ignored stands of American society And Jeff and Kacey and Lucy and Maggie and Trey and I'm with Her and..... and...... I give up. This is too hard. There will be conflicts.
Never been, but I love Beacon so now I'm also considering heading up for Mavis and The Lone Bellow
The Lone Bellow just played last year, so I'd say chances are on the slim side they're back. Unless they've got a new album ready or potentially if they wanted to do one of their acoustic trio shows on the harbor stage
Could see them being around the fest though, and maybe as a part of If I Had a Song
Been there about 8 times over the past 25 years and well worth a one-day visit. If Newport has a laid back vibe, Clearwater is sitting on the porch with Andy after an Aunt Bea dinner.
I recommend it with caveats -- it's a smaller locale, the crowds are smaller and a bit older, the main acts are a step below Newport," and I just thought it was over after so many empty patches at the main stage last year. On the other hand, I got to stand under a tree with Rhiannon Giddens and a dozen people, as she told stories and played an intimate acoustic set before taking to the main stage with a smoking band. I didn't get pushed around once standing up front with to see the Mavericks, who put on a great show; and I decided to run off with Dave Allen and Jimmie Dale Gilmore after their set. The river is beautiful; you can go on the boat; and a singer will think nothing of giving you his ticket to fetch a guitar case from the performer's tent. It's that laid back.
The downside -- a smaller crowd can be intimate; it can also cause some acts to mail in a performance (ahem, Lake Street Dive?). if you want the big tent names, they will be few and far between. This is primarily a folk/grassroots concert of the old and new -- always Paxton and Chapin; Amram and Ani DiFranco; and an Arlo, Josh White, Langhorn Slim, or Punch Brothers thrown in. Locals acts that would play the Museum will be on the smaller stages. But was very happy to see a group like Upstate (Rubdown) after catching them busking in Washington Square Park.
If NFF does wonders with their dollar budget, Pete and Toshi must have simply offered a big thank you to pull in their acts; their producers work with cents on the dollar. Still, I've always felt that if Bruce is to make a surprise appearance it will be at Clearwater, truly Pete Seeger's landing spot. (and was a little irked he didn't come to their aid when they had to cancel the fest a few years ago).
Fewer big names this year than ever, but let's see who Mavis brings. One big plus -- you can pick the day you want to attend, and it doesn't sell out. You can camp there. And many performers play both days making it easier to choose. And, if the whim hits you, bring a guitar, sit under a tree, and you'll get a small following.
The Seeger family has not direct ties with the event anymore
Is there any possibility that Lesh gets a normal NFF length set? Are they even capable of playing a set that short? Maybe an extended set? I’m excited for this set!

They can do something shorter, for sure.
Make it similar to their 2008 Sunday afternoon Bonnaroo acoustic set. They scheduled for an hour and a half and had a solid, enjoyable set.
Here's the setlist that they played there:
Friend of the Devil (Grateful Dead cover) Deal (Jerry Garcia cover) Gone Wanderin' (Jackie Greene cover) Deep Elem Blues ([traditional] cover) Drifting Too Far From the Shore (Charles Ernest Moody cover) Texas Crapshooter Cry Yourself Dry (Jackie Greene cover) Sing Me Back Home (Merle Haggard cover) Till the Morning Comes (Grateful Dead cover) Lorene (The Louvin Brothers cover) Peggy-O ([traditional] cover) Tell Me Mama, Tell Me Right (Jackie Greene cover) Ripple (Grateful Dead cover) Brokedown Palace (Grateful Dead cover)
Encore: Dire Wolf (Grateful Dead cover)
Obviously, I'd expect a lot less Jackie Greene covers but something like that in a short set with some Dead tunes and some traditional/folk songs could be just right.

That was billed a bit different though right? What’s the shortest PLTFB show?

Yeah, it wasn't strictly "Phil & Friends" but I could see them putting together a similar type of set if it called for it. No clue the shortest of the actual band sets, though.
One of the things I love about Newport is the unpredictability of the lineup. Of the last 8 announcements only 2 were on people's Newport Bingo Cards and one of those was the free spot (Lucy Dacus was the other.) Love the discovery process.
Newport Festivals Foundation has made a donation on behalf of Black Belt Eagle Scout to Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls to help support their efforts to honor the hard work and talent of their teaching artists by providing them with a stipend for their work during the summer camp program. Their community of working musicians gives their time each summer to teach campers bass, drums, guitar, and vocals, so they can form a band, write an original song, and experience the empowerment of performing on stage at a local Portland venue
Very very very happy Newport didn't wait to book her. One of the most interesting new voices in the indie singer-songwriter world imo. She's also opening for Julia Jacklin this month, so fingers crossed for her to be added soon too
Figured this would always be the case. It’s a bummer to know that it’s now 100%. The only band I needed to see this year (and I don’t live anywhere near BOCC’s tour route... nor was it at a time I could travel).
But still is a shame that we won’t get Boygenius, BOCC, or the Raconteurs this year.

Not sure boygenius is totally ruled out, right? Julien and Phoebe are both open, Lucy will already be there. They're playing Outside Lands 2 weeks later.

Woodstock, not Outside Lands, right? BOCC is playing Outside Lands.
At the time of their Woodstock announcement, someone on this board posted that there was a tweet or comment from one of them stating that Woodstock was their only booked date.
With that said, they could have been booked after the fact (or behind the scenes, an artist dropped out and Newport proceeded to book boygenius).
Or they could be playing sly.
Or it could just happen (if they’re all invited to the fest and just happen to be around... think about Nickel Creek’s first reunion).
But assuming that tweet/comment exists, I’m going to consider boygenius a no-go for Newport.
"You look like you're listening to every note." - Lady to me during LCD's "final" show 2023: Mar 29 - Guster Apr 6 - Postmodern Jukebox Apr 26 - Father John Misty May 14 - Taylor Swift (Philly) May 17 - Robert Plant and Alison Krauss July 12 - moe. July 16 - CAKE (Portland, ME) July 28-30 - Newport Folk (#12!) Dec 8-9 - Goosemas!
Still missing that Cambridge Folk Fest crossover if that’s a thing that’s continuing.
Unfortunately, most of the big names appear to be unavailable due to tour scheduling: Iron and Wine & Calexico, Lucinda Williams, Graham Nash, Jose Gonzalez, and (maybe) Amadou and Mariam and the Blind Boys of Alabama (I’ll come back to this).
Two bigger names with availability: Richard Thompson (but he’d have 3 other Massachusetts shows this summer...) and Nick Mulvey.
Then there’s a bunch of smaller acts that can’t be ruled out. Still hoping for Tunng (if not Nick Mulvey).
Or I guess Newport could announce an act that would get added to the Cambridge lineup late.
As for the Blind Boys and Amadou and Mariam set, that’s another cool touring act that would have been excellent at Newport. I’m jealous after seeing that it’s a thing. They do have a 2 week gap in their touring schedule over Newport, which is a bit suspicious after promising more dates (and no US dates for the project), but would have to come from Europe and then head back to Europe on each end (and that’s a lot of personnel to bring to the US for just a few shows).

Yeah Cambridge still has artists to announce. So it could be someone that hasn’t been announced.
Newport Festivals Foundation has made a donation on behalf of Matthew to Nuçi's Space. The donation will allow Nuçi’s Space to provide 3 Full Camp Amped Scholarships (2-week program) and 1 Partial Camp Amped After School Scholarship (1-week program) to students in need of financial help. Students will learn how to be in a band, write songs and perform as a group. In addition to music classes, Nuci's Space will conduct Survival Skills Sessions to educate students about the importance of mental health.
