Listening to the new Josh Ritter on NPR First Listen. Really hoping he gets announced soon!
Never heard his music before until a few weeks back. Went to Tennessee to see Glen Hansard, Amanda Shires and Josh in a cave in Pelham. What a fantastic set by all three. Josh was impressive!
Nilufer Yanya was moved to Sunday. Coincidentally that's the day her tourmate Sharon Van Etten is most likely to play
Also brings all days to 13 artists
Pretty happy with this. Was starting to worry that I’d be dealing with some conflicts on Saturday with not much I’m interested in on Sunday.
I was especially worried that she may conflict with Lucy Dacus, and I’d have to choose between two of my most excited for acts.
I just hope that the move makes sense. As in, we’re not down to 17 acts on Saturday while squeezing a 19th in on Sunday (or pushing her into the Museum because of a last minute change in plans that had to be accommodated).
I can’t recall recent NFF alums booking a competitive show during NFF weekend in Providence, but I could be wrong. Maybe they are trying to capitalize on the potential aftershow audience, but seems odd this wasn’t coordinated with NFF in some way.
July 23 2016 - Joan Shelley and Sam Amidon at Columbus. She also played Newport that year.
This one feels different, and I don't think Joan Shelley had played Newport before 2016. Hopefully, we'll see Vile/Mascis at the Fort in some way.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
took a look at the two public clashfinders for NFF this morning and my (theoretical) days are really filling up nicely.
any guesses for today? smaller artist after phos? big holiday weekend splash?
I wouldn’t call Phos a big announcement.
In fact, I would think until Wednesday, we were missing announcements like Phos. I call this the $25-$30 ticket artists that help fill in the middle of the day.

Looks like it was the former, rather than the latter. Would've preferred a bigger splash, but Newport does whatever the hell they want. Regardless, I enjoy discovering newer artists, and will check this one out.
I don't think there has been a big announcement yet, and there might not be any, even if some major "wish list" types do show (ala Robert Plant, Bramdi).
With Friday probably out for me, I have some acts I'd really like to see; only two I must see -- Jade Bird, and the closer on Sunday. I am also intrigued by Maggie. Its time for more "$15 - $30 types" (we might have to amend that...even Lake Street Dive is getting $49 in NY for the cheap seats and Maggie's Stub Hub prices are outrageous). Like the idea of Alice Merton, but she has a two-month window between Europe and the Westcoast that is totally unannounced. My prediction: someone I don't know. That helps
Newport Festivals Foundation has made a donation on behalf of Adia to Jessi Zazu Inc. to provide a songwriting class for at risk children – supporting the students as they learn the craft of songwriting and teaching them how to record their original song for demo submission. Each child will leave the workshop with a recorded demo.

100% agree with that first sentence. Aside from a few acts with multiple albums, this is turned into the 'new music discovery festival' and that's not ideal for an ENTIRE weekend. Kind of reminds me of Dancing With The Stars Season 18 or a "side stage lineup" ... has me saying "who?!" ... 14 announcements to go. Waiting to be blown away.
I'm sure the announced acts have something to offer and i need more time to listen to all of them but I'm hoping for First Aid Kit, Highwomen, Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, New Basement Tapes, Willie Nelson, Dave Rawlings Machine/Gillian Welch, Black Keys (stretch!), Lumineers (likely out), Greensky Blugrass, Avett's, Trampled By Turtles, Old Crow, etc. Any of those.

To be fair, even though I think I set off this convo (with my lack of bands that you would pay $20-$30 to see comment), I wouldn’t say we’re missing big acts. In some ways, we have a lot of small acts and quite a few bigger acts as well (acts that usually get announced at the end of the announcement season). I just feel like we’re missing name-recognized middle of the day acts.
On the higher end: Trey, Jeff, Maggie, Dawes (for at least this fest), Kacey, Phil, and Sheryl. (We probably have 3 of the top 4 - 5 acts for each day already announced.)
Acts in the middle: Marley, Lake Street Dive, Phosphorescent, Lucy, Alankov, Mountain Man, Lukas, Parker, and I’m With Her (maybe Amy Ray Band)
And then a bunch of stuff with little name recognition, few streams on Spotify, buried in the lower tiers of other festivals, someone could argue could play Museum without issue, etc. Not that it’s not good (nor am I complaining). I’m super excited for a lot of it because Newport/Jay crushes it with finding hot pre-trending acts. And maybe Newport is actively doing their best to avoid booking repeats, and in 2019, most of this tier of acts would indeed be a repeat. But it still seems weird thinking it may be 2 o’clock in the afternoon on a main stage and a band with fewer than a million Spotify streams might be playing.

As we wind down to the final stretch, here are the only artists I didn’t know when they were announced.
Liz Cooper , Illiterate , Nude Party and O’My’s.
Pumped for July!
Artists I didn't know:
Adia Victoria
Billy Strings & Molly Tuttle
Black Belt Eagle Scout
Cedric Burnside
Charley Crockett
Illiterate Light
Liz Cooper
Nilufer Yanya
Nude Party
Todd Snider
The O'My's
Yola
Pretty big list...
It’s really interesting to look at the interactions with announcements on Facebook. So many announcements have fewer than 100 (and some fewer than 50) likes and fewer than 10 comments.
I’d agree that that’s a pretty big list for someone who actually goes out of their way to listen to new music (pretty much anyone who spends time on a music festival board); think about the average attendee (but then again, even in a good year the average attendee probably isn’t familiar with many acts that aren’t repeats; so I guess it doesn’t matter too much if they have to explore regardless - I put Lucy Dacus in this category - we’re all familiar with her but probably the average Newport attendee has no idea).
With that said... I would not be surprised to find a lot of these acts playing higher spots on lineups in future years. Very few come across as a Tuck and Patti where you scratch your head (until you realize St Vincent is playing). For instance, Adia Victoria has a very radio friendly sound - I could see her as a future Elle King. Nilufer Yanya is Pitchfork approved. Illiterate Light sounds like most other semi-popular indie garage pop bands and still has an upcoming debut album to leverage.

Maggie Rogers will return to NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on April 23rd and make her morning television debut on “TODAY” on April 25th. The pair of TV performances will come on the heels of her sold-out spring headline tour and her debut performances at Coachella.
On her summer/fall Heard It In A Past Life tour, Rogers will be playing substantially larger venues, increasing the size of her audiences by 300-600% in comparison to earlier plays in many markets. At artist pre-sales in Boston, Nashville and New York City, over 73,000 people queued up for a chance to purchase tickets, leading to immediate sell outs at The Wang in Boston, two nights at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall and two shows at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Rogers also sold out two nights at Austin’s ACL Live at the Moody Theater and is the only artist ever to headline two consecutive shows at Thompson’s Point in Portland, ME. After developing a lovingly cultish devotion to Maggie online, fans are turning out repeatedly for the live experience – and they’re bringing their friends along.
I just don't get this. I saw her at GovBall last year, and she was...fine. Not bad - she has a really nice voice. But nothing about her work jumped out at me as being worthy of this huge groundswell that's happening around her...unless she's somehow taken a huge leap, performance-wise, in the past year.
That Simpson’s pic perfectly captures how out of the loop I feel about Maggie Rogers. I’ve listened to her album twice now and it feels like a slight step above Disney Channel music. Regardless of taste, cause I know mine isn’t always good, but it sounds like it’d be more in tune with Boston Calling’s usual lineup than NFF. But whatevs.
I really like Maggie Rogers. And I am excited for her set at Newport.
But then again, I also really like Taylor Swift, Lorde, Ariana Grande, Carly Rae Jepsen, Ellie Goulding, Sky Ferreira, Selena Gomez, Kesha, Sia, etc.
I’m excited in hopes that her set will be different from the other Americana on the lineup (obviously I like Americana or I would not be going to a folk fest... but given that I only go to one festival every year I like some diversity if possible). That said... if she performs some stripped down acoustic set... I’ll be a tad disappointed.
In the grand scheme of music, it’s hard to know Maggie Rogers staying power. Is she riding high off of this album (from her viral success) and it’s one and done? Or has she done a good enough job at appealing to more discriminating music fan by teaming up with Rostam and making random appearances at Newport, etc?
Loving Adia more and more! Interesting that her website lists the whole weekend.
This is not a wish list -- but, assuming we get an "Unannounced...deleting the obvious names, i.e. Calexico...and omitting the wish list Neil Young types -- will there be a headliner or penultimate out of left field that shakes our little world up, for good or bad? I think those are the most fun announcements. Think out of the box ala Roger Waters / Patti Smith. Folks like Steve Martin or Joan Jett (in the area all weekend with Elle King). Blondie. Counting Crows?

Same. Adia was a good get. So much great music. Hard to keep up. I saw a video today of Lucas Nelson decribing how he wrote the intro to Shallow for A Star Is Born. I could see Sheryl and Lucas signing it. Blondie might play. Doing another featival nearby. They were there for the start of several music genres. First band to have a rap #1. Anyway, for newbies I recommend listening to any band announced. If you don't like them move on. There are several stages. No biggie. This festival is so much more enjoyable if you put a little effort into getting to know the music and seeing if Newport is the festival for you. Jay has told us we'll know the lineup when it's over Sunday night. Every day at the fest top class artists show up unannounced at random so sweating about headliners is futile. Sure, we want to know but having faith is this fest gets rewarded. We're lucky. We often see stars being born.

Yeah Adia is gonna be a great set! Excited for it. I found her last year through “The National”. Her album was produced by Dessner.
Once I saw she was playing Boston Calling, I thought she wasn’t gonna happen.
