I hadn't heard of E.B. the Younger either, but upon a brief listen, I really like it - plus, it's on Sunday, which is by far my lightest day at this point, so I'm happy!
Edited to add: I'm getting a Father John Misty vibe, which is probably why I dig it.
for some background, EB was former lead singer of Midlake and was involved in last year's BNQT "super group" which included Jason from grandaddy, Ben from band of horses and others.
Newport Festivals Foundation has made a donation on his behalf to Greater Denton Arts Council (Denton, TX) to support their Summer Guitar Camp for kids ages 6-14. Funds will be used to offer scholarships for students from low-income families and purchase more guitars, tuners, footstools and craft supplies to accommodate larger camp sizes.
Highwomen on Friday Bon Iver on Saturday (no reason to suspect this; but a lot of us thought this could have happened last year; process of elimination is ruling out other acts I thought were likely like Vampire Weekend and Raconteurs)
Saturday: Bon Iver (Bruce Hornsby sub-headliner) The hardest day to pin a headliner to... but since I feel strongly about Friday and Sunday this is where Bon Iver would have to play. We know Justin plans to come back to Newport. His tour ends in Germany one week prior. He has some lineup connections - Phil Lesh due to involvement in Day of the Dead, Mountain Man because of Amelia, Bonny Light Horseman because of Anais. Hornsby is in Virginia on July 24 and then has nothing until August. I could see JV wanting to bring somebody like Bruce along with him.
Sunday: If I Had a Song (Chance the Rapper sub-headliner) Chance has the one connection to The O'My's and if Bon Iver headlines that will be another strong connection. Chance also recorded his cover of the Arthur theme song with Ziggy Marley which could potentially explain the Stephen Marley lineup addition - although that's kind of a stretch. Ever since the O'My's announcement I've been imagining Chance on the Fort Stage with Pres Hall as his backing band, some gospel singers (Berkley?) and Rhiannon on stage doing her scat vocals.
I could also see the whole program of making donations on behalf of the artists being something that was straight from the minds of Chance and JV since they're so philanthropically active.
As down as I've been on this lineup - although I've mostly kept it to myself because in the end the lineup doesn't really matter at this festival - a set of headliners like this would once again make this one of the best lineups around.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Nice analysis here. I also see the JV connection as well as the O’my’s...and if you go back a couple years, there is Raury too.
Here’s a good question. If this Chance, do they announce it, or keep it unannounced?
I think you have to announce it.
You give Jay/Newport a platform (social media or podcast or both) to discuss how hip hop can be considered a modern day folk music. You let them flip the script. And help those who may have a closed mind better understand the booking decision.
Unless he’s going for the shock and awe factor to recreate a Dylan goes electric moment. But you will have to deal with a bunch of disappointed attendees who are partially responsible for the annual sellouts. Unless he comes on stage before to discuss the reason for booking.

I could see Jay salivating at the opportunity to explain how Chance can be described as a folk artist on the stage on Sunday. Having Chance stick around for the Seeger set would only help to prove it.
I could also see Chance reciting poetry as part of his set like he did in his Tiny Desk performance (or Patti Smith did in her Newport performance)... which would be another interesting way to blur the lines between rap and folk.

The new song he performed on Colbert last year is a good example.

Not a big rap fan in general, or of Chance in particular, although I’d be happy to see him at the fort and I think I’d enjoy seeing him (cause I doubt I’d ever go to one of his concerts otherwise).
All that being said... these unannounced sets are a huge buzzkill. It reminds me of a kid in high school who used to try and sell mystery mix tapes that he curated because he thought everyone would benefit from his taste. I really appreciate the weekends that Jay puts together but I’m not looking to go into the weekend blind. We already buy the tix blind. If he wants to commit to an entire mystery weekend, go for it. Bill it as just that. But there are way too many solid festivals going on now to just accept one that it will be “worth” it.
