Yes, I am. Been a fan of them for a long while. Excited to see their set.
I like them too but this feels like the complete opposite of the environment I'd want to see them in and, thinking of the 100+ other acts I would've rather seen announced today, this bums me out
But there's plenty on Sunday I love and I guess that's just one less conflict to worry about at this point

I'm hoping they do acoustic set like they've done in the past. Then playing at Newport is one of the reasons I'm so excited. I love seeing artists I love get a taste of NFF. Most seem to like it. This act and Todd Snider at the fort are two of my must see sets

I think this makes sense as Portugal the Man are an established act with national exposure, and mid price booking fee. I am still expecting a bombshell of Saturday headliner and another solid mid tier addition to the Sunday lineup.

If Portugal does an acoustic show, that’s exciting. If they do the same mailed in pop set they’ve been doing for 2 years, then it was a pointless booking.

I’m a fan and they help cover several dimensions in which this lineup was lacking: rock, upbeat, indie, band
That said, over the last 2 years, they’ve become a radio station festival band (but so has Head and the Heart and Lumineers), and so my excitement to see them is diminished.
Given that Newport was willing to stray from “folk” for this booking, there are a lot of bands I’d have liked to see in their place: War on Drugs, Modest Mouse, the Shins, Local Natives, Grizzly Bear, the Districts, etc.

I think we can eliminate anything that’s so big, it needs to be unannounced, for Saturday. They still have “more to come” on Saturday and Sunday. Which means it’s all getting announced.

I don't think sets are unannounced because an artist is too big. Roger Waters was announced and that's probably their biggest booking of the 21st century

Why do big names have to go unannounced? Roger Waters was announced and that's probably their biggest booking of the 21st century
I assume they go unannounced because they don’t want the secondary market to blow up. Also, RW was pre-lyte, and pre ticket gouging initiative.

I agree with strawman.
Hasn’t it been the case that all unannounced acts have been due to competitive reasons? I thought Mumford claimed they asked to remain unannounced because they couldn’t justify charging other festivals a much higher rate yet give Newport the same benefits.
My thinking on Bruce as a possibility is that he could leverage the set to help market the release of a new stripped down / acoustic album. Not announcing the set wouldn’t give him the possibility to do so.

One small step for The Man. A giant leap for Sunday.
I think this a perfect booking as PTM is like a chameleon with the ability to fit into many locations. Might have been a wee bummed had this been the Saturday headliner, but Sunday is perfect. A band's hit song can become a little tiiring, but this video of them working with elementary school kids in Staten Island, NY tells me something about these guys. Got to love the last 5 seconds twhgen they admit they had to be told to be quiet, probably by one of the teachers.
Between sets at NFF last year, I talked to somebody who turned out to be a relative of Sharon Van Etten’s. They said she would definitely perform this year. But of course things can change. And I’m still hoping for Andrew Bird!
Blondie Arcade Fire Of Monsters And Men Chance The Rappper
I'd be very happy if its none of those but a similar artist we didn't even guess.
As for Sunday I'm going to guess no big name. Last year I knew people who were guessing every legend ever for Sunday finale repeting the whole 65 revisted all over again. Those sets always end up having loads of amazing artists and wind up being the most memorable and talked about sets of their weekends regardless. Of course a big name is possible but as long as Pete is properly honored and there are appropriate sing alongs it'll be special.

I forgot about SVE. While I want Hop Along and their tour dates keep them available for Newport (and sort of kind of in the area), now that you remind me of SVE, she’s a more reasonable guess for Sunday. She popped up last year for that random Deer Tick after show performance while not actually on the lineup.
I’ve ruled Andrew Bird out due to potential radius clauses with September shows in MA and Boston. But obviously it wouldn’t be the first time someone played Newport with other shows around the area a few months out.
