One small step for The Man. A giant leap for Sunday.
I think this a perfect booking as PTM is like a chameleon with the ability to fit into many locations. Might have been a wee bummed had this been the Saturday headliner, but Sunday is perfect. A band's hit song can become a little tiiring, but this video of them working with elementary school kids in Staten Island, NY tells me something about these guys. Got to love the last 5 seconds twhgen they admit they had to be told to be quiet, probably by one of the teachers.
The kids in that were from PS22. Their chorus played Newport before I started going. Here they were at kids tent appropriately enough.
Edit ftom wiki
The PS22 Chorus is an elementary school chorus from PS 22 in Graniteville, Staten Island, New York City. It is composed of 60-70 fifth-graders, and is directed by Gregg Breinberg. PS 22 is the largest elementary school in Staten Island. PS22 Chorus has performed with a multitude of musical acts (e.g. Katy Perry, O.A.R., Carrie Underwood, Portugal. The Man, and Fifth Harmony) and has had celebrated appearances on numerous national and international broadcasts throughout the years (including the widely publicized performance of "Over The Rainbow" that closed the 83rd Academy Awards), after its videos had gained worldwide attention within the popular video-sharing site YouTube. To date, the chorus's videos have been watched more than 75 million times.
Also, for anyone disappointed by this announcement, “More Announcements Soon” added back to Friday on the daily lineup breakdown section of the website.

So Friday, we have no clue about the headliner. Saturday is this thing, assuming females. Sunday is a sing-a-long with surprise guests? Such a weird announcement cycle this year.

this will likely be a bunch of women's empowerment songs with all/most of the women artists that day (hayley henderckx, jade bird, Lucy dacus, Maggie rogers, mountain man, noname) and a few mildly interesting but always appearing guests (I'm assuming mavis, Margo price, kam franklin, brandi)

Hmm... most likely this will be an all female collaboration but I can't get the Bon Iver thing out of my head since this year just seems so perfect for Bon Iver.
- It would make sense for Bon Iver to go unannounced like Mumford. - As shown in his last album - JV loves the use of symbols to convey cryptic messages. - JV liked the Cook brothers announcement which I believe is the first time he's had social media interaction with Newport since the last time he showed up. - JV created the 2 A Billion campaign to benefit charities involved with gender equality and victims of domestic abuse - we weren't even told the charity that will be benefiting from this announcement which probably means it would be a dead giveaway and they're trying to hide it. - He has plenty of collaborators announced already and could easily bring along Desner or Hornsby or whoever.
It doesn't really matter though. As itrainmonkeys said, it will be great - as every Newport collaboration has been.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Newport: if you like music that you don’t know because they haven’t released it yet or you don’t know who is playing, boy do we have a lineup for you!
the fest sells out with announcing a single act so this is sort of the point right? that it doesnt matter? newport isnt designed to be the sort of fest where you buy a ticket for your top artist or to hear their favorite song.
The issue I find with collaborations is that there is a massive variance in quality. At their worst, they can be unpolished and feel like you’re invited into the musicians’ jam session or band rehearsal. At their best, you get something entirely unique, well rehearsed in the months leading up to the show, and turns out so well that the parties involved consider turning it into an actual project / album (think Watkins Family Hour).
For that reason, while I love the uniqueness that special jam/collab sets bring to a festival, I remain skeptical, especially when they’re in a headlining spot. Especially at a festival that already has two other headliners that are collaborations.

It would be a really really bad look to put up that graphic and then have Justin Vernon be the one who walks out on stage Saturday...
Most likely going to be 4 female musics legends on stage together - make your wagers now
If it's this and not boygenius plus Mavis or some Justin Vernon coordinated set, I'm going to go with: Mavis, SVE (on guitar), Tina Weymouth (on bass) and Rachel Blumberg (on drums)

This is what Friday is though, right? The HighWomen was started as a women’s empowerment group... no? Sure Friday will likely skew more country whereas the list of artists you mentioned for Saturday would more likely be folk/indie. But in some ways, I think you water down the message a little bit with a second set with the same concept.

Oh, I agree completely. Still wouldn't totally surprise me.

I think Sleater-Kinney and St Vincent. I say this because they’ve been in the studio together and Sleater-Kinney’s social media changed today to all black, which means some sort of announcement. But I’d also expect a bunch of female musicians to hop in.
