This is what Friday is though, right? The HighWomen was started as a women’s empowerment group... no? Sure Friday will likely skew more country whereas the list of artists you mentioned for Saturday would more likely be folk/indie. But in some ways, I think you water down the message a little bit with a second set with the same concept.
The Highwomen started as a band
Yea, of course. But...
“In her interview with Variety, Carlile spoke of wanting to see the gender gap in country music addressed before her daughters grew up and wanted to become musicians. “I need my kids to not see that the last two months has been the first time in 10 years that there are zero women in the top 20 in country music,” she said. “What if they like country music, and there’s one woman on the radio? What message is that going to send them? So that’s what the Highwomen is about.”

If Mavis shows up for this set, or if the set has her as the "lead", is it fair to assume that Mavis will be given a headlining slot everytime she has a 0 or 5 in her birthday age?
I first don’t know why you’d keep it unannounced if it was Sleater Kinney, boygenius, Mavis Staples, etc. Even if it was any of the aforementioned acts + guests. Last time Mavis headlined it was announced as a Mavis set with guests,
Are Sleater Kinney and St Vincent really a collaboration, or is it just Sleater Kinney? The upcoming album isn’t going to be named after both of them. That’s also a weird choice for a Newport headliner.
If it was some sort of women’s empowerment jam/set, why not announce as such?
Given all of that, I really have no idea. This is going to be harder to guess than last year’s unannounced set (we at least could narrow it down to 4-5 acts last year). Not to mention, if someone spots a potential artist not already on the lineup in town, nobody will know if they’re there to play with the HighWomen, to guest on someone else’s set, or if they’re part of this headlining set.
In my mind, it has to be big. It has to be big enough to warrant secrecy around the announcement. It has to be big enough to make up for the weakest day lineup in recent Newport history.

its called "*female symbol*: the collaboration"
I think it's pretty clear this is where we're headed. it drums up more curiosity and excitement and will draw people to the set by keeping the artists a secret.
The issue I find with collaborations is that there is a massive variance in quality. At their worst, they can be unpolished and feel like you’re invited into the musicians’ jam session or band rehearsal. At their best, you get something entirely unique, well rehearsed in the months leading up to the show, and turns out so well that the parties involved consider turning it into an actual project / album (think Watkins Family Hour).
For that reason, while I love the uniqueness that special jam/collab sets bring to a festival, I remain skeptical, especially when they’re in a headlining spot. Especially at a festival that already has two other headliners that are collaborations.
Just keep in mind what you posted last year after the festival was all done (on another year where you were skeptical about parts of the lineup).
I know I was cynical of this year’s lineup. And my cynicism carried to the boards, and with it, some negative energy. I’m all for holding Jay accountable; he asks us to invest in the fest, so, in the tiny off chance he reads these boards, I think it’s worth having critical discussions about the lineup.
With that said, sometime Sunday morning (likely after having a catharsis at the War and Treaty set), I realized some of you had been right all along: “In Jay We Trust”. Once again, even with a seemingly weaker lineup, he delivered a festival for the ages. One, in which emotions were felt at the end of each day. I witnessed Phoebe Bridgers - who likely woke up without any idea what was about to unfold - take stage during the headlining set with Mumford and Sons and then again with Mavis Staples. I saw Caamp almost break down at the end of their set in appreciation of what just unfolded between them and the audience. War and Treaty. Passenger. Many, many unique guest collaborations.
This fest is so much more than the lineup, and I think each year this will become even more so the case as artists learn about the magic and want to be fans themselves (still can’t believe Sharon Ban Etten was there and didn’t even play any sets at the fest, only to pop up for Deer Tick after show).
I’ll let this post serve as a reminder to myself, to allow critical judgment of the lineup, but to avoid negative vibes until they are deserved. This fest, no matter the initial announced lineup, is going to be special. Something that a Forecastle, or Mountain Jam, etc., will never be able to create.

Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
70 bucks is a bit too steep for me, particularly since if you get chosen via lottery you automatically get billed.
glad i saw tick in brooklyn 2 weeks back for 8 bucks a ticket, hoping they offer a few more late night shows at varied price points (glorietta was nice and cheap last year and a blast)
One thought that did cross my mind was Taylor Swift + Haim.
I also thought some indie collab led by Jenny Lewis would have made sense (she has had jam sessions with Haim and St Vincent, among others), but alas, she’s out of town that weekend.
Also, fix your avatar. It fucks up quoted posts lol
Figured it was easier to quote this post than add to the wall of text, but I still stand by that statement from last year.
I still think this is going to be an awesome weekend. I’ve tried to temper even my more critical posts this cycle with that sentiment. I no longer doubt Jay. He/they managed to book one of my most anticipated new artists (HighWomen) to potentially play their first ever set, booked one of my favorite bands to play one of my favorite albums in its entirety (Dawes - North Hills), booked one of my most listened to artists over the last 5-7 years (Kacey Musgraves), and booked an artist touring on my most played album to release this year (Maggie Rogers). Sunday rounded out nicely, even though I was most skeptical of this day as recent as 2-3 weeks ago. Friday has one of the most stacked upper cards in Newport history. In terms of newer artists I’ve been loving, I’ll add Lucy Dacus (although I was moderately familiar with her work before she was announced... thanks to several on this board requesting her last year), Nilufer Yanya, Jupiter and Okwess, the O’My’s, and Black Belt Eagle Scout. (I could see adding Illiterate Light to this list if they drop their new album before the fest.)
That said, I still have several criticisms with the lineup that I am not entirely sure will be fixed with only one more announcement:
- A lack of music from headliners that I can listen to in anticipation of the fest - A weak middle and upper tier on Saturday - An over reliance on special guest / collaboration sets that can be hit or miss (as I mentioned why earlier). That are especially difficult to anticipate because there’s not much known about these sets. - Too many *single name* artists -> an obvious move away from booking bands - Missing some of the folk bands I personally was hoping to see this year who were touring on newer albums

I was also somewhat down on last year's lineup and share all of the same criticisms regarding this year's - specifically the last one.
There are a lot of bands/artists touring on great albums that haven't been added that I would have loved... Vampire Weekend, Sharon Van Etten, Kurt Vile, Big Thief, Daniel Norgren, Stella Donnelly, Lady Lamb, BOCC, Aldous Harding, MLV, Andrew Bird, The Felice Brothers, Shovels & Rope, Julia Jacklin (All of which have albums in my personal top 20 this year other than Kurt Vile who was in my top 20 last year).
That just means it will be a year of surprising new talent and there's nothing wrong with that. 2014 is my favorite lineup - although I thought it was amazing at the time too - and at the time some of the biggest names on that lineup where relatively unknown such as Lucius, Shakey Graves, and Hozier.
I'm still confident that it will be my favorite weekend of the year despite the lack of exciting announcements for me.

This quote made me think of some of the feedback on this board: “Jay, if you’re not upsetting someone, you’re doing it wrong.” Pete Seeger
This is really neat. I like how Jay described artist payments. Like, he’s always talked about having to pay big name artists less than they can make elsewhere... but I thought this was especially interesting in how there’s a balance.
Also, had we not just gotten the 18th artist announcement for Saturday, I would have been more certain Chance was our Saturday headliner after reading this. That said, it’s quite possible Chance is a guest during the Seeger SingALong and through this Jay will introduce hip hop to Newport.

Jesus, I don't know if I can do Deer Tick this year, if it's now $70 a night. $70 x 3 for myself and my girlfriend is $420, convert that to Canadian funds and that's nearly $565, which is nearly half my rent for a month. I never thought I'd have to back out of seeing my favourite band, but fuck man...
Newport: if you like music that you don’t know because they haven’t released it yet or you don’t know who is playing, boy do we have a lineup for you!
the fest sells out with announcing a single act so this is sort of the point right? that it doesnt matter? newport isnt designed to be the sort of fest where you buy a ticket for your top artist or to hear their favorite song.
I can’t argue that that’s not the type of festival that Newport is, but For me one of the most appealing aspects of a festival is musical exploration before a set. I, like a lot of people enjoy sets 10 times more when I know and am excited for the artist. I think this is a pretty normal thing and fair to be upset about. Also I’ve been obsessed with Newport’s lineups forever and have been blown away year after year, but I never remember it being this many. It seems like it’s really been ramped up.
everyone should read this full interview. it's not the long but has some crazy insights. also the two names he mentions at the end....
Yup! Maybe getting us ready for Friday announcement lol.
Who did he mention? I can't listen right now. As for why it became 'more to come' again. Well its clearly because i've been telling Dolly on twitter all about how Friday have one of best female country lineups ever and she should be there to show them how its done. Also I promised to buy her her favorite drink. Red wine. Hey. Was worth a try.

Ok got to read it. So it sounds to me like a name mentioned there was supposed to be there Saturday but ended up only being available Friday.

Could do at least one night instead of all three.
Then again, this is coming from someone who's never done an after show - though have been to eight NFF's
