Who did he mention? I can't listen right now. As for why it became 'more to come' again. Well its clearly because i've been telling Dolly on twitter all about how Friday have one of best female country lineups ever and she should be there to show them how its done. Also I promised to buy her her favorite drink. Red wine. Hey. Was worth a try.
Ok got to read it. So it sounds to me like a name mentioned there was supposed to be there Saturday but ended up only being available Friday.

Wait.. who are you talking about?
Just speculating. You could imagine a Saturday headliner having something come up and not being able to do Saturday but being free Friday. Chance was mentioned in the article but its probably unrelated. The friday about turn is weird but could also be explained by a relatively big artist seeing the lineup and wanting in on the action and newport not wanting to miss a golden opportunity. Interesting year.
So was talking with my 12 year old daughter about today's announcement and she said she would make sure to see that set (if she was going, which she's not.) I told her that the past collaborations have mostly been phenomenal with the exception of one clunker. Was super excited for 'Grandma's Hands Band' but ended up being disappointed by the lack of rehearsals that went into it which lead to folks reading lyrics on their iPhones and one artist not being around when it was his turn to perform. Anyways, this is where we get to the point where we learn from our children.
She asked "Was that collaboration all men?" "Yes" "I bet the women will rehearse more. Because men are like tomatoes rotting on the vine because for them nothing is on the line."

Shamed man. Proud Dad.
You’re thinking of the Chuck set. Grandmas Hands was awesome!

This makes me think about the Eaux Claire experiment gone wrong. I wasn’t there, and I know some people loved the surprise element and uniqueness of the lineup, but a considerable amount of reviews I had read stated something along the lines that for many of the sets it just felt like you were invited into a rehearsal. Even from the acts that were booked as headliners.
On the other hand, I loved the A Change is Gonna Come set last year. That Jon Batiste and Chris Thile jam was a highlight of the weekend. So when it works, it can really work. That said, I think that set had the benefit of having a house band (getting off of a summer tour together) who could anchor things and with musicians who are likely used to improvisation. And the highlights of that set, at least for me, were songs performed by the artists who wrote/recorded the songs they played (Mavis, Chris, Jon/Gary/Leon, etc)
Collaborations are worth the effort, but as a closer for Saturday it is a "majorly" risk unless..there is a house band or one of the performers brings musicians they have worked with. Jay knows this.
EDIT: I'm thinking First Aid Kit had been booked, and now things have to be moved and added. And...
A budding "supergroup" that has purposely stayed under the radar, OR
It's people who have already played together. Dolly Parton has stayed clear of anything that sniffs of politics such as NFF, but I could see her appear with goddaughter Miley Cyrus and NFF friends.
Susan Cowsill is back in town
I've also always paid attention to Levon Helm Studio collaborations and those at Lincoln Center Out of Doors, which every year has some shared talent...or they appear the following year. It's where I first saw Low-cut Connie, for example. One thought is their annual NPR Turning the Tables: The Motherlode -- www.lincolncenter.org/out-of-doors/show/npr-musics-turning-the-tables-live-the-motherlode
I'm seeing 'More Announcements Soon' on all three days. I thought Friday opened back up but Saturday closed. Is it possible todays annoucement was a pre-headliner and we still have to get the Saturday headliner? I could see Friday having opened back up because a Dolly or Willie decided to join the fun or a Saturday performer had to be moved to Friday. How do we still have three to go?

In previous years, I seem to remember that “More Announcements” remained even after the main stage artists were announced to account for Museum Stage announcements. Although I also seem to remember that “Announcements” differed from “artists” and Newport changed the wording after announcing 18 acts for a day. It is peculiar that it was taken away and then brought back, but that could just be a misunderstanding of some staff member in charge with maintaining the website. I’m not going to think much about it at this point until we get a 19th act announced for any day in particular.
That said, after reading that interview, I’m now convinced Chance will be at Newport- there’s too many coincidences and Jay specifically said he wish he could have made it happen before Pete passed away- but where would he fit on the lineup at this point? The only option is as an unannounced guest as part of the Seeger tribute set. And that would prevent any chance for him to play with Noname because she has to be in Michigan that Sunday.
Is it possible that some of these artists are maybe in the museum...?
I remember Jay specifically saying “every artist” for donations.
Does “every artist” include guests that join a set, and aren’t playing their own set. (If that happens)
I know they have plans on expanding the museum. If they expanded the museum in size this year, it could be capable of holding larger tier performers than usual.

It’s an interesting thought, and I know we debated the same last year, but I’m still thinking no.
While there are several announced acts that I think could fit in the Museum Stage (EB the Younger, Black Belt Eagle Scout, Susto, Illiterate Light), there aren’t any obvious Museum Stage bookings announced yet. All of those acts are just popular or lively enough to make sense on any of the other stages (especially the Harbour stage). There are a lot of booked acts that are just slightly too big for the Museum Stage.
Additionally, it can’t be coincidental that no day has had more than 18 acts announced for it yet. One of the days even dropping the “More Announcements Soon” verbiage (even though it’s back) after hitting the 18 act limit.
Although, wasn’t there mention of a new bigger building on the property being opened up this year for music?

Ed Sheeran just announced a new collaboration album, with a song with Chance the Rapper.
Newport confirmed? Hahaha
Not sure why this triggered my next thought, but it did:
Pharrell Williams has an album called “GIRL”. Pretty sure it’s his most recent album with his most popular song. Given Maggie on the lineup and potentially leading into the headlining set, what if it’s a play through of that album reimagined as a collaboration with folk artists and instrumentation.
Similarly Maren Morris’s latest album is also called “GIRL”. We know she’ll be playing Friday with the HighWomen. But didn’t her guitarist reach out on Instagram to the Milk Carton Kids who will be there on Sunday? There are some collabs already on that album (Brandi and Brothers Osborne).
Damn, I will probably only be able to do one and I don't know what one that will be.... These are great - and to play grouch real quick - make me even more bitter about the sus festival lineup.
Thank you Newport for scheduling ticket sale to be after we find out about Deer Tick lottery.
I’m interested in “Steal Your Folk” and/or Mavis. Not sure if I would rather either of those over Deer Tick though.
Also, makes me think Sunday Deer Tick is the way to go because artists won’t be split up between after shows (since it’s the only thing going on on Sunday night).
amazing list of late nights. i would guess based on my budget ill try to end up at Robert Ellis on saturday at parlor. which sounsd fantastic since i love the new record and sadly missed him when he came thru BK.

Damn. I love Jane Pickens but I need to see that late night Milk Carton Kids. The late night show they did a few years ago was stellar and full of awesome guests.
Okay, really gotta start looking into onsale times and the deer tick lottery and what my plans are going to be.
Do the Deer Tick after shows go up on Lyte, as well? Like could I easily get rid of mine on there if I end up getting tix to the other late nights?

I believe their tickets are handled through someone else; they haven't gone through lyte in the past.
love that they offered a nice mix of booked and unbooked artists. also love seeing the return of Aaron Lee Tasjan, who i've seen a couple times since discovering at fort a few years back. if only my hotel covered thursday night...

I seem to remember last year Deer Tick was still Will Call only, non-refundable and non-transferrable. Unless you were there with the person and could get them in on your behalf at Will Call.

But I could be misremembering.
You can always get into those DeerTick shows. Been inside for 19 of the 21. The other 2 nights we couldn’t go. The Parlor is the Blues cafe!
