Here’s a little secret for those who really want to see a DeerTick show. Just go to the Blues cafe and wait it out. You will get in. Now that Tick is doing this lottery system, a bunch of the tickets end up in people’s hands that either can’t or don’t go. The Blues cafe monitors people in, people out and will let you in (not for free). It’s more of a battle of attrition With so many other shows in town, it’s even easier. They usually hold some tickets back as well.
Also, there's always people (like me some years) who go to the show but have an extra ticket or two and will gladly sell it for face value to people waiting. It's definitely possible and Deer Tick don't go on until late anyway. Plus, waiting outside you can at least kinda hear the openers.
This is true. Some years we have had several extras and often give them to the people who look like the most fun. Other years we have needed tickets and others return the favor. The big security guy (who is there EVERY year) was a hard ass the first couple of years, now he hugs us.

Yeah I love that security dude. He's always cool and I agree he seems to have softened up a bit over the years. He's very stern but a good guy doing a good job.
Looking at that instagram with Jay and Mavis,I just started thinking why have I never thought about Joni Mitchell here. Although I kind of prefer her more jazzy stage, how amazing if Joni and NFF's great publicist, Mavis, and take your pick were the Collaboration. How sick would that be?
P.S. -- Glad I don't do after shows because all tix would be gone before I could decide which show to attend.
Joni played Newport 50 years ago this year. I'm surprised she was at the Mavis gig. Got impression she just liked being home painting these days. I feel that Bonnie, Mavis and Sheryl are more likely but who knows. It would be epic and sounds like she enjoyed herself with Mavis and Jay.

To me, that's a great reason to possibly expect her. It would be great press after the fact and you know Jay could have sold it to her as an anniversary set. Same thing how they had James Taylor come back and "finish" his set that was interrupted by the moon landing.

Also remembering that Brandi Carlisle is doing that Joni Mitchell 'Blue' album show later this year. Starting to see the closing on Saturday as a set similar to the recent Sunday closers but being anchored by : Mavis, Brandi, Sheryl Crow, with suprise appearances by Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell and all the other great women who are there that weekend making supporting appearances (Yola, Maggie, Rhiannon, and on and on.) This really is an amazing weekend of performances.

This makes perfect sense... This is also probably what they were trying to do with Chuck Berry since we know they intended on having him come to the festival in 2017.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
So we’re at the end of the announcements most likely?
Newport might be still trying to replace First Aid Kit whom may have been booked for that Sunday. And we’ll get an announcement eventually, but no need to expect it.
Although I’d think it would be easy enough to do so between Mavis, Robert Ellis, Hiss Golden Messenger, Kurt Vile, J Mascis, and whichever unannounced guests are in the area.

I doubt we're at the end of announcements, given that they still have the "More Announcements Soon" at the bottom of each day. I'd be fine with no announcement today, personally, given the announcement of the killer after-shows yesterday.
Everything else announced will be icing on the cake to what is already shaping up to be a phenomenal lineup, imo

True, maybe holding off for Memorial Day weekend? Could close out announcements next week on Wednesday/Friday. Or run a few weeks of just Wednesday. I dunno.

Regular artist announcements, maybe.
We’ll still get Museum Stage announcements likely in the next month.
And if a band did drop off, like First Aid Kit, we’ll still be getting an artist announcement for Sunday when they replace the act. But no need to expect it today or any time soon.
If y'all really think Newport got Joni Mitchell you are not nearly hyped enough. Would probably be their best and most impressive booking of the Jay era and would turn this lineup into an all-timer.
They can’t announce Big Red Machine until after Boston Calling.
This crossed my mind. That the final act could involve some sort of radius clause. And we could be waiting for Boston Calling or Gov Ball. But you’d think Hozier would have a similar radius clause if this was the case? (And Kacey and Noname for Gov Ball.)

If y'all really think Newport got NEIL you are not nearly hyped enough. Would probably be their best and most impressive booking of the Jay era and would turn this lineup into an all-timer.

Fixed
Not wrong, but I'd consider getting Joni Mitchell out of retirement more impressive than booking Neil Young

I can’t help but feel like the more we throw around names like Neil and Joni, we are just going to end up with The Lumineers. Everyone just settle down. We’re going to blow this

Yeah I suggest this too even though I dont go to them anymore. I am too old and tired for those shows after a long Newport day. The first year they did the after shows, it was sold out one night and I saw John from Deer Tick outside and asked him if he had any extra tickets. He said wait 10 minutes and put me my brother and some friends we met all on the guest list. I will never forget it. He even came up to us during the opener and said something like "Hey, I was hoping to see you guys actually get in." Very cool.
I'd Iive with Neil or Joni or The Lumineers, too. But I entered here today after receiving a Bandsintown email that War and Treaty are playing New York Thursday, Jul 25. Obviously they are not part of any big late announcement, but the thought they or even just Tanya will show is pretty exciting to me at the moment. I loved them so much last year, and still do. Also understand Kan Franklin intends to be at Newport, but I guess that's a given.
I don't know how this works, but some bands are simply known in the industry to have essentially a good will link with a particular concert or festival; I don't think Hozier would sign a radius clause re Newport. Though not terribly excited about his announcement; I heard a song I couldn't ID this morning on FUV that I just loved. It was Hozier and I am all in to see him again now.
And not worried about them finding replacement. Whether they are names that excite or not -- the Decembrists, Roger Waters, probably Monsters and Men and a whole bunch of other people would change travel plans and not say a peep about the money to help this festival out. That's the doing of Jay, the manner you fine welcoming people treat these artists, and the history of the fest.
I beef a bit in here, but it's all gravy for me going forward. Gonna be a great weekend.
Yea, I want one or two more artists not because I think the festival lineup needs one or two more artists, but because I want a few more to add to my Newport playlist which I officially started listening to nonstop as of a week ago.
I know, there are already a lot of artists on the lineup to explore, but I’ve already ruled quite a few out. Or at least haven’t been able to get excited for them in early stage listens. That said, I’m not worried about not having a busy schedule on any of the three days.
I think hoping for Neil or Bruce or Paul at this point is in vain. Joni only makes sense if there is indeed a mysterious women-led headline caliber collaboration set for Saturday. I wouldn’t be surprised if we were done with artist announcements. I also wouldn’t be surprised if we get one more for Sunday at some point. But I don’t think it’s worth hoping for more on Friday or Saturday, especially headline caliber artists, unless they happen to be with one of the other sets. But I could also be entirely wrong - it is a little strange that Friday and Sunday have almost twice as many big name acts as Saturday.

I know Joni was at the Mavis benefit but did she perform or was it a meet and greet thing? I have big time concert envy on those Mavis benefits. Wish i got to one.
