Feeling good about getting through on at least one of these
Agreed.
Currently I have:
2 x Milk Carton Kids for Friday
and
2 x Deer Tick for Saturday.
But with Lyte I put in for:
1 x Steal Your Folk for Friday
and
1 x Mavis staples for Saturday
My spot in the lyte line is 50 for steal and 28 for Mavis. If I can get selected for these I should be able to easily get rid of the ones I currently have. And if I don't get these through lyte then I have backup plans already.
I am really happy they started setting up the Lyte system. If only some of these after show venues had more capacity so more people could get tickets.

i'll trade you a steal your folk for deer tick sat.
Tempting offer. I'm definitely considering it but don't want to pull the trigger right now on this. But i'll for sure keep this in mind. Let me think a bit on this and get back to you. If you get an offer or find a deal where you can get what you need don't hold off on account of me. Do what you need to do.

Got two for Cook Bros and two for Deer Tick Sunday! Looking for two for the Saturday Deer Tick show! This will be my first time skipping a DT show since I started going to the Blues Cafe, five years ago.

Fellow Newport Folkers! First post after lurking around these boards for the last three years! We got 3 tickets for Friday Deer Tick, looking to trade for Sunday Deer Tick if anyone is interested. We also got 3 tickets for Saturday Deer Tick, looking to trade for Robert Ellis.
Thanks for heads up on Lyte, put my MCK tickets up. Hopefully can make someone’s after party wish a possibility. Super stoked for Steal Your Folk. Already drafting possibilities of guests: Phil Lesh and the Terrapin Family Band Benmont Tench Warren Haynes Justin Vernon Lukas Nelson Todd Snider The Watsons Brandi Carlile Jeff Tweedy Jim James Dawes Kevin Morby Josh Kaufman Phosphorescent Bruce Hornsby Sharon Van Etten Hiss Golden Messenger

Joan Osborne
Good call, I forgot about her as a possibility for a hot minute there.

In case anyone hasn't listened to it yet, here's an interview with Phil Cook by the Brokedown Podcast (a podcast "deadicated" to everything concerning the Grateful Dead) from last year. Fast forward to around 18:45 for the interview itself: brokedownpodcast.blogspot.com/2018/06/021-featuring-phil-cook.html
Right around the 54 minute mark Phil talks about the "Day of the Dead" album, his relationship with Bruce Hornsby, and the like. Great stuff!
Hey all, hope everyone’s having a good Newport preseason. I’m supper pumped, usually do 2 after parties, this year I’m doing 4. I’m going to be hurting in the best way after the weekend. Just had the thought that maybe we are only have the museum announcements left and the free slot on Sunday was done intentionally so we get a double set of If I Had A Song for Pete’s birthday. My other thought is that Big Red Machine would bring Aaron Dessner in town for Steal Your Folk.

Billy Strings often covers Grateful Dead. But he may be performing elsewhere that night (didn’t look at his schedule).
Edit: here’s a video of him and Molly covering a Dead tune.

SVE (Interstellar) and Dawes (XPN) probably won't be available.
Interesting that Mavis is being listed as one of the performers at the festival itself, when she’s only scheduled for an after-show currently. Maybe she’s a part of that Collaboration on Saturday?

Also mentions 60 artists. I suppose that could be including museum though.
Was slacking on checking out unfamiliar announcements lately and noticed Newport Folk posting about Devon Gilfillian this week. Wow. Glad I checked him out. Definitely want to see him if possible.

So happy to get to a chance to see Anais Mitchell in Bonny Light Horseman at Newport this Summer. Her co-created show has the most Tony Award Nominations this year after taking to the venue Bruce Springsteen just departed. Her stock is rising fast.
The cast of Hadestown stopped by CBS This Morning to perform two songs from the Broadway show ahead of the Tony Awards on June 9th, where the musical is nominated for 14 awards.
Mitchell first recorded Hadestown with Ani DiFranco and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon in 2010. “Broadway was not in my sights at the time…I didn’t know how badly I wanted it until it happened,” she said.
Surely this increases the chances of a Bon Iver Newport set, right? Makes sense it wouldn't be announced with the Boston date in October. Newport alum and Newport adjacent folks all over the album and tour. I'd put good money on him being there now.
Also, not that it’s not an important topic and should be confined to only a few sets, but it’s still difficult for me to believe that we will have this Future is Female Museum set on Friday, a HighWomen headlining set on Friday, potentially an entire main stage on Friday led by women (awesome!)...
Yet this mysterious collaboration on Saturday also structured around the concept of women empowerment.

I mean this is so obviously a direct response to Brandi Carlile's call-out during her set last year, right? I think it's awesome we have so many women artists this year, but the fact that it's so heavy and came the year after those comments, it feels more tail-between-legs apologia than an organic booking decision.

I think that was Margo with the call out. I agree with the premise of your post though... but it doesn't look purely reactionary from the outside. If you're ever going to have the festival lead by the female artists this has turned out to be a perfect year to do it.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

To be fair, I’ve always been impressed with Newport’s ability to book a demographically diverse lineup in a genre that could easily lack diversity.
It just seems like Friday is the obvious response to the call out.
Which leads me to believe we may be off on the collaboration, given that it’s booked for Saturday. Maybe it is something more related to Bon Iver and as the summer progresses we’ll find out that the album somehow has something to do with Venus and that’s why we were given those symbols.

I think it's great that they're doing it, no matter what prompted it. Has anyone had the idea that the collaboration on Sat. is The National featuring all of the women on their new album?

Am going to go ahead and give my wife full credit for this as we provided the following feedback both on the portal and our member survey last year:
My wife and I talked a lot about gender representation at the festival this year. It appears that Jay (and crew... i think we probably give Jay too much credit for all the work that goes into this and should spread it out to the others,) is very intentional about trying to balance the gender representation in the lineup. However, if you look at the overall stage presence of the back-up bands throughout the days, it turns out to be about 75-80% male if not more. Now, i am sure this is not something unique to Newport or even something the festival could really change. If Valerie June wants to come with 10 men backing her up, that is her choice. But the foundation could do more to encourage female musicians to pursue it as a career... not just vocalists. I am sure someone could provide an example, but would be hard pressed to think of a female drummer who has played Newport.
Maybe turn over an afternoon set at the Children's Stage to the Girls Rock program to highlight some of their best. Wouldn't it be incredible to be a 13 year old girl who rocks her guitar at Newport! Could imagine her ending up on stage with someone for their set.
Also, JP Harris and Motel Van Zandt also did an awesome job curating the Museum Stage. My wife saw Matt the Electrician and Chris Smithers and loved it. Was the best its been since I have attended. That being said, maybe they should put at least one day in the hands of a woman to curate.
