I mean this is so obviously a direct response to Brandi Carlile's call-out during her set last year, right? I think it's awesome we have so many women artists this year, but the fact that it's so heavy and came the year after those comments, it feels more tail-between-legs apologia than an organic booking decision.
To be fair, I’ve always been impressed with Newport’s ability to book a demographically diverse lineup in a genre that could easily lack diversity.
It just seems like Friday is the obvious response to the call out.
Which leads me to believe we may be off on the collaboration, given that it’s booked for Saturday. Maybe it is something more related to Bon Iver and as the summer progresses we’ll find out that the album somehow has something to do with Venus and that’s why we were given those symbols.
Again, if someone(s) at Newport thought that would be the best way to tease a Bon Iver appearance, they should lose their jobs. I can't think of a music festival that's ever done something that bone-headed and stupid, so let's hope Newport isn't about to.
And if Vernon has the nerve to use a Venus symbol for his album for god knows what reason he should also feel deeply deeply stupid and ashamed
That symbol is pretty much universally and exclusively tied to femininity and womanhood. It's gonna be women on that stage

As a female...I wouldn't be offended by/have a problem with this at all. If it's a set of all females, I'm sure it will be badass. If it's Vernon (or some other male artist who genuinely respects and frequently collaborates with females), I'm sure it will be badass. The only thing I would have a problem with is if it was somehow mocking females/female artistry, which I'm absolutely certain is not the case.

It's not that it's offensive, more that it'd be incredibly misleading, and for no one on the Newport team to realize that would be confusing to say the least.
Vernon has not used the Venus symbol to date as far as I know, and doesn't appear to be using it in regards to these new singles, so I'm still uncertain where the speculation is stemming from other than general speculation for him/Bon Iver.
If it's not women leading that set then it makes 0 sense for that to be how it's billed. The fact that people on this board are predicting Bon Iver or The National, two bands that have collaborated with women but feature exclusively male members, instead of an actual collaboration of four women is surprising to me.

But isn't the whole point of how they announced it to keep it a mystery? And part of that may potentially include misleading people? Can't make it too easy on us! Haha.

I'd say no festival should deliberately mislead people as to who is playing.
I'll just leave this alone by saying that I think there is absolutely not a single chance that set is lead by any man or men. I think there will 100% be 4 relatively well known women on the stage. Only mystery is who they are, the announcement pretty much spelled the rest out for us. I'll assume anyone talking about Bon Iver or The National in regards to that set are just trying to fit their wishes into what we've been presented with

Not trying to have some big argument (I promise I've been typing these responses with a smile on my face). I DO think there's a big difference between "I really don't think males will play a major role in that set" vs. "Someone should lose their job if males do play a major role in that set." That's all - and again, whatever it is/whoever is involved, I'm sure it'll be a special set during a special weekend, and I can't wait to be there with all of y'all!
I'll start by saying i think it will be Sheryl, Mavis plus amazing guests.
But I have another theory. I'm probably wrong and better researchers can dig further and find out.
I think it might be Bjork!
She is playing a show in Brooklyn.
It includes the song 'Venus As A Boy'
It's has an all female chorus of female flutists and harpists called Viibra who she has described as females supporting each other.
It's a show and she has said that she has given up on the traditional touring circuit although does have dates in Mexico mid August. Who knows. The images look stunning. Makes me wish i lived in Brooklyn.

Its lyrics, meanwhile, “are about proposing to come up with a more compassionate way to interact with nature. Hopefully to start from a female point of view will help.” Bjork

Also not trying to argue but I am genuinely bewildered by even the consideration that that set could possibly be how they hint towards an all-male band.
It'd be the equivalent of going to what you thought was a mosque and having a Catholic priest come out to give a sermon

I also believe it will be a female-led/dominated set; but I won't be completely shocked or suggest someone get fired if it's not
Edited to say: I am LOVING the sound of Angie McMahon from today's Museum set announcement. Best "discovery" of the lineup for me so far!

I can tell you I will be extremely disappointed if the unannounced Saturday headliner is just previously announced artists jamming together. Perhaps it is boygenius +1?

That would be incredible, but also I don't think it would be a headliner.

Wasn’t there a theory that one of missing announcements was bc they booked First Aid Kit (who cancelled all dates)? This feels like a late add fill in a bit...

There’s always the chance that they had to fill Ryan Adams spot, as well.

What's wrong with the Infamous Stringdusters? I've been casually following them lately and I bet it'll be a great set.
For those who've requested tickets on Lyte, how far along have you gotten in line? I'm down to #100 in line for a Sunday ticket, but I'm starting to get a bit nervous that it might not get fulfilled at this point, given that we're getting ever closer to the festival. I'm new to the Lyte experience though, so I could be worrying about nothing
I was hoping to see Yonder Mountain announced once some of the other jam-type bands were showing up (but they ended up booked for another festival). This seems like a fair consolation prize. Their songs are a little corny at times, but I’m sure they’ll have some great bluegrass instrumentals. The late announcement definitely feels weird though and I think them filling in makes a lot of sense.
Also, I’m still laughing at the suggestions that the Venus symbol band might actually be a male-led group. That is purely wishful thinking. And if it is the national or bon iver, then I agree they deserve to be fired. Not because of malicious intent... it’s just very very bad marketing. And it would definitely get some bad press. Friday’s museum is “the future is female” (... except for tomorrow when the female is actually code for male!)

I'm #369 down from #511 for a three day pass. Still hoping, but looking into other options. I travel from abroad, and I think I'm going to ahead and get plane tickets and hope something works out.
I think the negative reaction to the Dusters is that Sunday just feels like any other music festival. There are no unique or inherently Newport booked bands on that day. Instead, Sunday could easily be a day at Mountain Jam. Or any other moderately niche music fest in the country: Portugal, Trey, Dusters, Lake Street Dive, Hozier.
You could have taken any of those acts and booked something more unique or interesting. Like booking Lonesome Trio or Mipso as opposed to the Dusters. The Shins or New Pornographers over Portugal the Man. Belle and Sebastian or the Isley Brothers over Lake Street Dive. Ben Howard over Hozier.
Even if the Dusters are a fill in booking, I think many of us would have preferred Mavis as a fill in. Or Sharon Van Etten. Or another artist that is rumored to be at Newport during the weekend but doesn’t have a set yet.

That's a fair point. It's just a really strong day for my personal tastes, but I can certainly see some being underwhelmed. I'm just trying to be a bit more positive lately instead of being a wet blanket all the time.
