Just returned from Wilco's Solid Sound Festival at MassMOCA in North Adams, MA. My favorite sets included Courtney Barnett, The Feelies, The Minus 5, Lakou Mizik, The Autumn Defense with a string quartet, Tweedy and Friends and Wilco of course. I am sure there were many other great sets that I couldn't catch. If you like rock and roll, go to MassMOCA and check out the art exhibits from Annie Lennox, Chrissie Hynde, the Laurie Anderson virtual reality experience, and the rock and roll photo collection "The Bright and Hollow Sky" (https://massmoca.org/event/the-bright-and-hollow-sky/). You will not be disappointed. Now, ready for NFF!
Of course Bon Iver has to throw around symbols that look eerily similar to the female symbol.
Haha I just came here to post the same thing. Of course I don't really know how to post images on here and it probably would have taken me 20 minutes to figure out so I'm glad you beat me to it.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

I couldn't afford the ticket or trip given the rest of my concert budget this year...but that "Handshake Drugs" performance really made me rue that fact.
Ahhhh I’ve been looking for a lineup repository for years! Link?
It's under the lineup section here. But I'm unsure of the accuracy. I own a print of the 1960 NFF lineup and it doesn't match the 1960 lineup shown here. I need to do some research.
Edit: Initial search online for the 1960 lineup confirms the lineup listed on the wiki page. Apparently the 1960 lineup poster i own is from an alternate universe. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newport_Folk_Festival
It’d be great to hear about how the mysterious collaboration came about.
How Newport landed the first HighWomen show.
Whether or not Newport tried for Boygenius and Better Oblivion Community Center, and if so, what was the hold up (requesting too much money? Someone like Phoebe couldn’t tour at that time for personal reasons?). I’d assume most of those artists would have an interest in making it work, given they’ve all been well received at the fest (expecting Lucy will this year).
And why the relationship with the Cambridge Folk Festival didn’t last beyond its first year (I’d have loved to have Tunng on this year’s Newport lineup).
Was Noname Jay’s attempt at getting some hip hop onto the lineup in honor of Pete? Is it the beginning of something or a one off booking? (And was Noname’s and O’My’s relationship with Chance just a coincidence or has Jay built his own relationship with Chance?)

Jay made this comment on a post in the Facebook group: BOCC and Boy Genius were asked multiple times and I do mean multiple. We tried. As I ALWAYS say if you want an artist better to hit them directly they DO listen. start a campaign to make it happen. I'll sign it myself

I can't find the article right now but the Highwomen set at Newport came about because Brandi specifically identified Newport as the place she wanted them to play live for the first time.
Lucy Dacus just cancelled European shows due to something that sounded health related. US shows are still on at this time.
Also Lyte line for Steal Your Folk moved one spot, so you're telling me there's a chance! Haha
Disclaimer: Any artist’s health is always more important than my disappointment that may result from a cancelled show... truly. Any sadness and disappointment is not directed at the artist, but better represents how much I dig the artist.
But it looks like Newport would be her first show back if that’s the case. And it seems like she could easily cancel her three US shows in July to get another month of rest before her tour resumes in September.
I’ll be super sad if 2 of my top acts end up having to cancel. That’ll knock Saturday down quite a bit for me. And even more bummed I let work conflict with her local tour stop a few months back. She’s been my most listened to artist since her announcement for the fest.

seeing war and treaty tonight. they were one of my biggest surprises last year at the quad. i'm so glad we got a seat for that performance. everyone around us, including us, was in tears. so happy to see them again!
Speaking of breakout acts, who is this year’s Hozier or Leon Bridges (i.e., which artist has the most potential for meteoric rise to a amphitheater or arena shows)?
My guesses:
1) Devon Gilfillian 2) Jade Bird 3) Yola
Honorable Mention: Illiterate Light, in the chance they break through into mainstream rock radio upon release of their debut album like a Portugal. The Man or Cage the Elephant.

do the highwomen not count? lol
Good call; I’m just counting them as already popular. But, I guess they still could break through in a different sense if country music radio fully embraces them.

I could def see Illiterate Light getting some radio love. I'd also include Liz Cooper and Angie Mcmahon or Madison Cunningham from the Future is Female set
It seems like he showed up on Starbuck’s playlist like a week after he was announced. I’m not crediting NFF for that, but rather it’s indicative of them getting an act at the perfect time. I think he’s really going to become a big name soon.

Not a bad list, but I'd probably take Devon Gilfillian off of it...which isn't meant as a slight to him. I saw him at Shaky Knees, and he was really good...but I'm not sure his sound has that distinctive hook that would put him over the top.
Then again, all it takes is one Spotify hit, so what the hell do I know?

i hear ya. yola is on my list for break out artist and honestly i've been loving EB the Younger. that video for used to be is hilarious and i love the groove

I haven’t seen him so I can’t say whether he has that wow factor or not. But his newest single sounds like a mix between the Black Keys, Gary Clark Jr, and Leon Bridges. The production of that song makes me feel like he could one day command a bigger stage.

I do agree that JS Ondara will likely be around in the scene for a while, and an in demand act for festivals in the future. I just see him plateauing somewhere, at best, around the level of Lone Bellow. But I could be wrong because I’d have never have expected Father John Misty to command the audience that he now does.

This. Keeps catching my ear as 'this has possibility'.
On another note, are all of our peeps set for 3 day tixs? Asking for a friend.
I can’t imagine a scenario in which The HighWomen do not headline, especially if some of the rumored special guests join them. Not to mention the other acts on the lineup.
I still feel like it's a toss up between Kacey and Sheryl. I don't see the Highwomen closing the main stage this year. I guess we'll find out who's wrong in a week or so.
