Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
I’ll also add, it also depends upon your spot. If you get a coveted seat under a tent on the Harbor or Quad, that itself should account for something and weigh the current act you’re seeing a little more than just jumping around and potentially being in the far back (or in the sun/rain) for someone else.
Long time lurker here! Headed to my 4th NFF this year and still enjoying all of the tips. I’m wondering where most people stand on this - Do you prefer to catch full sets or try to hop around to see more music? I think one of the great things about the fest is how easy it is to get from one side of the grounds to the other but is it worth it to catch a few minutes of another artist rather than staying put? (I’m a hopper but my bf is a full-setter)
I strive to do full sets for acts that are unique to the fest or are high on my must-see list. If I do hop, I try to catch about 30 minutes unless I'm not feeling it. And some of it is how I'm feeling in the moment, for example, I'll decide on the spot if I should see all of I'm With Her or hop to Kacey Musgraves (likewise for CMA and Our Native Daughters).
I generally agree with k2b's feelings on the matter
If it's something I really want to see I'll see all of it. If two things I really want to see overlap, I'll normally decide which I'd rather see all of and make that move, rather than seeing 30 minutes of each or whatever.
I'll normally do partial sets in between sets at a different stage. For instance I'll try to go check out part of Mountain Man in between Lucy Dacus and Dawes, unless I end up with a seat at the Quad.
Also I almost always prefer to miss the beginning of a set rather than the end
We were right about Bose being the way to listen in to the Museum stage stream.
Cool! I feel like Sennheiser had headphones for the Museum Stage a few years ago and it worked nice. I miss when they used to sponsor the Paste Ruins and we could hear neat little sets there. That was a fun place to hit between main sets and could cool off there.
I always go into the festival saying I'm going to do more full sets, and then I end up moving between stages anyway. But that has calmed down a bit now that we bring our little folk, its a lot harder to move between stages when that requires picking up and moving a couple kids.
A few pages ago there was talk of Newport etiquette and I want to second what some people said about the Family Tent. My kid (now he's 5) LOVES the little performances there where he can dance with other kids. But, he would get real intimated when the tent was completely full of non-families. Not saying that you shouldn't try to catch a performance there if you don't have kids (You should! Some of my favorite times at the festival were in there) just saying try to give space for the families so the kids still have room to have fun.

I’m actually going to be the dissenting voice on the stage hopping. I usually find a chunk of time each day when there isn’t anyone I 100% need to see, and I love wandering the grounds and letting different sets sort of wash over me. That’s a good chance to get into the museum if it’s not mobbed, listen to a few tunes at the harbor, grab a beer in the quad...it’s part of the day I really enjoy. Plus it’s tough to find something new if I’m not giving a few things I didn’t expect to like a shot. In 2014 during that period I wound up listening to almost all of Benjamin Booker after wandering in!
Based on Newport's twitter post hyping Steve Gunn's music, I'm guessing that if the First Ladies of Bluegrass are not the TBA early Saturday set, then Steve Gunn is. Playing the early slot would give him enough time to get to VT for his show that night.
Not sure if this was announced, but it looks like Steve Gunn is confirmed to play the MCK's after show, www.steve-gunn.com/shows/. Would love if he stayed around and did the TBA set too.

First post just to say I am with you on this. To me, Newport is all about serendipitous discovery. This is the place I discovered Dawes, Deer Tick, Gary Clark Jr., Lucius, and Andrew Bird. I think I discovered Andrew Bird and Dawes even though they were both playing at the same time.
But I definitely get the other side. The last time I camped out, to insure good position, was about an hour before Jack White at the Fort. It was worth it.
The last couple years I've set up in back of the grass and bounced back and forth to the family tent most of the day. The way back, well behind the walk, is actually a great spot -- boats behind you, crowd in front -- perfect place to take in the whole Newport scene.
FOMO can be an issue at Newport. From getting there on time, to band conflicts, to long lines, to managing kids, there are always ways to miss out. For me, the best way to enjoy it is to surrender to the happenstance of the day. Go where you're feeling it the moment. Enjoy the day.

You know what sometimes leads to last minute changes in plans (for full sets .vs. partial sets) - seating and viewing location.
If I am in a good spot/seat at the Quad and I know I want to see an act after the one I'm watching I'll ditch my plans to go to another set (depending on who is playing).
If I can't get a good view at the Harbor stage and the audio doesn't sound great from the open spot I've found then I'll move on to the next thing.
I always want to do full sets but conflicts are rough and so I bounce around at times. It definitely depends on where I am and how good I can see/hear what's happening.

Gotta second this.
It’s easy to show up late to a Fort Stage set and find a spot in the pit to watch a song or two. Come a few songs late to a popular act on the Harbor Stage or the Quad Stage and you might not even be able to get a sight line of the act. The downside of the tents and seats at Newport.

I was so thankful when they added that screen to the side of the Quad stage. It makes things so much better for shows I'd like to see/hear but am not super invested in. So I can chill on the grass or a blanket while seeing the screen and hearing the music. Harbor stage can be rough if it's a big act and you show up late.
Apparently the Fleetwood Mac cover in this movie trailer is the HighWomen? Can anyone confirm or deny?
If so... this cover rips so hard... and I’ll stand by my unpopular opinion that it’s a total shame that it’s confined to the Quad.
you can very clearly hear brandi's voice in there. now rethinking skipping this set.
It is...good find
And of course, the whole thing gets a boost from being set to the tune of The Highwomen's cover of "The Chain" (a Fleetwood Mac song famously featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 a couple years back).
I got so excited upon discovering this that I linked to the specific trailer I found on YouTube. But if you go to Warner Bros official channel and watch the trailer they credit the Highwomen at the end of it (also, apparently Bryce Dessner does the music for the film).

I got worried when i saw some live videos of the Highwomen but those were just a few special event appearances. Newport is still their 1st official gig. Phew. Brandi insisted they debut at Newport apparently. So cool.
My first year was 2014, and we often raced from one act to another until fatigue, sun, rain, and frustration made me wonder if I am getting too old for this. Then I realized my wife was having a great time simply taking breaks at the side of the Fort bathing in the cool harbor breeze, or perhaps sketching the surroundings. Last year, at one point, I just plopped down near the passage inside the Quad and could still hear the music, but also got some nice shade, met some nice people, and at one point took a nice little nap.
I guess my point is that there is no rule against sampling as many acts as I once did, but now I plan on just pacing myself and soaking in the three (2.5) days. Sunday night I'm no longer thinking, gee, I missed The Milk Carton Kids, but wow what a weekend. Rather than chase the music, I'll hold my hand out and let it come to me, because wherever I am, the coolest things happen quite unexpectedly.
Of course, I am now in a dither what to do about Warren Haynes (the obvious choice) and, for me, the newly discovered magic of Charlie Crockett? Thankfully, its just a leisurely stroll, with some tasty free nuts on the way, between the Harbor and Fort.
Dangerously hot in North East this weekend. Thank God it wasn't on this weekend. I hope that forecast holds up. If it does we are in for one beautiful weekend.
That Sheryl Crow and JI cover of Dylan was fantastic!
The Highwomen track, did not meet the hype for me. It was alright, but didn’t wow me excessively.
I like the HighWomen single. In terms of supergroups, so far it’s better than Monsters of Folk and Boygenius IMO, but not approaching Better Oblivion or Middle Brother territory (I know... only one track out so far). The harmonies are great and it channels the Trio vibes they were going for, but doesn’t necessarily stand out as a single.
That Fleetwood Mac cover though checks all of the boxes for me
I’m a little down on that first track too. Actually a little worried that that’s what they choose to release first. Love the chain cover but really was more interested in the stuff they write together. We shall see. Just wondering what any of you think is going to happen on All Newport’s Eve? It’s my first year coining a day early for it. Just started to really get into Aaron Lee Tasjan a few months ago and love it but really have no idea about his relationship with other artists. Who might guest? Does a big artist usually show up for Eve?

I also wasn’t wowed by the first Highwomen single. I LOVE Brandi though, so that would be a very tough set for me to skip. Helps that I’ll see her perform the next weekend at Hinterland. Defo considering checking out Angie McMahon in the museum and missing most of the Highwomen at this point. Do we think we will get any more Highwomen songs before NFF? Would be a huge help for sure!
Not that they perform in the song, but I think it at least helps us see who might be in the inner circle and could pop up at Newport. With that, I expect Erin Rae will come out with them.
That makes Sheryl Crow, Yola, Erin Rae, and Courtney Marie Andrews as Newport artists with a connection to HighWomen.
