so i haven't been to Buku since the first two years. by the time the third year rolled around i was in my current profession and being that March is in the heart of busy season i typically haven't been able to make it. but if the daily schedule aligns properly i might try to go Saturday this year. so question for esteban or other buku regulars: looks like the single day lineup + single day tickets came out Jan 29 last year, is this pretty standard? Do they always sell single day tickets?
if i could see black madonna + dog blood i think it'd be worth driving over for a day. would also love claude von stroke and death grips to be on Saturday.

They always have had single day tickets in the past, so I would think they would do it again. They have also done all levels of admission on the single-day tickets. If you end up being able to make it, I'd recommend GA+. You don't drink so you don't need the VIP21 options. GA+ pretty much gets you into all the front of stage areas. Float Den can get wild and difficult to navigate, but you can walk right on up front to the right of the stage on any shows there. They do the same at the main stage, so you can get a more intimate and close-up experience. It's not going to be a cheap ticket, but there should be enough packed into that afternoon to make it worthwhile.
Also, yeah on Black Madonna. That's a pretty random DJ for Buku. Despite her acumen and experience level, I would think she'd be an afternoon ballroom set unless they just put her up on the riverside stage to spin for an hour or so. She would work well in either of those formats. When I saw her name, I actually thought she'd be ideal for VIP, because the older people are more likely going to be the ones who appreciate it.
Everyone I talked to is pretty excited for the lineup. Hit a couple of info-friends up and they graded it off pretty high - like A and B+ . I think the lineup is a solid B but has the potential to be better than that because of the amount of acts worth seeing this year. Usually there's a shit ton of acts I already don't care about and can just x them off the list of sets I'd want to see. This year is different because there is shit all the way to the bottom that I'd at least pass by - shit like Doja Cat. Not counting the New Orleans section, there are 43 acts. I'd at least pass by probably 35 of those and as I was telling someone last night, even shit I don't really care about like Claude who I've seen several times, I know I'd still have fun at it. So I'm going to end up missing or having to split several sets that I'd probably want to see even if just for fun. In a week or so, I'll try to throw together some shit on some of the undercard as there are some interesting acts like Oliver Tree , Mersiv, Rico Nasty and shit.

Yes they always sell single day. I don't know when they drop and they have sold out.
Maybe Skrillex wants only his deepest fans to show up to that?
The website lineup says it's Matt & Travis. I looked at the Wiki page, and it says that Matt Good is the lead guitarist and founding member and Travis Richter is current rhythm guitarist. I'm guessing they'll be up there working the board based on that. Whether it will be good or not, who knows? I know of the band and have heard a song or two, but I never really bothered to check it out beyond that.
Buku did a good job picking the “deeper” acts this year; they’re all fairly accessible.
agreed. for the past few years i've been listening to these type of "underground" acts and feeling like they could easily breakout into more multi-genre type festivals if given the chance. i'd love for EDM kids to be exposed to what I consider actual selecting/DJing, instead of whatever most EDM artists do, which feels more like a friend playing you songs from his spotify and talking to you about them between tracks. i mean, thats fine if people like it, but the music-only continuity and improvisational nature of DJing is what really got me into "underground" dance music.
and i don't like the term "underground" dance music which is why i always put it in quotes. hard to consider anything underground when they regularly play to 3,000 people at Printworks.
fuck, i'm excited for this. my lady or I have never been to new orleans so we're ready to get fat off aligator steaks and dog blood
Where are y’all coming down from? Also if you have any questions about the city don’t hesitate to ask and we will try to help you. Obviously if you can find a cheap enough place to stay in the Warehouse District, central business district//south market district/downtown or the French Quarter you’re likely within a mile or mile and half from Mardi Grad World. If you don’t have a vehicle, transportation via bike share, Uber/lyft bus or streetcar is easy enough. Because it’s a relatively small festival, you’re not going to have 2/3 hour waits for ride share. Also, keep in mind that Buku is a party festival so expect lots of smoking (outside) and drinking. It’s 17+ so other than the usual event of people falling out from molly/lack of hydration, everyone should be pretty nice and friendly. I’ve been since 2013 and never not had an awesome time.

We're coming from nyc! We land early Weds morning and leave late Mon. Will probably search around for airbnbs as it gets closer, any areas I should avoid? (aka sketchy areas where we won't get robbed )
We won't have a vehicle, so we'll definitely be on foot. Bike share sounds amazing + uber / lyft. How far is the festival from the city? We will also definitely take any food recommendations! Right now we're going based on "best of" lists and cross referencing with yelp to try to avoid tourist traps (Willie Mae's Scotch House for fried chicken? Cochon Butcher for Pig mac?)
Trying to hit a list of all the must haves
Also, I've been a life long fan of good Jazz music. My boss actually comes down once or twice a year as he's obsessed with Jazz so any recommendations to that with be great! :-D
We're in our late 20's so we don't play with the molly anymore (unfortunately), but have experienced enough of it and have seen plenty of people drop from dehydration + stims. I've found most festivals outside of NYC to be relatively friendly. People in the city tend to be hyper aggressive. Odds skrillex / dog blood does an after party?
edit: ooooh, so I googled it and the weathers is supposed to be in the 70s then, is that true?
I’ll get you on all that. For now, festival is right along the Mississippi River to the west/upriver from the FQ (1.5 m), CBD (1 mile), and is just past the convention center. It’s maybe a 8-10 minute walk to Howlin Wolf and Republic and say like 20 or so to the French Quarter. I think it's 1.2 miles to Harrah's exactly along Convention Center Blvd., and then Harrah's is maybe a few minutes to the FQ.
And yeah. There should be some badass night shows this year with the producer talent in town. I’m mostly hoping to throw up that X at a late night, but Skrillex has been known to pop up at Dragons Den unannounced.

Okay here goes. I edited in the numbers to address the quote.
1) Stay away from staying in Central City (that's not the central business district, just an area to the west called Central City) and the Treme. Also be skeptical of "near" uptown or anything like that. If you find something you like, just post the address or PM me, and I'll let you know if it's somewhere I'd stay. Most of the city is fine. And you can go to Treme for stuff like Willie Mae's and it's perfectly fine. You just might not want to stay there because it can get chaotic.
2) Yeah, Willie Mae's is badass. You kind of have to get there a few minutes before they open and get in line. They cook to order, so it's going to be 25 minutes from when you order. It's worth eating though. The chicken comes with a plate of red or white beans or butter beans. I find their beans not great and needing seasoning. But the chicken is great. Cochon and Cochon Butcher are both good. This is what I'd recommend - once you have a place, we'll let you know what is good within walking or cheap rideshare distance of where you're at. And also, if you run across anything you want an opinion on, just post that. Festival runs Friday and Saturday from like 3p-1am. So you'll have plenty of time to grab a bunch of meals.
3) There's a ton of those in all categories. When it gets closer, post what you like to eat, how much you are willing to spend and how dressy you want to get.
4) Satchmo Concert Line is the best source for music. Obviously that's way out in the future, so there's no telling what all will be going on Wed/Thu/Fri/Sat night or late night. You will also get some overnight shows on the Buku nights that go to sunrise. Here's the link: www.satchmo.com/nolavl/concerts.html Specifically for live local shit, WWOZ concert line is good too. Again, I'm sure nothing's up yet for that far in advance. But here's the link to that: www.wwoz.org/calendar/livewire-music Again, anything you see that you want an opinion on, feel free to ask.
5) It's super friendly. It skews younger, but most of the mid 20's/upper 20's kids started going back in 2012 or 2013 and came of age with Buku. All of my kids friends still go every year because it's a good time. You might see some blowhards crashing through a crowd or whatever, but that's probably going to be the exception.
6) Yeah. March is typically in the 70's. It can get colder or hotter (say range of 40's to 80's). But the end of March sort of starts seeing upper 70's, low 80's. It does rain sometimes with fronts and low pressures crossing by. There's enough places to duck into indoors to get away from anything torrential if we saw that. Nights are probably upper 50's/low 60's, so windbreakers/hoodies for us, probably shorts and wife beaters for you guys.
Like I said, keep researching and feel free to bounce anything off of this thread. I'll get you some dining ideas once you know where you're going to stay.
11/19: Caribou 11/22: Ranger Trucco 11/29: Armand Van Helden* 1/16: L'Impératrice 1/30: Jamie xx 2/1: DJ Seinfeld 2/7: Mild Minds* 3/1: Father John Misty* 3/19: Confidence Man 3/23: DARKSIDE 5/8: Rüfüs Du Sol
maybe so. I was wondering that too. I don’t really care that much because I wouldn’t be at that set at that time slot (9:30-11) because the Float Den or Ballroom would likely have shows I’d want to see way more. Buku is Goldenvoice, so if she’s out, hopefully they’ll do the right thing and announce it sooner than later
She is one of the reasons I want to go. If she backs out, I won't feel so bad for not getting tickets, unless she is replaced by a must see for me. thejeremy was going to buy them, but I told him to wait.
All I could find was she has a castle show in Dublin and a few festival stops in Denmark, Sweden and Spain besides Buku.
I think she was speculated for Coachella but could be wrong. I only lurk in that forum and have only posted since their forums were supposedly going to shut down (they haven't yet) and the new posters came over.
Right. I just meant that had been announced. I saw she was rumored for Coachella. The Euro dates are June and July. I don’t know if she’d just do a one off at a small festival in New Orleans or if she’s planning to cancel them all for whatever reason.

Omg. I just bought a ticket to Buku (yay! My first one - very excited about this lineup) and am just now hearing about this Lana news! Oh no! She's been on my bucket list for a while, and one of the main reasons this fest appealed to me.
Also, esteban thanks for the wealth of info. I haven't been to NOLA in ages so your recommendations are helpful.

Coachella lineup is out and she is not on it. Someone suggested that she could be cancelling her European fest appearances so she can do a proper tour of the new album surrounding the Dublin date. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Word. Whatever happens with Lana hopefully is for her best interests. Maybe we can get some news in the next few weeks if they have to get a replacement Power Plant headliner for Friday. They’ve also announced additions in January some of the years, so if they are going to jack it up any more, we ought to know fairly soon. I’m pretty satisfied overall with the lineup as is, but I’ll take some more chaos.
Looks like Lana Del Rey's team has stated that she will be performing at Buku. I think the potential loss was scaring off some people. But artists gonna be artists sometimes. Maybe it was the European June/July shows she was planning on backing out of, Idk. But someone noted that she since has deleted that post stating she was going to have to cancel some shows.
