The Duo with Mike Gordon, Vida Blue, String Cheese Incident, Disco Biscutes, Phil Lesh and the Family Band, Bob Weir. Foundation of Funk with Gary Clark Jr at the Orpheum on May 3rd
Wow! Vida Blue in particular interests me. They haven't played together in a LONG time, maybe like 15 years?
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

So by all accounts The Stones are definitely happening and it'll be 2nd Thursday, which is nuts.
There was some talk of them playing the first Thursday to open the 50th fest, but brass pass buyers got an email stating that their passes were good for all days of fest EXCEPT for 2nd Thurs now, as the opening day is "locals Thursday" now. Who knows though?
Phil is supposed to be playing the Joy on 1st Thurs. JRAD first weekend at Mardi Gras World definitely as well since Russo will be playing with Shpongle Live Band's final shows at Red Rocks 2nd weekend.
Speaking of which, that is f'n weak that Simon is done with live Shpongle, that has been on my bucketlist forever. Oh well. Raja Ram supposedly has serious visa issues getting into the US because of a record but I don't know if that's for real or not. He's pushing 80 so that might be it too.
The Rolling Stones - U2- Jeff Lynne's ELO - Bruno Mars - David Gilmour - Dead & Company - Widespread Panic
Wonder what their budget is for this year? If you make it to 50 years you gotta go all out. This is gonna be an epic year. Got my room booked for Thurs-Sun both weekends. Since Wanee is dunzo I can go all out for this maybe do some Daze Between too.

Wait, so Brass Passes are good for all days BUT the 2nd Thursday of JazzFest?!?! Which kind of bullshit is that? First off, that isn't even the new additional day and that used to be included in the brass pass. Secondly, don't they know that mostly locals buy Brass Passes?

I wonder if U2 is going to play or if they were even given an offer? That was what I heard, but it seems like the Stones are going to eat up a bunch of that budget. I'm not sure exactly what's going to happen, but it's possible that we could get something like Rolling Stones, Phish, ELO (who doesn't have a date here I don't think), Bob Seger & Silver Bullet Band, maybe Dead & Company since apparently most of them will also be in town? Same goes for Phish doing shit in town that weekend too. They may not play, but at least some of them will be in town doing other shit.
I'm assuming that's the same with Joe Russo and Disco Biscuits. There's liable to be a few really good late night collaboration shows and projects and with plenty of sit-ins but at like 3:00am or so (Maple Leaf, One Eyed, etc.). I'm going to try to keep an eye on that just in case. Brownie was in town last year for both weekends and did a couple of great shows (J.E.D.I. and some PL collaboration thing with Alvin Ford Jr.). With the rest of the Biscuits around, maybe they'll hook into some shit which would be cool to get some talent of that caliber into the guest/collaboration mix.

They probably need to get more asses in there to pay for the bill. It's actually kind of good news, because it says there's going to be some big shit to me.

Raise the price of the Brass Pass. They raise it every year anyway, I don't understand why they are doing that. I also think that since it is the 50th year, they are going to go all out and break the piggy bank which is going to pull people in. JazzFest does not lose money and Brass Passes at $600 are $85.72/day if you do the math (for 7 days). That is above the price of day of ticket price.
Yeah it is a little higher. I don't get the Brass Pass because I don't usually go to the festival more than 2 or 3 days. Maybe the most I'd ever hit would be 4 and it would have to be can't miss shit like Stones/U2/Phish/Panic or whatever. But I'm always down for something I want to see. I'm probably just not going to go on more generic days even though I might like the musicians (Santana, Billy Joel, Buffett, Fagan, etc.).
I guess if Sarge is right, and the Stones are going to play on the second Thursday, they can make up about 75% of the ticket sales for that day and spread the difference over the other 7 days. But if the Stones are going to get $5MM to play, 75,000 x 50 = $3.75MM, and you know that at least 35-40% of the crowd will be out of state and playing more than $50.00 to get in. So I think they can almost pay for them with that day's gates (assuming 75,000 people would go on that Thursday). (45,000 x 50.00) + (30,000 x 80.00) = $4.65MM.

I don't disagree, but I do find it extremely hard to believe that the Stones are going to play on the second Thursday. Also, it feels weird that after 49 years they add the first Thursday and make the decision to change the local Thursday to the new added day. You can't change mob mentality in a couple of months leading up to the festival.
Don't get me wrong, I totally get it, but I don't think people that have been coming to JazzFest their whole lives and those that go blindly without looking at the schedule (because you know there are locals that do that, I can think of 4 off the top of my head right now), especially on the second Thursday that was local Thursday for years are going to be happy with the decision.

Is Gilmour touring!?
He predicts Gilmour every year because he's a jerk and likes to get my hopes up. haha
OP updated with lineup in December, because I missed on the festival website that they are announcing the lineup next month. I think early in the decade (2010 or 2012) was the last time they released the lineup in December. So that means the individual weekends will probably be announced in January with the schedule out sometime in March. As VC and Sgt. Blotter noted earlier, the Brass Pass will be good for 7 days but not the traditional "locals Thursday" of the second week which is May 2nd. That almost locks up that it will be Rolling Stones. Who else would have a day all to themselves under a different ticketing scenario? I just wonder how many people they get to go that day. Thursday is always the chill day with super small crowds and almost no lines anywhere so you can sample lots of the good shit they have to eat without having to wait in any lines. But you'd think instead of 30-35,000 people, the Stones would get about 70-75k people in for that day.

2012 had that super early release of the lineup. It dropped in November or December of 2011.

Yea I would think you wouldn't want everyone in NOLA showing up for discounted tickets when the biggest rock band in the world is coming to town and hasn't played there in nearly 30 years.
"Brass Passes this year will only work for seven of the eight days of Jazz Fest. Brass Passes won’t be usable on Thursday May 2, which is going to be set aside as a commemorative day for the 50th anniversary of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival."
"Reportedly, May 2 will have a separate, higher ticket price as it’s scheduled to feature big-name performers, none of whom have yet been confirmed, although the clear front-runner has been rumored to be the Rolling Stones."
BOOOO @ hundo for roasting in the sun for The Stones. Worth it though to not be stuck in a damn chair. Will 100% be in by noon with a tarp for the first time.
Commemorative day for 50th anniversary...lol STONES BABY. take it to the bank!!

Some repeating of the offbeat article above, here is swag's take on the brass pass/thursday debacle:
Earlier this week, Jazzfest announced that they would be adding an eighth day of fest, on Thursday of First Weekend. WWOZ made a couple of announcements in reaction to this, settling on that brass passes (normally good for entry every day of fest) would be valid all 4 days of first weekend, and on Friday through Sunday of second weekend, but not on Second Thursday. But they also said they were looking into other possible solutions.
It's also apparent that WWOZ was caught off guard by the announcement, finding out about the extra day and the Second Thursday changes the same time as the rest of us. Ironically, it's only because of the WWOZ Brass Passes that we know as mush as we do: all the Jazzfest press release sais was that First Thursday was being added and it would be "local's day". All the Second Thursday info flowed from the multiple brass pass announcements.
While not all brass pass purchasers have been contacted yet, some have reported getting phone calls and emails. From this, the above dates that the brass pass will be valid for Jazzfest admission won't change again. It's not yet decided whether the hospitality tent will be open second Thursday for brass pass holders who buy a separate admission ticket for that day. And brass pass holders are being offered refunds, if they are dissatisfied - though I haven't yet heard anyone take them up on that offer.
But some tidbits about second Thursday will be of interest to everyone.
Second Thursday will be the day of the 50th Anniversary celebration of Jazzfest, and there will be one or more bigger-than-usual big-name-acts.
Second Thursday will have a separate admission ticket, priced higher than other days.
While general admission tickets for fest have always been unlimited in number, tickets for that one day may be capped.
Speculation on social media is rampant, but many are expecting a ticket price for Second Thursday in the $150-200 range. Rather than excitement about who may play (Rolling Stones?), mostly what I'm reading there are complaints, that Jazzfest is abandoning its roots and its mission with high cost and exclusivity, that annual brass pass holders are getting bait & switched, that loyal fest fans are getting left behind. Whether you agree with these sentiments or not, it's sad to read them, and it's certainly not the kind of buzz that the festival producers were hoping the 50th anniversary would create.
I'd like to see the organizers answer as many of the questions as they can (although specific band announcements may be embargoed) soon, rather than letting the discontent fester for another month or more until the promised December announcements.
Here's one email WWOZ sent out to a brass pass purchaser:
Like always, Jazz Fest is selling WWOZ ticket access for 7 days of the festival. What's different this year is that the Fest is celebrating it's 50th Birthday and has added an 8th day! What does this mean for 2019 Brass Pass holders: Jazz Fest has shifted locals Thursday to the first Thursday (April 25) and the second Thursday (May 2) will be an extremely special 50th birthday celebration. There will be fewer tickets sold on Thursday, May 2 and the cost of the ticket for that day will be higher. We don't know what the price of the ticket will be or what we happen on that day. What we do know is 2019 Brass Pass will not work on Thursday May 2.
The change to this year's fest was communicated to WWOZ the same day this announcement was made public. Jazz Fest plans to give more information in December about the fest lineup (a month earlier than they typically announce it in January). In the meantime, we are doing all we can to accommodate our loyal Brass Passers. Although your 2019 Brass Pass will not get you entry until Jazz Fest on Thursday, May 2, it is our hope to have our WWOZ Hospitality Tent open to you on that day.
We understand that this change will effect some OZillians 2019 Jazz Fest plans. Please feel free to call or email us if you have questions about what this change from Jazz Fest means to 'OZ and our members and Brass Pass holders.
Please note that 2019 Brass Passes will be valid for these seven days of Jazz Fest:
Thursday April 25 Friday April 26 Saturday April 27 Sunday April 28 Friday May 3 Saturday May 4 Sunday May 5
emphasis mine. i find it interesting that sales on second Thursday will be capped. all of this just screams Rolling Stones, with a higher ticket price to pay for their booking and limited sales so as to avoid:
