I’ve heard that tickets for the 2nd Thursday could be twice as much as the other days. The good news is that they’ll be able to keep track of how many people can get in.

It sounds like the headliner lineup may go something like this:
4/25 Widespread Panic 4/26 Santana 4/27 Dave Matthews Band 4/28 Jimmy Buffett
5/2 Rolling Stones 5/3 Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band 5/4 Big Name Artist TBD 5/5 Big Name Artist TBD (and Trombone Shorty)
Non-Stones dates/weekends are educated guesses. That lineup is missing big (female) pop/r&b (Cher/Chic?) and indie rock (Arcade Fire?) acts, which in an ordinary year I'd expect to fill the remaining slots. Given that this is a big anniversary, however, it's possible they'll go full old-school and pull in a Neil or Bruce (though Seger + Springsteen seems a little much), maybe with a local-all-star set on closing day, and leave the younger acts to second stages.

Jazz Fest noob here. Just booked a place around the French Quarter for weekend 1. Will most likely do the first night of tDB and second night JRAD. Any tips or tricks that a yung gun like myself should know?

Are you going to have a car or need transportation? If you don't have transportation, the city has a blue bike/bikeshare program and there is a bike lane on Esplanade Ave. (one of the ways to get from the FQ to the Fair Grounds). It's probably going to be hit though. You'll need the application to use those. You're about 3 miles, so it's kind of a bitch walk. I'm a little under 2 and don't mind it because I don't go every day. You might want to grab a shuttle pass as I think they have those. Thousands of people will be looking for cabs, ubers, lyfts and shit on the way out, so be mindful of that. Watch out for street hustles in the French Quarter. Most people never get fucked with, but there are always hustlers from street kids to Hare Krishnas looking to take a piece of your pie. Ignoring anyone who gets in your face is the best move. Just keep on walking without paying them any mind. Because it's jazz fest and there will be tons of drunk people (easy pickings) around, make sure to carry your wallet in a front pocket. You can easily find yourself in a crowd on the streets, and it's easy to pickpocket back pockets.
You'll be able to eat extremely well at Jazz Fest, but the earlier (or later) you go is usually the shortest lines. Go over the food menu once it comes out and see what it is that you like. Most food there is relatively cheap despite the quality. The festival is held at a horseracing track, so it's a giant oval with like 12/13/14 stages. The map they have in the festival is always a mirror image of the festival which I completely can't understand. If there is anyone at the main stage that you really want to see, you might have to set up a camp in the chair zone for a good spot. Sometimes that stage is otherwise impossible (big names and shit). You can lay down a small tarp or blanket and leave a soft ice chest or whatever on it for later. You can get to the standing area, but sometimes even that is packed all the way back to the chair/sitting areas.
A lot of people with a lot of money come to town for the festival. And it ends nightly at 7:00pm. So expect any and all great places to eat to be booked for dinner pretty much every night. If there is anywhere you want to eat at, you'll want to have your reservations in probably by February or early March at the latest. If there are any that you have questions about, post those and we'll tell you what we think/know about those places.

Awesome! This is extremely helpful. Good point about the cabs/uber situation. Will need to think about transportation more than I originally intended too.
Any suggestions in terms of restaurants and late night shows will be greatly appreciated! My friends and I are definitely hitting up tDB and JRAD shows just need to figure out which nights.
Couple general festival question: Does the festival grounds allow coolers? Should I expect to purchase the festival passes as soon as they become available in December or can I be more lassez-faire? When does Phish play? (hopefully haha)

Couple general festival question: Does the festival grounds allow coolers? Should I expect to purchase the festival passes as soon as they become available in December or can I be more lassez-faire? When does Phish play? (hopefully haha)
1) If you say what you like to eat and how much you're willing to dress up vs. be casual, we can get you some recommendations. Being in the FQ, you're pretty good for places there, the CBD and Warehouse District. There are a couple hundred places in these areas, so any filters you want (price, casual, super casual, distance, French, Italian, Mexican, seafood, steak, breweries or whatever) would make it easy to drop a few recommendations.
2) The festival does allow soft coolers, but if you forget one, most of the beer bars will give you an empty case with ice in it (for a reasonable tip). It won't last all day, but it will get you through a few rounds at least. Double check once they put out the allowed/disallowed information, but you can pretty much bring whatever you want to Jazz Fest including chairs, flags, poles, and that. You just can't put up tarps/canopies I don't think. The search coming in is a waive through a metal detector and a greeting. So if that matters, that's what you're going to get.
3) They don't sell out any of the days and will have tickets available at the gates for those coming that day without tickets. You might save like $10.00 a day or so if you get them early, but there's no need to stress over immediate buys. The one caveat to that is if you were in town both weekends, the Rolling Stones are going to sell out that second Thursday. So those are tickets you'd want to get as soon as they go on sale.
4) IDK. There are pretty rampant rumors around of side projects, so even if they don't play, you can see one or more of them with various projects.
What I'd also recommend is that you keep these two websites handy. There will be shit you'll want to see announced all the way into April. We are a 24 hour city, so if you are one of the people that is able to stay out all night, there will be pretty good 2 and 3am shows around town as well.
Satchmo Concert Line - this is the all year long listing of shows in town. There's not much up yet for either weekend, but that will change. www.satchmo.com/nolavl/concerts.html
Jazz Fest Grids - This isn't active yet for 2019, but they'll probably get it going in January. They will fill it in as shows are submitted. There is "First Weekend", "Days Between" and "Second Weekend." You can go through last year's information and see what you're likely to expect, who does late and overnight shows and that kind of thing. I'm thinking JRAD and Disco Biscuits will end sometime around 2am. So Howlin' Wolf, Republic are right there. www.jazzfestgrids.com/
My krewe is staying near the fairgrounds. We don't want to dress up. We like cheap and authentic. Plus I'm with a couple of newbs that don't know what cajun food is.
edit-did I mention we want to get weird after 7PM?

Just saw all 3 nights of Bisco at BK Bowl after phish in Vegas they are on top of their game if your into the jamtronica improv thing. Best they've sounded since 09 i'd say. So i'd def make it a point to catch at least one night of the Biscuits. Ill be at both nights. Coming down for weekend 1. gonna need to find a good show to do thursday Duo w Gordon looks pretty fun right now. already so excited for weekend 1!!!!! excited to see who the headliners of thurs-sat will be at the festival for when im there.
Looking for some good seafood spots to check out if you guys have any good recs! im staying a block from Harrahs/the fillmore!
edit-did I mention we want to get weird after 7PM?
Take amphetamines and go see the two piece Jimmy buffet cover band at tropical isle. Only drink hand grenades. When you get arrested make sure they take you to central lockup and not the touristy French quarter jail.

Highly doable. I’ll type you up some shit when I’m back at work on Friday.

I’ll get you those too. There is unlimited in that area, so it will be easy.
This is someone’s list of night shows I ran across on Jazz Fest Forum. A lot of dates are wrong and venues as well, but that doesn’t mean some or most of these shows won’t happen in some form or fashion. Black Star and Friends would be cool. First time I’ve seen Interpol noted. If Black Star is Friday, maybe I can go to that before hitting Disco Biscuits but it kind of depends on how early show time is. I’m not optimistic.
The bigger take from that thread is that the Joy will be making announcements on Tuesday according to a screen shot on drop box purportedly from The Joy.

First recommendation is to be sure to go to the food areas fairly early each day at Jazz Fest. You can get tons of Cajun, creole and other local specialties there. The food menu should be out by February or March, so I'll post that. But as you know from Jazz Fest, it would be hard for any festival to top the food offerings. As for getting weird late, you're only a couple miles from the Faugbourg Marigny (Frenchmen is there) and French Quarter. There will be night shows, late night shows and overnight shows, so just stay tuned for that stuff. You can usually find 24 hour bars all over the main areas. Near where you're staying, Wit's Inn stays open to at least 3:30am on the weekends, Holy Ground is open til at least that time, Banks Street Bar probably goes to 4am, and Mid City Yacht Club goes to 3:00am.
Alright - there aren't many options for Cajun Food, but there are a couple not necessarily right where you guys are but maybe a bit away and certainly I can get you to Creole. K-Paul's in the French Quarter, Toup's Meatery and DTB (refined Cajun with good happy hour) is out on Oak Street by Jaques Imos and Maple Leaf Bar are the Cajun places. But for stuff around the fairgrounds or within about a 2.5 mile/5 minute radius and also relatively cheap.
Lakeview/City Park/Fair Grounds/Gentilly area
A) District Donuts, Sliders & Brew - Some of the better coffee in the city if you're a coffee fan. Place gets packed by mid morning, but you can usually get in at most other times, and you can call in orders ahead. Their donuts aren't anything super special, but they're usually pretty good. They have random flavors they make that day. Their coffee is pretty good. I wouldn't put them up there with the super gourmet shit, but it's pretty elevated. If you like cold brew/cold drip, they do a nitrogen bubble coffee that zings me after about a half cup. They also have very good slider sandwiches. districtdonuts.com/menu/
B) Parkway Bakery - Decent enough po-boys and a cool, iconic New Orleans place to get a po-boy. Remember that dressed = lettuce, tomatoes, sometimes pickles and mayonnaise. If there's something you don't want out of that, just tell them, "dressed no tomatoes" or "dressed no mayo". Their shrimp po-boys are probably my favorite ones there. parkwaypoorboys.com/ Menu: parkwaypoorboys.com/menu/
C) Liuzza's By the Track - I'd assume this will be pretty packed most of the time after the festival, but it's usually decent enough. Like the original Liuzza's, it's pretty much a greasy spoon/dinner diner but they do their own cooking so it's decent and slightly more adventurous than the original. liuzzasnola.com/menu/
E) Bevi's - Pretty cool po-boy and boil hole in the wall spot at N. Carrollton @ Bienville actually does a few Cajun things there. beviseafoodco.com/
F) Mo-Pho - Superstar Chef Mike Gullata's Vietnamese/New Orleans inspired place. Their Mo-Pho Wings are some of the best in the city. www.mophonola.com/menus/
G) Church Alley Coffee - Down the street from my house and is an exceptionally good coffee shop owned by the city's best barista. They also do light breakfasts and lunches and have pastries brought in from one of the gourmet bakeries in town. Very cool place and not that expensive. Also has a hip store in the front portion called The Good Store which features locally made t-shirts and shit. churchalleycoffeebar.com/ Menu: churchalleycoffeebar.com/menu/ H) The Station coffee house and bakery - Scratch bakery and nearly excellent coffee shop on Bienville just off City Park Ave. Run by some really cool women who know what they are doing. www.thestation.coffee/ Coffee/Drink Menu: www.thestation.coffee/drinks/ Baked Goods: www.thestation.coffee/baked-goods/
I) Morning Call Coffee Stand in City Park - Open 24 hours but is all cash late night if not all the time. Decent café au lait and begniets. morningcallcoffeestand.com/
J) Little Dizzy's - This is an African American creole soul food spot that does a buffet luncheon. It's like 13/14 for fried chicken, catfish, creole gumbo* and whatever is on the menu that day. They only have a breakfast menu, but if you click the second link, you'll kind of see some of the buffet items. Creole Gumbo is a little different from traditional seafood or chicken/Andouille because they use giblets and mix seafoods and meats in them. Fairly tasty but unique. www.lildizzyscafe.net/ www.lildizzyscafe.net/#fb0=3
K) Dooky Chase - Chef Leah Chase's long time restaurant. It's an African American favorite (anyone is welcome, Mrs. Chase is a civil rights pioneer). She got mad at Obama when he put hot sauce in her gumbo. At lunch they do a buffet for about 16 or so where you can eat what you want. It's about a block down the street form Willie Mae's Scotch House which I'm not even going to bother putting up because the lines at jazz fest will be insane with people camping there starting around 9:30am. However, if you want Willie Mae's fried chicken, you can call in an order for pickup. www.dookychaserestaurant.com/
M) Bayou Beer Garden - Within a mile of where you're probably staying. This place is pretty good. Next door is Bayou Wine Garden and down the street at N. Jefferson Davis and Bienville is Bayou Bistro which are all related and owned by the same people. Also there's an African American Creole restaurant next door to Bayou Bistro called Neyow's. Menus: Bayou Beer Garden: bayoubeergarden.com/menu/ Bayou Wine Garden: bayouwinegarden.com/menu/ Bayou Bistro: www.labayoubistro.com/Menu/0/Menus.aspx Neyow's Creole Café: www.neyowscreole.com/menu.html
Toups Meatery - Jabco said this is great. I haven't been yet. The chef is Cajun, and while it's not 'cheap' it's kind of unique.
Creole Italian and Seafood and Similar Places right about Canal and Carrollton:
Mandina's - You can go in shorts and flip flops or suit and tie to this. It doesn't matter. Decent daily specials and the fried seafood is usually cooked perfectly.
Canal Street Bistro - this is run by a guy who has one Mexican and one German parent. Pretty unique and good shit. Great juice bar and decent breakfasts. But like most places in the area for breakfast, it's going to be hit during Jazz Fest. Other breakfast places in the area are Ruby Slipper which is a local chain, Biscuits and Buns on Banks Street and Wakin' Bakin'. All of those places will take phone orders, and Uber Eats covers a few hundred places in the city (WAITR App as well). So you can go that route instead of waiting outside some place for hours to get in if you want breakfast. Canal St. Bistro is good though.
Lola's - Not cheap but decent paella open for dinner 1000 Figs - Vegetarian goodness. My vegetarian brother loves this place. Also not cheap but probably worth it. it's a parked domain so I can't get the website link at work Santa Fe - Fairly okay. Margaritas are good there
Café Degas - Great French food but pricy
Nona Mia - Eh, used to be better. Is okay to drink a pitcher out on the patio, but since they merged with the Felinni's people, I don't think it's all that good anymore.

sswright915,
As I said earlier, you guys are right in the middle of everything. You're 2 blocks from the French quarter and about 6 blocks from the Warehouse District. There are literally hundreds of places to eat around there. You said you liked Seafood, and that's doable almost anywhere. But just make sure to have your reservations in by late February for anywhere you wan to go. If you are doing coat and tie stuff, any of Galitoire's, Antoine's, Arnaud's are good and all feature classic New Orleans white tablecloth shit. If you are going a bit more casual, Emeril's rules. Emeril's NOLA is pretty good too. Ms. Hayes' Stuffed Chicken Wings are awesome at NOLA if they still make them. Specifically for Seafood:
Peche - Can't recommend this enough. Uruguyan cooking techniques are utilized for the whole crispy fish. Depending on what they have, they'll probably have a few selections of whole fish served a couple of different ways. They always have redfish which is fine. But if they have Snapper or something, that's going to be superior. They won the Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in America in either 2015 or 2016. It's pretty much a can't miss place. This is owned/run by celebrity chef Donald Link.
Cochon - Also another of Chef Link's places. This is unique as hell and will be super hit during Jazz Fest. But if you can get reservations, it's worth it for the unique approach. They have a connected shop called Cochon Butcher which is a sandwich place where you can get smoked tongue and that kind of stuff as well.
G.W. Fins - I was skipping the dressier places, but Fins is one of my two favorite restaurants in the city (Bayona being the other one). Fins is run by a chef and the guy who used to be the food buyer for Ruth's Chris Steakhouse when it was still locally owned. When it went corporate, they opened up Fins. This is not a traditional New Orleans restaurant and features fresh seafood flown in daily from around the world's seafood markets. It's fucking superb, so I had to at least mention it. Yeah, it's dressy but it is a mandatory mention. It's only open for dinner. Menus are printed daily, and they usually have 8-10 different fish items (along with crab, shrimp and other things). Their wood fired scallops with mushroom butter and wild mushroom risotto is one of the best plates in the city if you like scallops.
There's always Felix's and Acme in the French Quarter. They will be hit all weekend, but both should be excellent for oysters on the half shell and certainly the typical new Orleans stuff like fried seafood, jambalaya and whatever.
La Boca - This place rules. If there are 4 of you, I'd highly recommend going there and doing the feed me. It's probably the best deal in town. It's a great chef whose family is from Panama who can cook in several Latin American and South American styles. La Boca is named after a colorful neighborhood in Buenos Aires. It's an Argentinean Steak House primarily. Don't confuse La Boca with the Brazilian type places that bring you skewers of all you can eat meat like Fogo de Chao. This is NOT that kind of restaurant. The Feed Me comes with multiple courses for like $45/person and includes Bruschetta, Heart of Palm Salad, Empanadas, Chorizo, Noqui (potato dumpling gnoci) and your choice of steak along with a desert sampler for the table. You also get table size portions of La Boca Fries, Grilled Asparagus and one other vegetable to go with the steaks. I can't recommend this enough if you have 4 people to go with. It's one of my favorite places in town. Their condiments rule. They have probably the best chimichuri I ever had and their roasted red pepper sauce also is incredible. La Boca is open until midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so you can easily get a spot as long as you get your reservations in.
Mr. B's - B's is right there on Canal Street about 3-4 blocks from where you're staying. It's a khaki type place but you can go in jeans. They have some of the best BBQ Shrimp in the city. Gumbo Yaya there is pretty well known around town. But it's worth a trip there just to get the BBQ shrimp.
Johnny Sanchez - This is Chopped Judge Aaron Sanchez's place. He cut his teeth in the restaurant industry at K-Paul's when he was very young. He always planned to move back and open a restaurant, and this is his place. It's kind of its own thing and is pretty great. They have a really good happy hour with like half price margaritas and street tacos for $2 or $3.
Luke - This was Superstar Chef Besh's (evicted from the company) casual place. They have a good oyster happy hour, and the food here is home cooked style. It's not super cheap, but it's not that bad.
Herbsaint - Pretty cool place on St. Charles Ave. herbsaint.com/
Marcello's Wine Market & Café - This place is great. It's pretty casual. They have home cooked Italian but the tables are surrounded by wine that's only marked up like 10% or so. You get to walk around pick out whatever you want to drink. The food speaks for itself, but what you can get away with here for cheap is pretty astounding. It's a great early lunch spot or also good for dinner. marcelloscafe.com/marcellos-new-orleans/new-orleans-menu/dinner-new-orleans
Anything else you're curious about that you run across, feel free to ask. I'd recommend staying away from most of the chain stuff like Gordon Biersch. I'm not a fan of Grand Isle Seafood on Fulton where you are, as I've had mixed experiences there. Many of the other restaurants on Fulton are good. That's right in front of the casino by a block or so on the Poydras/City side.
Yeah. Mandina's is kind of quintessential New Orleans. It's not the greatest and is probably rated by most people overall as a 2 star type place out of 5. But their seafood is always cooked perfectly, and staples like gumbo and turtle soup with sherry are going to be on the money. Sunday is weird there and the only day I don't want to go because of the set menus. But every other day is fine. I tried to just keep stuff within a 5 minute drive or uber of where you guys are. There are a million other places, and obviously if there's something you run across that you want to know about, just post it.

Cafe Dauphine has replaced Mandina’s as the place I bring visiting friends for quintessential New Orleans. I saw you mentioned Morning Call in City Park. What happened to them closing and being bought by Cafe du Monde?
Word on those places, but they are staying by the fair grounds so I just was putting up stuff within a couple miles of the fair grounds where Druid said they are staying. As for Morning Call, there was a lawsuit where the first bids were invalidated so they are rebidding the long term lease. Idk if they or Cafe Du Monde or Cafe Begniet will win, but one of the 3 will be in there in April
Mike Gordon is playing The Joy on Friday, May 3, 2019. Tickets go on sale this Friday at 10:00am. If I get a presale code, I'll pass it along.
Gordon's five-piece band includes Scott Murawski, Robert Walter (Greyboy Allstars), John Kimock, and Craig Myers.
Also, Dave Malone has a note on his FB account that The Radiators will be playing The Civic on Wednesday, May 1, 2018. funkkjunkie on Jazz Fest Forums says Robert Cray Band will be playing at the Festival on Friday, April 26, 2019.
Flight purchased. It's happening. I'm coming home Louisiana. Miss me?
You coming in Wed-Mon or something like that?
I can’t remember whether they release the lineup on Tuesday or Thursday? ? ? But with Buku releasing their lineup this week, I’d think Jazz Fest would release the week after. They both could be out this week, but it seems more likely the following week.

Friday May 3, 2019 @ 8pm (probably more like 9/9:30). 4th year at Republic, and the last 3 years all sold out. So you might could get 2 and sell one there and go for free, because you have to figure this will also sell out.
