Next Friday night (Saturday morning at 2:00am) @ The Maison on Frenchmen. That's actually a pretty cool venue as well. I went to the one last year which Brownie was in and the lead guitarist, but it wasn't this star studded.
Great weekend #1. I don’t know about anyone else, but I got some killer music in and missed way more. As per above Menert and Exmag was a lot of fun Thursday. We switched it to Tauk and Disco Biscuits at the Fillmore Friday night. Aron Magner came out with Tauk, but I didn’t think it was Talking Biscuits. I ran into the drummer and keyboardist from Tauk after their set and said what’s up. Saw Beny Bloom of Lettuce and told him what’s up. He later came out and played with the Biscuits. Tauk was a little more rock and looser than usual. Set 1 of TDB was kind of rock improv and set 2 was kind of trippy. A lot of people liked that set. Freaks were out. Most everyone I talked to came down for TDB more so than Jazz Fest. Eyeballs were every shape and size and looking in every direction. For Saturday, Naughty Professor opened and was as good as they always are. Biscuits set 3 was pretty good but Gutwillig’s green Fender was out of tune. They more than made up for it, but it was irking me and making me feel like it could have been better. Intermission ends and they come out for set 4. Fucking killer all the way. Jabco had been bitching about the more hectic and complicated sets 1 and 2 not delivering that jam bliss. But they did a 180 Saturday, made him happy to the point he told me it’s the best show he’s seen this year. I’m going to have to agree. It may not end up #1 by year end, but I’ll expect it will fall within Top 4 for me.
Today I went to jazz fest on a whim. I decided to just walk the couple miles and see what I could get into. I found the Cuban food and got a bowl of ropa vieja over rice and peas and a cafe con leche coffee popsicle. Greatness. So I want to go see Helen Gillet but first I wanted that Martinique chicken and curry. I circled for like 35 minutes trying to find it and eventually found the kiosk. They had a nice little habanero sauce, and overall it was delicious. I would have personally liked a little pinch of salt but otherwise it was great.
I finally got to Helen. I can’t remember if she plays viola or small cello, but she kicks ass. I got there in time for the last couple songs. She brought out Nikki Glaspie for the very last song which was a really chill drum and bowed upright duet. I went over to The O’Jays because when are you going to see them? That was fun. Next I went and tried to post up for Indigo Girls. Jazz Fest fucked up and oversold that show at the Zydeco stage. It was overflowed, and the crowd was pretty unique. Initially it wasn’t loud enough but they fixed that. Set was pretty incredible. I’d been wanting to see them for a long time, and it was worth it. They ended with Closer to Fine which was the highlight. Next up was J Balvin. After seeing some of Coachella, I figured it was worth a few minutes. Crowd was pretty small and the show wasn’t very good. I lasted maybe 3 songs and said fuck it. Al Green is at the next stage and I actually want to see him. I spent about 20 minutes there. He had the black suit on and singing straight into the sun. More power to him. Let’s Stay Together was the highlight while I was there. I figured I’d round the track and see all the other headliners. First was 10 minutes of Van Morrison. It was fine, but I didn’t have any expectations. I walked over to Johnny Rivers and watched a couple songs before finishing up at theJazz Tent for the last 15-20 minutes of Ellis Marsalis and his family (Wynton, Branford) and a couple grandkids. That was the happy ending. Shit was overall killer. Two nights of Disco Biscuits til 4am then a picture perfect spring day with Indigo Girls, O’Jays and Al Green was fucking good. I’m out of town through mid week, but I’m excited about next weekend.
Also, I randomly wore my Kraftwerk T-shirt from the 3DTour back in 16(?) and got 11-12 shout outs. I have a lot of crazy ass rock T-shirts and maybe get 1 or 2 calls a night. But this shit was crazy. Men, women, people aged maybe 17-65. Haha. You have to love it. A bunch of people told me they saw the 3D tour too, so that was fn great

Went to JF two days this wknd. Have to admit that Pine Leaf Boys were the best band I saw. The lead guy is a total force on accordion/piano/vocals. Totally blew me away. Revivalists did a solid set for a huge crowd, nice to see home town boys made good. Midnight Disturbers were also good - so many NOLA brass icons up there, hard to go wrong. Kristin Diable and Luke Winslow King both played the Lagnaippe stage and were just right for that space. They're both meant for smaller spaces. Leon Bridges was easily the biggest disappointment - it's as if he decided he didn't like the retro-soul sound of the first record and wanted to become a 1970s big R&B band. I left halfway thru. Wandering out, saw the final 20 mins of Katy Perry and though I am not a fan, she delivered a big pop show the way it should be done. She's a pro. Meat pies and crawfish enchiladas were the food highlights. So damn good.
Just checked into hotel. 5 nights of partying starts tonight with foundations of funk Prolly gonna get my noodle on at the fest tomorrow and then throw my panties at Tom Jones, then catch CLD, then hopefully catch Benny and Quentron play ‘shitty stones’ Not sure if I will do fest Friday yet but may do ghost note or night sweats before Bastard Jazz Yim Yames Sunday night and whatever I decide on in between. Then back home to rest before driving to b’ham for Tool Tuesday. Then back home for a day of rest before returning back to the gauntlet of pain.
Nice. I drove back from PCB this morning so I couldn’t get there as early as I wanted. I stopped off for Cuban and headed over to watch some of Dumpstaphunk. They brought out Karl Denson and Taz to cover Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’ by the Stones. They also played Gasman while I was there so that was cool. I walked past Big Sam on the way to see a couple minutes of Rita Coolidge. Her voice was a bit raspy, but the band sounded good. I went over to Guitar Masters to get about 15 minutes of that and then I made my way over to Panic. I had every intention on stopping past Mavis Staples, Tom Jones and Ziggy Marley, but I found a shaded spot and figured 2:30 of Widespread would hit the spot. It did. There was some slop and Jimmy did a lead at one point that was out of key with whatever the band was jamming on. But I didn’t care. The good will always outweigh any issues at Panic. So it was q lot of fun to chill back and watch the show. Got night 1 of 3 more of String Cheese Incidents so even though I’m beat to the core, I’ll find a way to get that accomplished. Ran into Steve Gleason and his family at Panic and blew him a kiss and said what’s up. That’s both days I’ve gone this year that he was there. Never surrender indeed.
Bedtime update is that i had to wuss out and leave Cheese intimate early because I have work at 8. Cheese was good and getting better toward 1, but I was on streetcar or foot. Everyone else was at Lettuce Rage which was also sold out. Cheese has the most dreds per capita this weekend. Haha but maybe people not as on the edge as Biscuits wknd 1. I caught the streetcar with some freaks who had just left Claypool Lennon. This one cat had a Court of T-shirt and was all blabbering about the In the Court of cover. I’m thinking that’s maybe #9 or #10 on the list of best KC albums but whatever. He said Mike Gordon strolled out and played with them and then a bit of Skerik. Cool shit. Too much shit to get into to do 5% but I think tomorrow of work > SCI at Mardi Gras World with Pigeons and then Les Claypool’s bastard Jazz (also sold out for whatever reason) ought to be a good time. I don’t have to work Saturday so it’s about to get going.
Fest was fun yesterday and the weather was perfect. Probably the best panic show I’ve ever seen. The Dr John covers with GPJ sitting in were great. CLD show was f’n epic. Mike Dillon, Mike Gordon, and Skerik sit ins and the Les and Sean stage banter made it a truly special show. I walked over the Orpheum and caught the second set of Cheese afterwards and had a lot of fun. Night capped at Waffle House near hotel.
I’m definitely gonna do the fest again on Sunday for little Feat, Shaka Kahn, and Fogerty. Hopefully the weather will be nice again and the grounds won’t be a mud pit after the rain tomorrow.

What time did it end? They were just starting to incorporate more of their light show when I blew out at 1. You hitting Bastard Jazz tonight or do you have other late plans?

I got there at 12:30 and it went till like 2ish. They let me in for $10 at the door. Lol I will definitely be at Bastard Jazz. I have a front row vip balcony ticket. May do ghost note @ music box village and something else before that. May do Mule @ Orpheum tomorrow night.

This is the most "jazzfest circa 2001-2003" post I've ever seen.
Haha nice. My middle son told me that Lettuce kicked ass last night. He said they brought out Oteil and Krasno. He said that even though he's seen Oteil, he had no idea how great of a bass player he was until they let him rip it and then played off of wherever he was leading. He said it ended around 2:20/2:25am which is kind of early for Rage! Fest. But if it satisfied, I don't guess it matters what time it ends.

The Pigeons guys were looking a bit tired after Red Rocks last night. Hope they got in a nap this afternoon and put on a proper show for you.
Cheese was beyond ridiculous. Fucking shit. Pigeons jammed too. So good tonight. At Les. This shit is bonkers. I’ll put today without even going to jazz fest up against whatever. I think Longinus will back me up.
Pigeons was very good again. Cheese is psychotic. Set 1 (5) ended with 25 minutes of Tony Hall, Ian Neville and Uncle Ivan. I should have known the first song but w/e. They then went into Neville Brothers Yellow Moon and Fiyo on the Bayou. Rolling with cmack. Got set 2 and if we do Break Science or Kamasi super late. ?
Edit to say that the second (6th) set of Cheese ruled like a mf. That shit was the best show I’ve seen this year along with TDB night 2. We decided to go hit One Eyed Jacks for Break Science. They played until about 4:45. It wasn’t my favorite set ever by them but they kicked it in for the second half. We walked to Cleo’s to get some Middle Eastern and ran into Brownie from Disco Biscuits who was apparently still in town. So we talked with him for a while and then told him come back again next year for round 3 and also bring back Conspirator. Haha. Borahm Lee said it was his 17th JF and Deitch’s like 20th or so. It’s great when musicians lock into coming back and doing interesting collaboratives and new shows. Got sunrise in for the first time in a while. Top of the weekends would be:
1. SCI Night 3 2. Biscuits Night 2 3. SCI Night 2 4. Biscuits Night 1 5. Widespread Panic 6. Les Claypool’s Bastard Jazz 7. SCI Night 1 8. Indigo Girls 9. PPPP Night 1 T. Michal Menert
Here’s an excellent quality 33 minutes of Les Claypool’s Bastard Jazz featuring Skerik, Mike Dillon and Stanton Moore. If you know...
Continuing with a bomb augmented version of Mr. Wright and I’ll say that you’re going to get certain musical shit at jazz fest you aren’t going to get anywhere else
Next year’s 51st annual event will span April 23 – May 3, 2020, with eight festival days again (April 23 – 26 and April 30 – May 3). For the most up-to-date Jazz Fest info
Jazz Fest was absolutely magical. This is one I plan on revisiting as often as I can. NOLA treated us right and of course Vieux was the perfect host and our calm center in the storm of Jazz Fest. Diana Ross was probably my favorite show and the food. UGH THE FOOD.
in the video he says daltrey has bronchitis, so they are rescheduling some shows, and then mentions they are also playing jazzfest around that time.
thats cool, i debated buying tickets because they dropped to $4, definitely a WHAT YEAR IS IT moment, but i got locked out because i didn't decide to pull the trigger until after the show had started. then they stopped the set and Roger left. April sounds like a nice time for a 2nd shot.

Awesome. You should probably make a new thread for 2020. I loved The Who when they played Jazz Fest a couple years ago. I'll be at that again. Daltrey+Townshend are icons from the OG Days of Rock (Who/Beatles/Stones/etc.). Since we probably won't get many more chances, I'll see them whenever they come through.
No 2020 thread? Umm..okay. Lineup for this is coming on Thursday!
I don't frequent their message board so don't know if this is rumor, guess or valid information but here's what I've gathered as some of the top names that could be on it:
The Who, Dead and Co, Foo Fighters, Tedeschi Trucks, Avett Brothers, Lizzo, Wilco
