You realize I've been posting about this stuff for six weeks and that the people at the "Jazz Fest Forum" might not be the original sources of their material, right?
That is not even relevant to what I posted. What I responded to, is that you assumed that the change of face was from the same person, but it was two different people's opinion. I give zero fucks how long you have been posting or where your "scoops" are from.
PT JF OP who is usually reliable saying that the Fillmore will have a Foundations of Funk show with Ivan and fn Keith Richards. wtf? They would be opening for Xpensive Winos which seems more unlikely since it doesnt' look like they've played since the early 90's.
Sounds hard to believe but I would def try to make it to this if it does.
Also rumored that Ween is playing the Joy first weekend. Please be true.

I am interested to see what Quint does at Congo. Does he try Gambino or play it slightly smaller with Snoop? Or maybe try to add in a reunion type show with Snoop/Dre or something crazy. Beyond that, did he grab Raconteurs with a new record?
FWIW, my fav princess comment by far was "Saw Kacey a few years back in a small room for like $20, assuming they didn't waive me in that time. The Chili Peppers' manager was there." OMG, how hilariously insecure.

Newbie here and you seem to be the resident expert - any experience or advice with purchasing the different, non-GA ticket packages? Trying to decide, considering this year seems to be gearing up for insanity especially with the Stones, if the VIP stuff would make the experience more seamless. Or on the other hand if there's a specific VIP ticket to really avoid cause it's not worth the additional cost or whatever.
Also, what's the scoop on these night shows you mentioned? How do they work in conjunction with JF? Do you buy tix separately? Do they conflict with the JF headliners? Sorry if that's a dumb question, ha.
We always do GA. I do VIP for Voodoo and Buku, but I've just never seen any value in Jazz Fest's higher priced tickets for the cost. There is an area in front of the rail that you can watch some of the BNA shows, but the pricing was astronomical if I can remember so I never ever bothered. There were only 2 shows I couldn't get to (Fleetwood Mac and Springsteen a few years ago), but otherwise, I've always been able to find a spot or a just watch from the horse race track. If you want a place to sit down, you'll have to be in line early on busy days in order to get a spot to post up at.
Other people may have experience with higher tiered tickets that they could shed light on. The night shows are all unaffiliated with the festival. There are probably 300-400 more that will come out for those days. You can follow along as they get filled in at Satchmo Concert Line and Jazz Fest Grids.
The night shows won't conflict with the Jazz Fest Headliners. The festival runs from like 11:30am to 7:00pm and that's it (although occasionally it will go to 7:10/7:15 or so). Many venues have early shows (8/9), many have later shows 10/11/12, and many then have overnight shows starting around 2:00/2:30am. Republic, Howlin' Wolf, Tip's and others will do some overnight shows. Those are pretty fun because everyone's been going for 12-15 hours before they even start. On a typical Jazz Fest Day that I go, I'm liable to be going out for a late show and then an overnight show after that. Most of the shows should be pretty reasonable with the exception of Preservation Hall Midnight Preserves (might want to read up on those if there is someone in town that you would want to see playing there unannounced) and some of the Saenger shows that double as fundraisers. But all the Tips/Howlin' Wolf/Republic/Café Istanbul/Blue Nile and whatever shows should be between $15-30 or so. There's also a really cool new venue on the SE side of town (downriver from downtown) called Music Box Village. We caught the Residents there last year on the Monday between weeks. It's a pretty sick venue, and they do sell out for bigger shit that plays there (e.g. Animal Collective). Keep an eye out for that venue as it's liable to release some random acts for around Jazz Fest.
Let me know if you have any other questions or if I served to confuse any of this shit that I was hoping to clarify.

So the major headliner sets are done by pretty much 7ish each night? That makes sense now. Yeah, the VIP I know are pricey, so I'll probably just end up doing GA. I was mainly trying to think of logistics and justifying the cost in terms of knowing I have a dedicated, raised viewing area with being able to go back and forth to a bathroom/buy drinks in a less crowded space while the set is going on (i.e. the Big Chief ticket). The Stones are what I'm most worried about for this, but probably can't justify VIP just based on that (unless I win the lottery between now and Tuesday).
Yeah, I think you got it right there. Bathrooms are not really an issue except sometimes getting to the outside of the track where they are if there's a sea of people. And you can usually find a bar pretty easily though you might have to go a couple down from the closest one to the front of wherever you are in order to find shorter lines.
The main thing with the headliner sets is that they all conflict with each other. You can split them, but typically you'd be looking at something like this for the close:
Main Stage - Santana Gentilly Stage - Cage the Elephant Congo Square - Snoop Dogg/Anita Baker Blues Tent - Buddy Guy Jazz Tent - Dave Koz or whoever Gospel Tent- big Gospel Act Cajun/Zydeco Stage - Rockin' Doopsie
Some of the smaller stages also do closing sets. I was able to find a .PDF of one of the days' "cubes" from last year that I went. This should help make sense of the way they schedule:
Am I thinking correctly that if I decide to go GA and plan to go all days, the Brass Pass (plus an additional GA ticket for the Stones' Thursday) is probably the most cost efficient? Plus I'd get reentry privileges too?
