Day 1 weather was shitty but not unbearable. I got there in time to catch the last few songs of Des Rocs. They were a decent rock band. Next I went over to see Michigander. They are kind of a weird indie band. They are super young and said it was their first major festival they played. Could be okay in a few years though sort of minimalistic. Next was some soulful reggae and rock from Magic City Hippies. They were pretty good, and props to them for taking a pelting by the rain. I wanted to go see Templo and Grandson, but it was storming pretty hard so I stayed under cover for a while. Next was a solid Moon Taxi set. They're always good live and were again. They're also always super fucking loud, and they were loud as shit again. I went over and caught about 20 minutes of Cray. She's okay but nothing special. Next was Brandi Carlile. Her band is badass, and she again was great. She ended up with a great version of Babe I'm Gonna Leave you off Led Zeppelin I that was excellent. They were into it and having a good time. Good set. I was supposed to split Peekaboo with Interpol, but instead I just went to Interpol. Their sound was great. This was a much much better show than I expected. Finally I went back to Altar for Guns N' Roses. I'm not a big fan or anything, but I always liked them. This show was really really good I thought. I jammed out the whole 3 hours (or however long they ended up playing). Duff, Axl and Slash were really good. I knew it would be good, but I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. They played everything you knew they would and ended with a cover of The Seeker by The Who and a really fucking good version of Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden into Paradise City. Fucking right. 5 stars for GNR. Also the Velvet Revolver Slither cover was badass. I got home and realized I had lost my phones. Haha. Walked back to the park and lo and behold they were next to each other on the ground in the plastic bags I had them in. I busted my ass leaving the grounds in the slop, and they must have fallen out. Slim chance I was ever going to find them, but luckily I did. Great first day of Voodoo despite the shitty weather. I'll be wandering around most of the day open minded until the Denzel Curry > The National > The Glitch Mob > Beck/Bassnectar run which I'm really looking forward to later on. See y'all there.

100% agree. I expected to like Brandi and GNR but I loved them both. GREAT sets. Boots and poncho and that was a lot of fun. Ready to do it all again today in no rain.

LOTS of damage out there today after the storm last night. Perimeter fence was shredded, Altar and Le Plur lost LED tiles, FOH tent at wisner collapsed. They have lots of work to do to get it open for gates at noon.
Last night was amazing, even with all of the weather issues. Went to the late night show at the joy that Win Butler put on. Left around 4ish i think, mo Zhu, but The drummer from big G rolled through and played. Twas a good night
If y’all see The Wizard of Oz crew today, I’m the TinMan
I slept through all that shit Saturday morning. Winds blew out one of the video boards at main stage. Overall I felt like they did a nice job handling the weather issues so good for them. I got in without much of an early plan. Chef had a pot of crawfish etouffe going; so I had that for breakfast and it took a while to crack some of the old stiff bones back into place. I walked past Hello Yello which was a little more rocked up than their studio work and over to Sun Seeker who was a chill band. Next was a relatively fun show by Serotones. They are always decent and seem like they might be on the way to breaking through. There’s a lot of talent in that band. I walked over to Brutus which was a very entertaining set. You knew it would be, but they are competent. The bass player plays long on the fretboard giving them a deeper sound. The guitarist (I think) used some alternative tuning. The drummer is the star, and she is both a credible drummer and singer. They played a lot of 4:4 beat shit, but often sped up into old time hardcore beats. Hard to describe their sound but I’d say Enya meets Fugazi. Good show with a small early but appreciative crowd. Next I went back to the main stage and watched Shaed. It was white R&B from DC. I liked the drummer even if the music wasn’t my thing so I watched a bit of that. I walked over to See Whipped Cream but she couldn’t make it so they had Paz up there. It was generic. I went back over to the main stage to see some of Young the Giant. I never really liked them all that much, and I had watched them before. But they sounded good and kept my attention while I was there. Went opposite energy from them after with Denzel Curry. This was one of my most anticipated shows of the day and I think 3rd or 4th time seeing him. It was a madhouse. He’s probably my favorite midcard rapper, and he again had a great show. The National came on after that and was everything you could want from them except the fucking set was only 60 minutes. Next was The Glitch Mob who I haven’t seen since like 2014 or so. I’m not sure why I ever liked them, but they do put on a fun show. So it was a nice little EDM break there. I went to main stage to see Beck who opened up with Loser. I stayed about 25 minutes and was loving the show. Went to Bassnectar who was great though I’d say it wasn’t my favorite set ever by him though solid. Pretty cool day for me with that decent evening run.

I agree with a lot of this. Denzel Curry went off and the crowd was way into it. Throwing in that Rage cover at the end was like gas on a fire. I was going to see some of Bassnectar but Beck brought the A game party and I never left - he was awesome.
I did just Fri and Sat (not really enough to get me there today). I scored a free VIP upgrade on Friday when the sent out the notification on the app. Brandi was my most anticipated set and she did not disappoint. I enjoyed GnR and am glad I saw them, but I’m definitely glad I left after the first hour or so to see Big G. I’m not a big EDM fan but that was the best Le Plur set I’ve ever seen. They brought out Soul Rebels and Trombone Shorty as well. As far as food goes, everything is about $9 and the NOLA Schnitzel at Bratz Y’all is about twice as much food as anything else you can get and fucking delicious. If you’re looking for bang for your buck, there’s not a better choice.
Grounds were starting to dry up yesterday, but there wasn't much to excite me. I started off with The Ghost of Paul Revere. They were a bluegrass band from Maine. They had a pretty energetic crowd for the first set of the day. They were decent and finished with a cover of Billy Preston's Nothing from Nothing. Extra credit to them for claiming to be from the other Acadie (Maine has a lot of French Canadians). I went over to Duncan Fellows who was a fairly good rock band. They cover a Daniel Johnston song (True Love Will Find You) as he had just died in September, and they wanted to pay tribute to him. I walked over to catch the end of Ashe. She was saying something about The Sugarcubes, but I don't know enough of their music to know if she they did a cover. She was pretty likable and finished with Sometimes People Suck. I went over to Le Plur and was mostly annoyed by k?d's set. He had some hard drops, but it was mostly annoying to me. I went to about 20 minutes of Temples. They were kind of weird. They definitely rocked and were talented, but the singer's falsetto was on the grating side. They were okay. Next was a trip to see Opiuo. They were having some difficulties getting all his percussion stuff plugged in and hooked up. But after about 10 minutes, he was good. This was a fun show and was looking like it would end up being the highlight of the day which is what I expected. Lots of fun and people getting down to this set. I walked over to the last 15-20 of Bring Me the Horizon and wanted it to be harder than it was. They had the most tattoos per capita of any act I saw this weekend. But like Blink 182, you expect more than emo shit. But whatever. I went over to Sheck Wes expecting a good show and hoping it could match some of the intensity from Denzel Curry the day before. Sheck said he was in the ER the day before and one of his friends died, so he was dedicating him the show. DJ started off with a bunch of Lil Wayne. Then Sheck came on and it was pretty hyped up. He rapped a few songs and then said he had something brand new and stormed off the stage. I asked one of the security people what was up, and he said "it was all his fault" so I don't know if he fucked something up or what, but there was still 20 minutes left. I walked over to Missio who was kind of freaky. I felt like I probably should have been at that show all along. It wasn't great, and there were some parts I didn't like, but I had a pretty positive opinion of the sound. I decided to go hit Rezz since it was between her and Post Malone. I don't generally like Rezz and have spoken unfavorably about her performances in the past. But this show was a lot of fun. Somehow she managed to salvage an otherwise uneventful day with a hard driving set. Good for her. More later on or tomorrow, but my Top 10:
1) Guns N' Roses 2) Brandi Carlile 3) Denzel Curry 4) The National 5) Rezz 6) Brutus 7) Opiuo 8) Interpol 9) Moon Taxi T) Bassnectar
That Beck show is sticking with me days later. Will be one of those I always remember. Japanese Breakfast was really good, would like the chance to see them/her again. We did end up leaving to check out Denzel Curry, then ended up at the end of Jai Wolf and enjoyed that. Guns N Roses was a highlight for sure, they sounded great. Brutus, Interpol, The National were all great.

Took me a few days to dry out, but overall I had a blast. Top sets had to be Brandi, Guns, Denzel, Beck, Moon Taxi, Brutus, Post. Not sure who I'd say was my number 1, though Beck's set was pretty close. My rubber boots definitely were worth the $25 I paid for them last year. Felt like the grounds had more work done this year - those two big paths were a good addition. I really wonder what, if anything, City Park can do about drainage. I know the entire city floods these days if it rains more than a 1/2 inch, but still seems like they need to invest some cash to get those grounds more apt to move water. Overall, I had fun and will be back next year.
Yeah, the temporary hardscape paths were a great addition. I always have waterproof shoes so when those things were crowded, it was smooth sailing getting around.
I liked the temporary hard paths as well. I apparently agree with both of you on the top music choices from the weekend. We also had shitloads of fun. All of my kids and I are much more apt to see the stuff at Hulaween on any given day or weekend, but it just can't rise to the heights you're going to get at Voodoo even if the overall collection of musicians is better or more suited. I fully understand DueDylangence being closer to Hula and getting an arts and lights trippy experience if there's enough there music wise to satisfy someone's tastes. Camping is cheaper than having to find a place to stay in another city. But it's the opposite for us who live in a given city city vs. camping since it doesn't cost us anything to stay. Plus, while String Cheese is one of my all time favorite bands (and current #3 show year-to-date for me), the best Cheese set isn't rising to the level of what GNR did on Friday in any universe. That's pretty much the way it is every year. We all love Spirit of Suwanee, and maintain that we'd go to both if they were on opposite weekends. Until then, we are all planning to continue hitting Voodoo annually and watching whatever we can get from Hula on YouTube. There's no chance they're on different weekends next year as Halloween is on a Saturday.
Final thoughts - good running into and watching Brutus with Jabco and then catching billion throughout the weekend. Sorry I missed Zhu sitting in with Beck. Not sorry about missing a second of Snails or Big Gigantic for the GnR set. Give me some legacy or established acts for Sunday instead of calibrating the lineup so young that it was skewed. I also missed Moss as my phones were off/on fd all weekend.
