Honestly this looks significantly better today after having seen the top heavy mess of BC and just the appalling awfulness of Firefly
You're not kidding. The top two lines of each BC day are awesome for my tastes, but then they drop right off a cliff with the exception of Friday and a couple of select artists Saturday and Sunday.
It comes down to the fact that, if you're charging me Coachella $$ there should be no drop off. Point blank

Firefly is just plain bad. Boston Calling is not too bad but not for $399 - Rage must be getting paid! I would have considered just going on their day but alas, it's also the one day where I have absolutely zero interest in the undercard, so I must hope for a NYC or Philly date at some point.
I too am waiting for the MSG date I probably will get shut out of
I love Rage and I really wished we got them. Admittedly rhcp and foos ive seen multiple times and they don’t resonate that well with me but in all honesty. Having said that after the lineups released today i think GovBall is head and shoulders above both Boston calling and firefly GovBall >>> firefly > Boston calling. Underwhelming release day today. Both firefly and Boston calling missed out on a lot of great GovBall undercard acts.
GovBall always do such a good job with the undercard for me and I think they did great this year. I just wish Vampire Weekend and Tame were switched because i would prefer to see vampire and that undercard on Friday is throughout fantastic. I will most likely be seeing everyone Friday.
Seems like Governors Ball is pushing Saturday single day the most right now, I keep getting ads in my Facebook feed plugging the 6th. We here seem to leaning Friday, the Facebook kids Sunday, so maybe GB is seeing the same and trying to pull Saturday up.
11/28 Raveonettes (Copenhagen, Denmark) 12/4 Interpol 12/14 LCD Soundsystem 12/31 Billy Joel 1/25 The Killers (Las Vegas) 2/12 Jack White 2/25 Father John Misty 3/6 Inhaler 4/10 Franz Ferdinand 4/17 Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds 5/15 Amyl & the Sniffers 5/18 Fontaines D.C. 9/1 Oasis

I think the big selling point for GovBall is the undercard but for me as im getting older i cant do the 12 - 11 shift for 3 days anymore...im just as happy to shell out the 125 to be comfortable from 5 or 6 to close and see the top acts..which is why id do BC for RTJ and Rage (pending no MSG show gets added)
I know it’s a stretch but anyone think it’s conceivable Rage is going to end up doing their own small festival on randalls like the old days? And that’s why gov ball couldn’t land them?

I think MSG....seeing as how they own BC
And MSG owned panorama by extension and that happened at Randall’s

I'm wondering if it was the price tag that squelched Rage at GovBall - like, they looked at what it would take to get them on board, and decided to spend that money elsewhere.

Was it this thread or the Coachella thread where people were doubting My Chemical Romance's status as headliners? Well their reunion arena tour went on sale this morning and instantly sold out every night. 3 nights in the NYC area, including Barclays Center where the cheapest tickets were over $200 after fees.
They could've easily been our #1 over the headliners we got.

Yeah looks like they blew it playing Riot Fest over doing 2 Chicago shows

And yet, I'm really, really happy that they're not. #sorrynotsorry
EDITED TO ADD: I'd argue that this isn't necessarily an indicator that they would have crushed it at GovBall, though. Look at TOOL - their two area shows sold out almost instantaneously this year, but their 2017 headlining set at GovBall didn't exactly break the bank.

Tool releasing a new album after 13 years generated significant interest. MCR after being gone for 8 years, would have outdrawn all the 2020 Gov Ball headliners.

I have a hard time thinking that. They'd have to play a weekend in real close proximity to Govball during their time on the east coast between BC and Firefly and that would complicate Founders load in and the grass situation etc. I think Founders would pressure the city not to issue the permits. Better bets are on MSG or Liberty State Park. Maybe MetLife Stadium or Yankee Stadium as outlier bets.

MCR has a prime festival age fanbase. Old enough to have buying power and be able to drink. Young enough to not actually dread or not attend a festival for being a festival. Their Coachella fee was apparently $4 million and the dynamic pricing that went into affect for their arena tour was pushing Rolling Stones level price tags, $300 for nosebleeds. I have no doubt they were asking for a large sum of money and fests just weren't gonna bet that type of money on them after just one Shrine auditorium reunion gig doing well. Now everyone but Riot fest is probably kicking themselves
If you don’t look at the top of this line up and see something clearly didn’t go according to plan until fairly late in the game you’re almost certainly mistaken. Fill in whatever name you want.

Didn't that happen in 2016 and The Killers were a last minute replacement?

Yep they were a last minute replacement, and it's hurting my head trying to remember who they said was originally gonna headline.
I'm thinking MCR was the drop according to this. Makes it seem like they dropped from a bunch of fests. Also lines up with the Jan 16 lineup drop.
HitsDailyDouble reported that My Chemical Romance were headlining Coachella, but when Frank Ocean decided to play last minute they bumped MCR down to second line. Due to the terms of the contract they still got their 5 million guarantee.
It's possible some festivals like Govball either didn't have faith in them as a top 3 name, and/or didn't wanna drop the 4-5 million.
Still interesting that it was Frank Ocean that bumped them and not RATM.

Allegedly, LCD Soundsystem was the booking until they signed a multi-fest deal with GV, and then The Strokes were booked instead.

GovBall dropped some Friday schedule intel on Instagram:
- No overlap at all between Tame, Miley, and Stevie.
- Neither Khruangbin nor Foals will overlap with any of those 3 artists.
- I also asked if I’d be able to see all of Khruangbin, Foals, Stevie, and Tame, and was told I would.
This is all great news...although I’m thinking I might have to sacrifice Danny Brown to see that full four-act run I mentioned in that last point, which is a bit of a bummer.
As a PS, they also responded to someone’s question that Max and Oliver Tree won’t overlap on Saturday.

No overlap for those 5 Friday basically means im in. Im really pumped that will be a fantastic day of music
Great news indeed! I work one train stop from 125th St. so I could sneak out of work a little early and see Snail Mail, Kraungbin, Foals (been wanting to see them forever) and Tame (FINALLY with the new album out)- stay one night in NY, then go Saturday for Jay Som, Pup, Pinegrove, Steve Lacy, OMAM, Carly Rae, P.TM, VW (schedule permitting). This would mean only one miserable round trip from central NJ to Randall’s Island for two solid days of music.
I think GovBall did a really nice job of grouping artists by day. Works out perfectly for me for two single days.

Welp, Rage two nights at MSG (with Run the Jewels opening) in August. I guess it's no surprise they didn't end up on the GovBall lineup - if I could anticipate selling out two nights at that large a venue, controlling the entire production and reaping a larger portion of the financial return, I'd probably opt for that over playing one festival night, too.
