if people forge vaccine documentation and I have the vaccine they’re only hurting each other so...
Except then the virus sticks around. We don’t have to get follow up vaccines if we can eradicate a disease
I didn’t know anyone was banking on eradicating it in a world where polio and measles are still around when they were supposed to have also been “eradicated”. As long as getting the vaccine is a choice/ inaccessible to some people, it will never be eradicated.

It *could* be eradicated, but it won’t be, because muh freedomz.
That said, the flu kills tens of thousands of people in the US every year, and we lived “normally” despite that fact. If, through therapeutics and vaccination, we were able to wrestle COVID-19 down to that level or below it, it could be something we just end up living fairly normal lives with.

think you are miscalculating the incentive structure here. Measles and polio are more or less children's diseases, and the main spread is in schools. Children don’t spend money, so there’s no concern for businesses to make sure the spread of polio or measles doesn't occur. Businesses will not allow this vaccine to be a choice, because it is old rich people who are the most likely to stay inside during this pandemic, due to risk factors and not having to go work as an essential worker. Everywhere is going to need proof of vaccine to enter, and my guess is the company that will run with the verification will be CLEAR which is the private firm a lot of airports use for faster verification.
To be clear even tho this will likely work out in this case, this is obviously a bad system. But I do think the festivals and shows we love to go to will be back and running a lot faster than some on here think.

I think the answer is somewhere in between. Look where we are *now*. We know masks work. We know social distancing works. How many businesses aren’t mandating mask use? How many businesses are allowing people in without any sort of restrictions?
The problem is, even if, like, 95% of people and businesses mandate vaccination, which I think is being optimistic, that remaining 5% will be enough to ensure the virus never fully gets squashed.

might be different where you are but in the DC area businesses have been pretty strict on mask enforcement outside of indoor restaurants

I live in Brooklyn and work in health care show so maybe that’s why I couldn’t be more pessimistic about this turnaround. But I hope I’m wrong.

It's such a bummer that this is the time of the year when we'd be barreling toward a lineup announcement, typically. Sigh. I even miss arguing with the Kanye stans as to why he shouldn't headline.

It would be awesome to hear why I’m too old to appreciate three headlining Travis Scott sets. The good ol days.
Maybe the one upside from this year is we won't have to deal with a disappointing headliner like Kings Of Leon?
I have to say in 2010 when they were set to headline and then got rained out due to the monsoon but did a mid day set on Saturday instead not only was that really cool of them and the fest but their set was actually really good!

*2013
They most likely did that because, I believe from I heard that year, they got the biggest check ($750k) of all the headliners.

OK, so...odds this actually goes down? I feel like we'll be in one of 3 scenarios:
1) Vaccination program works, numbers are way down, full speed ahead! 2) Vaccination program much slower than expected, pandemic still ongoing, fest definitely canceled. 3) Some kind of fuzzy gray area where it's not perfectly clear how safe or unsafe something like this would be.
I feel like that third one is both the most likely and the hardest to predict.
If it’s coming soon Coachella is coming sooner or they’re releasing with a bunch of blanks.
I will say here in NY the vaccine roll out has been somewhat tricky butttt I think that's bc theres such a high demand for it...if this continues I think we can be on the path to fall festivals...Dr Fauci did mention fall as being the target date for concerts pending herd immunity (around 70% of the pop.)

Everything depends on vaccine participation and availability. I work in a nyc hospital and let me tell you the vaccine participation for employees is NOT what they wanted/ where it needs to be among the staff.
I am being an optimist - however, I already know a three day will be out for me as I am committed to Sea.Hear.Now the weekend before right now. IF GovBall has Pearl Jam then I will change that but it's unlikely I think. But, I could go for a single day depending on lineup. Had to think a second if I already had 2020 refunded or not, lol.
11/28 Raveonettes (Copenhagen, Denmark) 12/4 Interpol 12/14 LCD Soundsystem 12/31 Billy Joel 1/25 The Killers (Las Vegas) 2/12 Jack White 2/25 Father John Misty 3/6 Inhaler 4/10 Franz Ferdinand 4/17 Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds 5/15 Amyl & the Sniffers 5/18 Fontaines D.C. 9/1 Oasis
So many acts are gonna be jet lagged lol. And they prob couldnt get a permit to get any bonnaroo acts cause electric zoo is labor day weekend normally.

Ugh. Believe me, I'm not anti-science in the slightest, but Dr. Fauci's tendency to put out these rosy predictions is starting to wear on me. At one point, he was saying the general population could be getting vaccinated by April, and I think we can all agree, given the pace things are going, that might've been a bit pie-eyed.
He needs to learn about "wetness bias," the thing weather forecasts do to err on the side of predicting rain if things are iffy. Their rationale is that people will be more upset if they're told it's not going to rain and it does than vice versa. Give us the worst-case prediction so we can all be pleasantly surprised if it works out better than we thought, dude.

Haha I hear ya...all I can say to that is the world has been all doom and gloom for almost a full year and a reprieve with some optimism and hope every once in a while is nice
I'd love to feel optimistic about this but, given everything that's been happening, just can't see this happening in September. I may be wrong but I don't think it's so much about how much vaccination we have by Sep but, more importantly, what those PROJECTIONS are looking like in April-May. There will need to be a contingency plan put into place in the event that we're not pacing accordingly.

100% agree...and I hope that they wouldnt fly into planning a festival without a contingency

I would so love to be a fly on the wall for the booking process around a 2021 festival. Will there be fewer international acts due to travel restrictions? What stipulations are being put into artist contracts due to the fact that the entire festival's cancellation is on the table? What contingencies are in place if an artist or a member of their crew tests positive for the virus or has a confirmed exposure fewer than 14 days out from the dates?
There are so many possible wrinkles, I have to imagine negotiations this year are really complex.
The cancellation clauses are going to be insane though I hope both promoters and artists understand everyone is going to take a big of haircut since there's no telling how things will be. Based on the way things are going here in NYC, I don't see us vaccinating our own population by Sep nonetheless accounting for people who would like to travel here for an event like Gov Ball. I hope I'll eat my words but I think the 2022 predictions are becoming more and more true as the days drag on.

Same situation here in Texas (no surprise there though right). The health care staffs are not immediately jumping to get their jabs. It seems like a 50/50 split so far.
If Governors Ball is going through with this, I think it would be really smart to continuously promote getting a vaccine throughout their 2021 campaign. As I mentioned in the Coachella thread - make a discount/giveaway/promotion directed solely at their attendees receiving the shot. Taking that stand will effectively show they want safety, build immunity amongst their base...
And most importantly in my mind? Turn off those individuals who are skeptical and anti-vaxxers. Who wants them there anyway, right?
