If Coachella isn't happening due to concerns about large scale events in California, I can't see NYC somehow allowing events. There is a huge political risk (for lack of a better term) to give the go-ahead for stuff like this given what the city went through last spring but I'll try to stay positive.
Cuomo announced today that they're allowing 20% occupancy at baseball stadiums starting April 1st, with proof of vaccination or a negative PCR/antigen test. That's almost 6 months before the GovBall dates. I know a baseball home stand and a three-day festival are different animals, but it seems like the state is really into the idea of getting live events, particularly if they're outdoors, happening, and if it's happening at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, the city seems at least somewhat on board.
I can't see that changing by late September unless things get demonstrably worse from a pandemic standpoint. If we're in the same or a better place by September, I think this is going down. It could be - and I hope this is the case - that proof of vaccination or negative testing will be required for entry. The biggest hurdle might be if they can do it at full capacity, or if Founders would even want to do it at reduced capacity, given how much it might eat into profits.
I’d be willing to bet Tame Impala will still be one of the headliners. They’ll be in the US, having played Life Is Beautiful in Vegas the weekend before.
Also, I’d be kind of disappointed if we didn’t get one female headliner after they finally broke that ceiling with Florence in ‘19. Maybe Megan Thee Stallion gets what seems like GovBall’s annual “promote someone deserving to headliner status for the first time” slot?
Megan or Cardi would definitely get my partner to come so i would love one or both of them
I'll say it again, Dua Lipa would be a fantastic headliner for this festival. Future Nostalgia has stayed in the spotlight for nearly a year.
100%. Still cant believe how excellent that album is, I was not a huge fan of her past material but songs like Levitate, Pretty Please, etc are absolute bangers

Soooo, Firefly just announced their 2021 dates...the same weekend as GovBall. It's going to be really interesting how this all falls out if these festivals are able to happen

Looks like Japanese Breakfast could be in for this. Her new dates skip New York while touring the East Coast in September.
Not to burst that bubble, because I love JBrekkie, but she's playing Eugene, Oregon on 9/24 and Seattle on 9/25. She's off 9/26, but given that the next date is 9/27 in Vancouver, I doubt she's going to bounce back to the east coast for one night before continuing her pacific northwest swing.

Oh my bad, I thought these dates were earlier. It's hard to keep track with the fall ones this year!

I'm starting to feel like this festival is still REALLY a long shot given the recent MCR and RATM postponements.
I dunno. RATM was playing early August, and this festival is late September. Those two shows were indoor, and this is outdoor.
It’s still up in the air, for sure, but there are some material differences that make something like GovBall more viable than arena shows.
I understand the difference between outdoor and indoor events at this point but I'm not sure how the city would be able to justify allowing a 50k outdoor event in Sep when indoor arena gatherings of 10-15k aren't feasible. Most people don't understand the difference in transmission outdoors vs. indoors. Additionally, holding events like Gov Ball will encourage a lot of traveling to the area which could also be questionable with these new variants going around. Again, I hope I'm incorrect but it doesn't seem to be looking positive at this moment.

I hear you. A couple things that could help:
1) By the time GovBall rolls around, we’ll have lived for five months in a reality in which anyone in the US who wants to be vaccinated can be. What will that do to our numbers?
2) There is currently no evidence that any known variant escapes vaccine-generated immunity. There is in vitro reduction of antibody neutralization, but in every study, the virus has still been neutralized. This also doesn’t take into account cellular immunity, and all the studies I’ve seen have indicated that T cells generated by all the vaccines recognize and react to all the known variants.
3) One thing that would help would be if they required proof of vaccination or a negative test for entry. The beginnings of the infrastructure to support something like this are already in place. If the piloting of it being done bears out over the next few months, I could see it being applied to a larger event like GovBall.
Of course, there’s also the possibility/likelihood that the antivaxxers are going to screw us all. I don’t know. Maybe it’s a long shot to happen, and you could totally be right. We just have to see how this all plays out.
It definitely feels like things are still iffy. You would think that either Govball or Firefly would want to gain the upper hand with a lineup release, but so far nothing. If neither pump out a lineup this week, it seems pretty certain that they're both hesitating a drop because they're unsure they can put a festival on this fall
Big Freedia is touring with Too Many Zooz and has an east coast run with no NYC show and open dates 9/26 and 9/27 between Boston and Philly. Nothing huge but Freedia is a fun lower undercard act.

I saw Big Freedia open for LCD once and that was hilarious, so many fucking 30-something hipsters standing around confused

Riot fest is scheduled to happen the week before both of them and announced last week that their lineup is coming sometime in May. Same with DWP fest Louder Than Life. If we get to the end of May with no lineups then I’d say it’s time to worry.
