Getting whiplash from all this pivoting. I was considering doing GovBall for the first time in 2020 solely because of the changes and they basically said, “uh no. We’re fine with teen$. Book that Eyelash girl and the Post fella, they love them.”
Jokes aside this is a solid lineup, just not for me. (Still gutted that corona robbed us of a Missy Elliott set 😭)
Can someone ask the old lady from Egypt what she thinks of Lana Del Rey headlining Coachella so we can know whether the festival has redeemed its reputation as a laughingstock worldwide
11/28 Raveonettes (Copenhagen, Denmark) 12/4 Interpol 12/14 LCD Soundsystem 12/31 Billy Joel 1/25 The Killers (Las Vegas) 2/12 Jack White 2/25 Father John Misty 3/6 Inhaler 4/10 Franz Ferdinand 4/17 Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds 5/15 Amyl & the Sniffers 5/18 Fontaines D.C. 9/1 Oasis
Z100 would have Harry Styles in the mix... Actually, swapping in Harry for Saturday or Sunday's headliners would make this much better, lol. (I know he's playing MSG).

Just came here to say that this lineup--although there are some decent bookings (Billie, Phoebe, Megan, Big Thief, Bachelor, Freddie Gibbs)--is so, so underwhelming
- Is this actually at Citi Field inside or in the parking lot? I'm assuming the parking lot (similar to Meadows festival) - Big Thief, Leon Bridges and Jamie XX are true WTF bookings, though I guess Jamie XX would make a little more sense. Big Thief/Leon Bridges crowd will be sparse - Wish they would tilt the days a little heavier in one direction so the vomit teens could have one day the rest of us could avoid but I guess that wouldn't help drive 3 day sales - Wonder what the rationale was for removing the age restriction? I'm assuming the fear that it wouldn't sell out but, still, yikes.
Because I'm festival starved and the rarity of Jamie xx I think i'm in for sunday. Could easily make a day out of it with 100 gecs, Kota, Smino, Dom Fike, CRJ and young thug and just leave early. Maybe catch an aftershow
A little underwhelming across Friday and Saturday for me, but Sunday is super stacked and is gonna have some tough tough conflicts. Bachelor > UMI > Kota > Nokia > Smino > Dominic > Jamie > Carly > Burna Boy > Thugger > 21. Might have to make the trek out there for the day but the move to Citi for a year is kind of a bummer
I think this sells out like others have mentioned then moves back to Randalls/18+ for 2022 with a more 2020-like, if slightly more hip-hop and pop leaning, lineup booked
Friday is the most bang for my buck. Billie is the only headliner I’m interested in. As far as the undercard, Leon Bridges, Portugal The Man, Freddie Gibbs & Alchemist, Orville Peck, Dababy and Earth Gang.
there’s some good stuff on that lineup but tbh my main thought is that I find the font choice on that poster incredibly boring.
Wait you mean Knockout, the font that was specifically designed for posters and to have insanely subtle variations between weights, is not a unique and interesting choice for this lineup poster?

I really wonder about this. That would make three big pivots in a row, counting the one they tried to do in 2020 with the age restriction and that (beautiful, beautiful) lineup. I'm not sure it'd make sense for them to swing back in the other direction, again. It could be that they've just accepted that teens are where their bread is buttered, financially, and will lean into it from here on.

I think this lineup is very similar in spirit to 2018 personally

Rolling Loud not having a 2021 NY edition may have played a role in how this was booked as they now get to take advantage of an audience they lost who's looking for a local festival with good/relevant hip hop to attend: all the "subs" are rappers, and I can't recall the last time I saw that happen on a Gov ball lineup. This year's edition of GB is more along the vein of Meadows.
I think they sell this one out, get their money, and come back in June 2022 as an 18+ fest with some room to breathe in terms of booking another 2020ish lineup towards the demo. They clearly know the feelings towards the fuckery kids bring along with them through survey feedback and the 2019 Reddit AMA aftermath, otherwise they never would've implemented the 2020 change.
Tbh I’m surprised about people mentioning how much hip hop there is. I can name like 2 big rock albums that fit the festival demo over the last year or two. Even the underground scene has been pretty dry. I’d rather have 21 than Cold War Kids or something like that playing festivals in 2021

If they still have day passes I would consider the day with portugal the man and leon bridges. I've had fun at this fest in the past but it definitely got overloaded with wasted 14 year olds which hampered things a bit.

Theyre selling single day passes right now on their website. $129. You just need the first 6 digits of a citi card to access. I dont think theyre gonna force you to use a citi card unlike TM does. They even accept Paypal. Try 542418
True and you're right @ KPO. Unless you're booking The 1975 or Bon Iver or Kacey Musgraves or VW to sub, having a YYYs or a Cage the Elephant in those slots doesn't really work for the GB crowd or their bottom line. There are some nice lower line type rock acts who've dropped in the past few months but again you're right imo, they're fewer and farther between. I think more than anything, the hip hop sticker shock is an initial reaction off the top 7 names (6 of 7, or 5 of 7, depending on how you view Posty) on the poster being hip hop, perhaps because we've grown so accustomed to the typical Rap • Pop • Rock formula (I know I have.) It's a quality mix of genres, as GB usually is
I’m shocked at how many acts on this lineup I like, but how it’s still so bad...? Like, I could prob fill each day with decent stuff, but I don’t think I’d buy a ticket.

Rolling Loud has been teasing a NYC edition on social media recently. Not sure whether it’s for this year or next, but I’m gonna assume it’s the former.
11/19: Caribou 11/22: Ranger Trucco 11/29: Armand Van Helden* 1/16: L'Impératrice 1/30: Jamie xx 2/1: DJ Seinfeld 2/7: Mild Minds* 3/1: Father John Misty* 3/19: Confidence Man 3/23: DARKSIDE 5/8: Rüfüs Du Sol

I just scooped up a bunch of Friday day passes. Half because I want to go with some friends but also because I think the resale is going to be absolutely bonkers.
I think the pent up demand for live music + power of Billie + like every teenager begging mommy and daddy for the credit card and after a year inside feel like no ones going to be saying no.
I could be wrong - I’ve also gotten Meadows tickets for free/dirt cheap when the demand cratered a few years back - but I think it’s gonna sell out fast.

Can’t let those teens have any fun after a year of being locked at home during one of the most important social development times of their lives. Gotta be pretty spoiled for mommy and daddy to want to do something nice for you after that.
