I just love listening to people on Inforoo complain about teens being too wasted to function at fests when 70% of the time I’ve seen someone from this website at a show ..... they’ve been too wasted to function.
everyone on this board acting like they didn't get drunk at concerts when they were teenagers
I didn't drink when I was a teenager. Yay, me.
But, you're focusing in on one thing and kind of shooting wide of the point because of it. Other than, you know, hoping they don't actually hurt themselves, I don't really care if teenagers get drunk at a festival. It's when their drunkenness is coupled with the worst kind of entitled, obnoxious, vibe-killing behavior that it becomes an issue. Some kid passes out at 1:30 PM because he chugged his vodka before going through security, well, that kind of sucks for him, but c'est la vie. But that same kid and 15 of his friends in the same state bomb through the crowd at a stage without any regard for who they plow into or shove out of the way so they can get to the front, pausing occasionally to barf on a bystander, then camp there while drunkenly braying at the top of their lungs so they can hear each other over the artist on stage that the people who were standing there before they were hip-checked out of the way are trying to listen to...that's a lot more a thing, for me.
If you went to GovBall in 2018 or 2019 and can honestly say you don't know what any of us are complaining about, then I don't really know what to say to that other than that your tolerance for hordes of people acting like selfish pricks (yes, fueled a lot of the time by booze) is a lot higher than mine.

i mean you're describing what seems to me to be extremely common behavior for festivals of all kinds, featuring patrons of any age

I didn't experience this kind of thing at GovBalls 2014-2016, at Panoramas 2016-2018, or at Shaky Knees 2019. Go figure.
I mean, I'm not making this up. GovBall in recent years being described as "Not as bad as Lolla, but close" is something I heard a lot. Founders didn't pull the age restriction they were going to implement last year out of their asses for no reason.
I think there is a certain unseemliness for some people that fifteen and sixteen-year-olds are out there getting black-out drunk at a festival. But the last time I went to gov ball, one of my friends got so drunk we lost him at like 6PM and only found him at midnight in midtown, so I am certainly not going to judge.

I feel like it’s forgotten that 18+ was a direct response to Sunday of Govball 2019. The storm was coming and the fest was being evacuated (sloppily) - meanwhile the crowd by Sheck Wes/Death Grips refused to accept it, destroying the art installations with their cooped up litness instead of leaving. The AMA had 100+ complaints about teenagers that the GovBall team responded to one by one. 2020’s cancelled lineup seemed to fit right into the “we are booking older” narrative, so to see that pivot abandoned entirely was surprising. Hoping the GB team does an AMA soon, they’ve always been pretty transparent.
I attended Gov Ball 2017 on Sunday and don’t remember teenagers bothering me. That being said, most of the sets I saw were of older bands. Tool, Air, The Avalanches and Franz Ferdinand. But I also caught Parquet Courts, Warpaint and Logic and didn’t run into any trouble. Side note, I was also tripping balls and was in my own world. So maybe just disregard everything I just said.
Please don't take this personal, but the asshole crowds at festivals would say the same thing.
ah yes. Me not caring about how other people enjoy themselves means I must be an ass hole.
No, but certain conduct is simply incompatible with a collective music experience, and infringes upon the enjoyment of others who invested a ton of time, money, and anticipation into it.

Sunday of GovBall 2017 is kind of a linchpin moment in this whole story. The festival booked Tool for what was at the time of the announcement their first east coast show in, like, a decade (although they soon got scooped by Boston Calling), then loaded up their day with other acts that seemed like they'd appeal to the kind of older, rock-focused audience that they figured Tool would draw.
The day ended up waaaaaay undersold. On the whole, the kids stayed away and/or congregated at the few younger-skewing acts like Logic. A lot of Tool fans, knowing the festival's reputation (based on what was being said on Tool reddit, anyway), opted instead to attend other stops on the tour, like Rochester. GovBall's organizers have said in AMAs in the past that the underperformance of that particular day had an impact on their booking philosophy moving forward.
So, yeah...you're right. That day, in particular, it was possible to see a lot of great acts without encountering the hordes of shitty teenagers, because it was booked a certain way and drew a certain, relatively small crowd. Things changed after that.

I'm flummoxed by the fact that this seems to be a controversial idea.

To be fair, I don't think it's an issue of people being drunk/intoxicated as that happens at basically every show in every city in the world (unless you're seeing, like, Celine Dion possibly). The problem many of us have is the sheer scale of youngsters falling on their faces at 3pm and essentially just treating the festival site/music as a secondary attraction to the giant party.

never been to Bonnaroo eh?
Most of the years I went, from 2010-2016, didn't have the issues that gov ball did in the later years. I can't speak for recently though

I just don’t get how this is an issue. Me and my friends go “look at that dumb ass young whipper snapper high off his ass. Remember those days?”
And continue to walk to the set we were going to. Now if I’m enjoying a set and they throw up on my shoe I’ll get mad but more often than not they are out of sight, out of mind.

Good point! This totally makes sense.
I'm trying to find this AMA (anyone have any links?) but I remember this question about the Tool date not selling out and it saying it gave them pause. Slight clarification to the above is that it was their first area appearance since 2012 which, was a fairly big deal though they still didn't have any new material out.
