A true surprise! The first act that nobody had on their Bingo cards.
Surprised by this. I saw them pop up in this thread several times over the years. I know they’re controversial, but I figured they’d have made at least one list. Although the radio stations seemed to milk them for a year or two and then drop them - I personally totally forgot about them while thinking they’d have been a fun add a year ago.

Yeah I feel like this is a “too late” booking for me. They lost my interest after a while. Maybe it’ll come back.
Gotta do the donation post on this one because it's so cool and relevant to my work!
"Newport Festivals Foundation has made a donation on behalf of Rainbow Kitten Surprise to Stecoah Valley Center to help preserve, protect and promote Southern Appalachian mountain culture. Funds will provide musical instruction and instruments for their Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) program that provides free music instruction to students 4th - 12th grades interested in learning how to play guitar, fiddle, banjo, and other bluegrass instruments. Roger Waters 7/28 in Boston. Hate that it’s so close! Probably won’t be able to go! But it does eliminate him likely.
Well...maybe outside shot for Sunday as guest
I can see a cameo on Friday or maybe Sunday. His last visit, I believe he was in Milwaukee the night before.
This is silly speculation on my part but is it possible he knew who's headlining and booked his tour around that? Or maybe saw what If I Had A Song was last year and wanted to be a part of a set like that?

I think the more bizarre booking is DC - OH - NYC. It doesn’t seem like he’s booking around us.

Do you think RKS will close the Quad similar to Portugal the Man? Looks like they have pretty high placement on festival lineups. Could also see pre-headline at Quad

I think they will fill that exact PtM spot (unless NFF really pulls out some huge names this year)

You guys put RKS and PTM in the same popularity conversation? Or just same in terms of style?

He works his way back east from Ohio after playing there on the 1st...I do think it makes sense, especially since that would give him 2 days off he he comes up to Newport before playing new york

More style I guess. Obviously RKS doesn't have a Feel It Still yet, but they were relatively high on the Hangout lineup and the same level as Isbell on the Innings lineup
I am also underwhelmed by this booking. I was thinking the contrarary though, that RKS will push people to the other acts.
College kids fucking love this band.
I’m out of the loop, I guess (and definitely not a college student) cause I’ve never heard of them before. They sounded fun but in kind of an unengaging, less sardonic Modest Mouse, sort of way. They’d be fun to hear while having some drinks but definitely wouldn’t go out of my way for them. I’m mostly surprised that for a band name as bombastic as Rainbow Kitten Surprise, I’ve never caught wind of them before.
They were fun when I caught them at Boston Calling but I don't think I've ever listened to them outside of that and would probably skip their set at Newport
Not a bad booking at all though. They're for sure a bit corny but not any worse than current Head and the Heart or Edward Sharpe or whatever

Nail meet head. It's weird to see people saying this is a weird booking in the same thread people are in love with the bands you mentioned. At least RKS doesn't seem to take themselves too seriously like the 2 groups you brought up
New Stephen Malkmus from a record he made with Chris Funk. Chris is playing with him on tour too. Seems like a solid chance and a booking I'd love to see.
EDIT: Just wanna add that this song is killer. Exactly the kind of stuff I've been wanting more of at Newport

Oh helllll yes. Please.
Semi-related, and something I've been thinking of since David Berman's tragic departure - I would love a Silver Jews/Purple Mountains tribute set at some point. To avoid the appearance of cashing in on a tragedy, maybe Newport would be a good outlet? I know Mike Taylor is a big fan, if Malkmus is a possibility there could be a bunch of NFF newbies and alum to make up the band.

Also touring with Qais Essar. Played the museum a couple years ago.

Qais is also going to be part of the ensemble. So yeah this is looking promising.
I guess I didn't realize how popular PtM is. 8m monthly listens on Spotify, YEESH! For reference, RKS is just under 2m - not too shabby themselves.
I say quad before big thief with big thief having Lukas Nelson’s slot on the quad this year.
On one hand I’d love to see Newport put Big Thief on the Fort but on the other I think the energy at the Quad could be better for a band like them. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them get the Courtney Barnett treatment though

Bob Boilen and Evan Stephens Hall (of Pinegrove) talk about me and my dog in the latest episode of NPR's All Song Considered. I've peaked. I'm done. RIP me.
