For my Long Island and Deer Tick friends I just found today this AME Mayday festival in Suffolk County, NY. It's 5/9/20. Deer Tick along with Spin Doctors, Justin Townes Earle, Dave Hause and Sahara Moon. Date isn't on DT's site yet so I think it's fairly new info. Tickets go on sale 2/7.

Oh damn, that's just a half hour from me. Awesome, thanks for the heads up.
Newport related story: A few years ago during the Hopscotch festival in Raleigh, Phil Cook played a free day show at a small LGBTQ+ safe space bar, just him solo as he frequently does around the Triangle. He said he was gonna try something new and was curious how long it would take people to get it. He then proceeded to play 5 or 6 super deep Randy Newman cuts, all interpreted through his signature open tuned guitar. It was around song 3 that someone was like "are these all Randy fucking Newman?" which received a "hell yea brother" from Phil.
Also, speaking of Randy, and Newport’s interest in adding more “spoken word”... I’d enjoy the hell out of a set by Rex Orange County at Newport
Been saying this is more of a fusion year. Randy, RKS, EOB, maybe Sharon van Ettan. Knowing how they often take a few performers from the year before at Lincoln Center, would not be surprised to see Blood Orange...first time I know they ever closed off entry at Lincoln Center so early before a show.
I’m not anti-dead by any means, although I’m not a huge fan. I regret not seeing them here on the west coast when they came to my town a few years ago. But i always wonder if Newport the right venue for true Jam-bands, as the short sets don’t really lend themselves to extended noodling.
Seems like they got around it with the MMJ-Roger Waters “superset” in 2015. We weren’t there last year so I didn’t see Phil Leah, Warren Haynes, etc...do people feel like you get the whole experience with an hour and fifteen minute set?

I don't mind them booking jam stuff but idk how well the Dead works/worked as a headliner. There are just so many better ways to see their music performed these days than a short set from Phil Lesh at Newport. I think bookings like Trey Anastasio, Robert Hunter, or Warren Haynes give representation to the genre while fitting it more to Newport's logistics and vibe.
Do Tedeschi Trucks count as a "true Jam-band"? That's the only major one I'd really like to see them book. Have they played Folk or only Jazz Fest?
I also wouldn't be mad to see them play around with the occasional longer set time. There's instances where I'd take one less artist if it meant the headliner could do 2 hours

And neither MMJ or Roger are jam bands
Yeah TTB is def Jam band. Plenty of festivals book these bands for “festival sets” and it works. I don’t understand why it wouldn’t work at Newport.
Toubab-Krew, now that's a jam band. I catch TTB every year at the Beacon. They have as many short songs as they do jams, with some wonderful numbers written by their singer Mike Mattison (Midnight in Harlem; Get What You Deserve). They played a two-hour set at Newport Jazz in 2015. But they are at Red Rocks Friday and Saturday, and the outfit is too large to move to Newport. Susan, btw, has sung at NFF.
Not a HUGE Dead fan, but Dead and Company with John Mayer puts on a heck of a show. Maggie Rogers sat in at MSG this year. I hope there is not a bunch of complaining if they appear.
Which brings me to a question. If Roger Waters was holy shitz. And James Taylor and Kermit and Dolly were even bigger holy shitz. And Patti Smith was, ok, didn't see that coming...
Casting aside Bruce and Neil young...anyone have predictions (not who you want...but predictions) for (1) some wow! holy shitz announcement or surprise; and (2) a wtf are they doing here, but OK! Thoughts?
I think I know one, so moving on, I'm going to toss out: Elton John (for holy shitz) ; Taylor Swift in just jeans, sneakers and a guitar(unannounced); and Joan Jett as slightly out of the box.

Randy Newman would a pretty wild booking, but I don't know if that will happen any time soon

Ehhh I predicted Newman a couple years ago whenever his most recent album came out. Seems well-within their ouevre
Cheech & Chong might be the most surprising Newport announced booking since I started going.
Made a clashfinder mock schedule ahead of the fest and actual schedule release, follow along as i update after every act is announced and let me know if you'd change anything:
Saw a claim that Michael Kiwanuka was the grandson or Uganda's first prime minister and did some digging. Benedicto Kiwanuka was murdered (horrifically) under the regime of Idi Amin.
Benedicto Kagimu Mugumba Kiwanuka (8 May 1922 – 22 September 1972) was the first prime minister of Uganda, a leader of the Democratic Party, and one of the persons that led the country in the transition between colonial British rule and independence. He was murdered by Idi Amin's regime in 1972. Kiwanuka was imprisoned in 1969 by Obote's government, but was one of 55 political detainees released by Idi Amin immediately after the coup that brought Amin to power. Amin appointed him as chief justice of Uganda on 27 June 1971. Kiwanuka soon came into confrontation with Amin's disregard for the rule of law. In the immediate aftermath of Obote's abortive counter coup of 1972, Kiwanuka was arrested at gunpoint by Amin's men as he presided over a session of the High Court. Michael's family are very private and don't talk about this part of their past. What is true is that Michael's family were forced out of Uganda by the Amin regime.
observer.ug/special-editions/46572-why-michael-kiwanuka-is-not-famous-in-uganda Very little is known about Michael Kiwanuka’s family apart from the fact that his parents fled Uganda during Idi Amin’s regime. According to The Telegraph, one of them was an electronic engineer while the other was a cleaner. Whether the two were related to Uganda’s Amin-era tragic Prime Minister Benedicto Kiwanuka is not known, as the artist remains fiercely secretive about his personal like.
If Michael is one of Benedicto's grandsons he wouldn't be the only one of his grandsons to achieve great things. Mathias Kagimu Kiwanuka is a former American football defensive end. He was originally drafted 32nd overall in the 2006 NFL draft. He played college football at Boston College. He earned two Super Bowl rings with the Giants in Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLVI, beating the New England Patriots twice. Mathias is the grandson of Benedicto Kiwanuka, the first Prime Minister of Uganda. He is the younger brother of Mary Kiwanuka, a federal government attorney.
