Has anyone here ever been to Moon River Music Festival? I think I'm going to try to do both that and Newport this year. Seems like they have similar vibes and music.
so far so good, definitely some great, solids acts (big thief, mando, yola) and some inspired bookings (eob, randy) but i gotta admit it hasnt quite grabbed my full attention yet. perhaps we get a big name on thursday?
also i feel like there's been a bit less wish listing this year than past, so while we're at it, i'm gonna put the following into the universe: - the national - justin xerxes fussell - vampire weekend - frank turner (he's doing a special new tour, co headlining with his new wife jessica guise, would be great for nff. also he's gotta be my #1 requested late night show guest...) - strand of oaks - more langhorne slim (fort stage plz and thank you) - delta spirit - THE MOUNTAIN GOATS - pearl jam (why not) - sir woman

I've been before. I'd say it was more easy going than Newport. You've got 2 stages(I think, might be a smaller 3rd one) with very little overlap. Outdoor activities too(Rock climbing wall, kayaking on the Tennessee River). No seated areas for stages, but you can put blankets down beyond soundboard. Limited area to get adult beverages, but you can carry them throughout the festival. A separate bar area where they have TVs for football games as well. Overall it was a pretty good experience. We stayed at an Air bnb, it was in a questionable neighborhood, but Uber/Lyft to/from the festival wasn't an issue(I can't remember if they would drop you off on the festival side of the river or not). There is a free electric bus loop downtown that will get you close to the bridge as well and you can walk across to the festival grounds / park.

I'm putting Spoon on my wish list. They are long overdue to play, and with Britt working on Nicole Atkins' new album, maybe that increase their chances

Just saw that Live from Here with Chris Thile doing a pre-show at Moon River. Maybe that's how it would make an appearance at Newport as an after show or on All Newport's Eve. Seems like would be more suited to Pickens than Newport Blues Cafe though.

I’ve been shocked this hasn’t happened yet. I was figuring this was coming one day back when it was still A Prairie Home Companion.

Currently diving down an Another Sky YouTube rabbit hole. Just discovered them today on Tiny Desk. They would be a great Newport act in the next year or two.
i know last year wasnt official but this will technically be 3 years in a row. that being said, i missed them in '18 to see low cut connie and '19 it was tough to get neaer acoustic pop up and impossibleto get tickets to that special mini show, so i still dig this booking

"Newport Festivals Foundation has made a donation on Caamp's behalf to Sam's Fans. This donation will go directly to provide joy and comfort to seriously ill kids through the amazing vehicle of music and art therapies. That could be by way of donating music and art supplies to our partner hospitals or education through scholarship funds for Music Therapy Students at Ohio University."
Newport Jazz's early schedule reminds me how long its been-- like, when they were in New York, and George Wein was jamming. I almost could swap my weekends if I hadn't done so much planning already in advance. Was listening to Christian McBride yesterday for the longest time thinking how innovative and affirming he is.
That said, as much as this looks like a strong NFF, I feel a little too much deja vu. So much new, sometimes raw, talent out there is starting to get lost among the same friends. CAAMP, great; Jospeh, wonderful...but...who is next? Lone Bellow and Milk Carton Kids? I was happy to see Yola announced because she is so new and I missed her performance last year, but I'm ready to meet more unknowns that cause me to research, like I did with Yola last year, or more established acts who just haven't been around the past 7 or 8 years. On the other hand, familiarity brings comfort. Goes both ways.

Agreed, I don't have a problem with Joseph or CAAMP, but they don't drum up too much excitement for me. Since we had back-to-back Folk alumni announcements, I'm guessing next week will have some fresher faces.
I would give anything to see Bright Eyes play Newport with Phoebe Bridgers showing up as guest and a special performance of this song with Matt from The National.
