Brittany Howard Montreal August 1. No other dates around the area. She's also got some June dates with Vagabon.
Brittany seems like such a given, I can't imagine her not showing up.
Anyone recall postings from last year that highlighted one or more "punk folk" bands? I recall really liking several, but can't recall names or songs -- or where I parked my car last night. New band suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Frank Turner, Corey Branan, Butch Walker, Vandoliers(maybe), Chuck Ragan, Flogging Molly(maybe), Lucero, Gallows Bound, Old 97's(maybe). From who I can think of I might consider along those lines. Don't remember from last year.

I wouldn't really say "folk-punk" but lately I've been listening to a lot of punk and post-punk bands like Parquet Courts, Idles, Savages, Shame, Free Throw, The Front Bottoms, Pup...
You could maybe consider The Front Bottoms folk-punk.
Bands like Parquet Courts and Idles would really fit at Newport idealistically but Parquet Courts would also fit sonically. Idles might be a bit too heavy but then again they were supposed to play a toned down Tiny Desk (They ended up changing their minds and playing closer to a normal set but at least they've shown interest in playing more stripped back versions of their songs.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

It’s interesting you mention that about The Front Bottoms. I had suggested Jeff Rosenstock, but upon going back to listen, I was like “this is a lot more punk than I remember.” But I think both artists are similar in that they play into a form of lyrical punk. Where they tell stories through their lyrics and words. With hints of protest. So in that regard, there is an overlap with folk. But if folk is about instrumentation, then neither of these acts would work. That said, as NFF pushes out into spoken word and soul, I have no issue adding in some lyrical punk type artists to consideration.
Very happy about this one. Have been listening to his new album over the past week and it is great. That being said, am missing the new artist exploration/discovery that Newport typically brings.
Speaking of front bottoms, I stood behind the lead singer during the pinegrove set two years ago, so he’s a fan of the fort. Would love to see them tho It’s admittedly a stretch

Don’t think I saw anyone say AJJ in response to this, they’re a favorite of mine and I’d love to see them at the fort.

I should have mentioned them as they've been in heavy rotation lately too. I discovered them through Regina Spektor as weird as that sounds. I was on her Wikipedia page once and her genre was listed as "anti-folk" and I had no idea what that meant and when I searched Anti-folk artists AJJ was the number one band that came up in the results.

I've heard of Rosenstock but never listened (Just slowly getting back into punk after many years of not listening). I just listened to a couple songs and they were great so thanks for the recommendation. Two songs is admittedly a small sample size but based on those songs I think he could fit at Newport.

Attaching this again but here is the Clashfinder I’ve built for this year. Just added Nathaniel Rateliff so we are up to date. Let me know what I got right/wrong: clashfinder.com/m/newportfolkfest2020/?user=Andyd17

I think Randy Newman is too big of a name to close out the Harbor. I'd put him in the Graham Nash Quad spot I think.

appreciate you putting this together.
i am a bit skeptical of the vagabon spot. last two years teh saturday quad opener was a rocker (low cut connie, illiterate light) and Jay even mentioned on a podcast last year he likes putting a heavy act there (his "piss & vinegar" postioning, i believe he called it). wonder who might fit there this year (if he goes same route, i doubt its anyone announced yet).
speaking of IL. saw them in brooklyn a few weeks ago and they are on another level right now. someone on a NFF FB group said he saw them elsewhere and heavily alluded to them having a presence at the fort this year. i know their is hesitancy towards more and more repeats but theyd be great, even if its just an aftershow.

Seeing PUP tonight! And again on Saturday. They'd never work at Newport, but there is two or three videos of them playing acoustic versions of their songs on YouTube, under their original name, Topanga.

I could see the Nathaniel playing an intimate new album set or closing down the whole fest joined by a rotation of incredible guests. Could go either way and both would be unforgettable.

Eh, kinda leaning more for the Jeff Tweedy spot. The closer will probably be something collaborative or (my hope) a collaborative deer tick set

I’d put Randy slightly earlier in the day so he could close out the Family Tent
Beach Road Weekend Festival (weekend before NFF) is announcing right now. Lotta folk alum (and hopefuls) at it too. Martha’s Vineyard.
That's a really nice lineup, but is it really a good idea to do a festival one week and 37 miles away from Newport that's designed to appeal to the exact same audience? Sure, people who live very close will go because it's in their backyard, but are a lot of people who've already booked hotels and bought tickets to Newport going to double down and do the two festivals a week apart?
Conversely, are people who like the Newport lineups, but never go for one reason or another, going to consider the trek to Martha's Vineyard or the cost any easier than doing Newport? I checked out the ferry options once I heard about this and with a Boston Harbor to Woods Hole ferry, followed by a Woods Hole to MV ferry (which, strangely, takes five minutes longer than the ferry from Boston), the door-to-door travel time for me would be around three hours each way. I want to do that about as much as I want to be out my door at 6:30 am just to be absolutely sure that I get to Berklee in time to catch an 8 am bus to NFF...which is to say, not at all.
It would be a much better idea to run this lineup in Martha's Vineyard no later than mid-June. Putting a month and half or more between the festivals increases the likelihood that you sell tickets to people who are already going to Newport and would prefer to space their summer getaway weekends apart. Maybe some people who can't get away for a festival in late July/early Aug, due to work or whatever, could do an early or mid-June festival. It just seems like common sense to not run an Americana lineup that close, in time and distance, to Newport.

The summer population of the Vineyard can swell up to between 50,000-100,000. This festival is probably thinking that they’ll make most of their ticket sales off of people that will already be there on the island. I agree that, that at least for festival goers and having more options, an earlier date would make it more appealing as a possible alternate/addition for NFF goers.
I gotta say, that Beach road weekend lineup looks fantastic. Coming from someone that’s been to Newport 6 of the last 7 years and now finds themselves on Lyte in the 600’s I think it’s a quality alternative. If I wasn’t such a huge Deer Tick fan expecting something special, I’d be changing my summer plans. As for Deer Tick I’d love to see them headline with guests but I’ll take a pre headline slot and then they stay on as the backing band for Stevie Nicks.
