Thanks for the bazillion recommendations. Some really eclectic tastes for people I had pegged as preferring blue grass/folk/country/indie pop. Good music is good music. Some fit on some stages better than others.
I know some of the bands, such as Dropkick Murphys, Old 97's (more rock?), Lucero, and Frank Turner, who really fits (has the name of an old Mississippi bluesman). Having frequented CBGB's back in the day, some of the bands might have been better suited there, or at the Rebellion Festival than Newport, but who's to say. I still have to find the stuff from last year, which was truly folk with attitude. But some new additions to my playlists now include AJJ (I see them at the Fort). The Vandolliers. Rosenstock. PUP. The Idles. Gallows Bound. River City Extension!
I might add a couple -- Robber's Roost and Days 'n Dazes that I would call punk folk. Would looooove to see a President of the United States of Am. reunion at Newport. Keep the sharing going. "Movin' to the country / gonna eat a lot of peaches..."

Sort of Flight of the Conchords 2020: Kitty, Kitty, Kitty, Kitty.
When you consider the fact that Newport sells out in seconds with no lineup, I think Beach Road makes perfect sense. Capitalize on excess demand for folk music in the area and the masses of tourists already there. If I couldn't make it to Newport for whatever reason, this is easily the best alternative.

I agree. I think it’s a great play by this festival. Although it doesn’t sell out in seconds...but I get the point haha.
Newport Folk Fest @newportfolkfest · Feb 22 Some say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... Truth be told we’d advise taking your own path. It’s how legends are forged and communities formed. You can’t manufacture it. Trust us on this one
I assume they are unhappy with Martha's Vineyard for some reason. This tweet is really bizarre and out of character.

Yeah that’s not a good look on Newport if that’s what it’s about. Sounds very bitter.

yikes, newps with the claws, very strange. maybe they are just warming us up to a rage against the machine headliner? (very much kidding).
in all honesty: not a good look to speak down to competition.

Looks like Luther Dickinson, Birds of Chicago, Amy Helm and Grahame Lesh have a show announced together under the name of “Capitol Sun Rays”
That’d be a cool get!
Saw them open for Tedeschi Trucks last year at the Beacon -- outstanding! There are a couple of homemade videos up...don't judge by them as they fail to capture the sound and nuance of these folks.
Btw-- as I look at al these concert posters, is there a show Head and the Heart is not playing?

Seemed a bit of a mild jab considering that festival is kind of undercutting Newport. Putting it the week before Newport seems a bit intentional and obvious. It's got to hard enough to get talent to Newport given its size and budget without a similar festival popping up in the same general place and time of year. I agree that more choice is good but at least have it a month apart. I wonder if it'll reduce demand for Newport next year if they keep it at same week. I'll try to be optimistic about it but if it start taking acts from Newport it's going to suck.

I think the Newport team is more concerned about a for-profit festival attempting to siphon attendees and money away from the non profit activities Newport supports.
Well, I've been asking for folk-punk. Self-described, and elsewhere described, as just that. I don't hear it. Can't quite hear most of the lyrics, but I have a poor ear for southern accents. Excellent guitarist. I assume the Harbor Stage with a good draw.
House of Blues Boston show a day or two before Newport doesn’t necessarily rule an artist out, does it? If I remember, there’s always a handful of acts that play both. If so, Rex Orange County will be in the area.
That said, given Lollapalooza is the same weekend, I assume he’ll be making his way to Chicago at some point that weekend.
*An aside, it’ll be interesting to see if Newport helped itself or hurt itself by scheduling the same weekend as XPNFest, Osheaga, Lollapalooza, and Pickathon. I’m guessing the former, as it wouldn’t be impossible for an act to hit 3 of the 5 with good tour routing.
** Nevermind, Rex’s tour doesn’t list Osheaga, but he’ll be playing there on Friday. Seems weird to go Boston -> Osheaga -> Newport. More than likely he’ll head from Osheaga to Lollapalooza.

To all the Long Island peeps... Not sure if you noticed, but Jones Beach has The Black Keys, Gary Clark Jr, and Yola on Aug 26th!!! Pre-sale on now.
Thanks for the heads up.Problem is -- never happy with the seats I get for the price I pay, although can't beat the beach a walk away.
Other problem for me -- with NFF's rolling announcements, I never know whether to put money down, say, for Nathaniel Rateliff at Town Hall (glad I didn't), or this year at Jones Beach -- Black Crows; Black Keys; Gary Clark, Jr., even James Taylor, although that would be a long shot. Looking forward to the Lincoln Center out-of-doors announcements, late as they may be.

I completely agree about seats vs price. I bit and did the $140. Three friends, Jones Beach, and awesome music. YOLO even if you go broke doing it!
Looks like Norah is touring with Mavis and the tour lines up and end of July. Brooklyn 7/28. Probably Friday, if they were to show. Or maybe they both end up at Jazz.

Maybe we'll get to see SVE do Seventeen with Norah
