I’m in that weird headspace where I’m really excited for a BIG announcement but also terrified that it’ll only get my hopes up before NFF gets cancelled. Seriously though, I hope the artist announcements don’t stop anytime soon. I love this time of year, as it introduces me to so much good music I was unfamiliar with. Stay safe everyone.

At this point I have a hard time seeing a way that it doesn't get cancelled. While some aspects of life might be turning back to normal by then due to antiviral treatment options, it is unlikely that we will have a vaccine available and broadly distributed enough to allow for discretionary large scale events like concerts and sporting events. I completely agree that I would love for announcements to continue as that curation is a joyful part of the experience. I also think there is a space for a well produced virtual community offering to replace the festival this summer. If I were the foundation, I would be putting half of my efforts into preparations for something along those lines.
<adding caveat that I am just theorizing and there is obviously no way to be certain about the future. If I was a great prognosticator I would be doing better at Bingo.>
I think this is worth including too: "With everything going on right now, we've asked NFF to donate to a fund helping the Austin live music community impacted financially by COVID-19. We ask to please do your part in flattening the curve. Stay in, listen to music, read a book, and love your neighbor. Thanks and see you in July!"

Not sure if this one was shared yet - but Willie Nelson is hosting a live stream with a rotation of live acts tonight between 6-11 cst -- includes Lukas Nelson, Nate Rateliff, Margo Price, Lucinda Williams, David Rameriez and more - luckreunion.com/tilfurthernotice

I never use Instagram. Basically, Adam Weiner and one his guitarists sat in his living room or bedroom...it wasn't incredibly musical with the poor mix, but like a party that just made you happy. Like having your crazy neighbor, with all the mock shtick, and a few serious reflections, who likes to get into his underwear and play the piano. Sounded like family behind the camera. definitely recommend. I posted a note on the Newport Friends Facebook page...and it was streamed from there (they called it a Newport Friends Party).
Then touched the computer and suddenly there was Grace Potter playing a final song, sitting by a beautiful large window. I really could see the Newport Fest becoming, say, a two-day on-line fest, obviously no large bands...although musicians can jam from other sites. Gonna try that myself tomorrow if I can figure out one of the programs. Anyone know how that finally stuff works, let me know. Always ready to play.
It hasn't been included in the NPR list of live streaming events, or other lists I've run across, but one daily stream most people in this thread may want to know about is Amanda Shires, on her YouTube channel, every day at 6 eastern/3 pacific.
It's definitely her thing, but Jason's backing her up, there's a duet now and then (a lovely cover of Warren Zevon's Mutineer yesterday), and he sings lead on a cover or does an improvised blues jam each show. He covered Pancho and Lefty on Saturday.
Another couple (and their dog) are staying with them, and one of them, Seth Plemmons, also accompanies them on acoustic guitar.
Seth's dog Zeke makes frequent appearances, too.
Fear not, all previous shows are archived on her YouTube channel. (I have no idea why anyone is doing this anywhere other than YouTube. The sound quality is aces, people watching can enlarge to full screen, and you can actually watch this on a desktop or laptop, which you can't do with Instagram Live, unless you download a Chrome extension.)

Sounds like she's a lock, also makes me feel a bit better about Newport going ahead as scheduled. Fingers crossed. Willing to stay indoors all the way until then in order to be at the fort again with all you beautiful people
Barrie? You mean barre chords? Tull guitarist Martn Barre? Barry Manilow? No offense to them, their music seems pleasant enough, but I've been eating over ripe apples and all weekend waiting for today's announcement, and Barrie? Seems an odd booking. Reminds me of Aha or muzak rock...Oh well, I'd rather see them live than wonder what I missed.
Wonder if some names that were to be announced are under the covers right now in case of a cancellation. Thanks for the Josh Ritter reminder!
Don’t really have anything behind this thought, but was reading this and thought it was interesting that she was planing surprises this year, one of which was supposed to be Coachella. She mentions other surprises that she hopes to still plan this year....
Way outta left field thought, but many alumni were on her soundtrack and movie last year.
And also in Boston in August. But if there’s one place that loves “surprises” it’s this place.
A word of caution as festivals like Lollapalooza delay their lineup announcements.
Some artists might end up rescheduling summer tours to fall and in doing so, might have to cancel performances/festival dates that fit perfectly into their current tours, even if later in the summer. Given that Newport doesn’t pay much, they probably rely on a band being able to slot their Newport stop conveniently within a tour.
Artists in more at risk demographics (and less in need of tour revenue), like Randy Newman, might choose to postpone all dates this year even if this looks like it’ll be an issue into the summer.
Point being: be expecting lineup subtractions and additions as we get closer to the date.
This festival is 128 days away. No need to make decisions at this time.
I respectfully and fervently disagree. Four months out is when a lot of people will be booking flights and hotels and rental cars. The sooner those people know, the less of a headache it will be for everyone.
Right now we're being told to avoid groups as large as ten... I just don't see how a festival of ten thousand gets a go-ahead for July. Any event organisers who think COVID-19 will have blown over by then need to pull their heads out of their asses (looking at you, Lollapalooza).

I'm not going to predict the future. I don't know. But the majority of the festival happens in August which is a ways off. Newport is working with the authorities on this.
