Newport booked a folk band that features Paul Banks on vocals for a festival that probably won’t happen!? I just got really excited and really sad at the same time. But at least I now know this project exists.
Jay tweeted out a Newport playlist he made which included a Sylvan Esso with Collections of Colonies of Bees song. So maybe we will be seeing a Sylvan Esso announcement soon? I know somebody posted hoping one of their WITH shows would be on the lineup, that would be a great add and would make sense with today's announcement.

Also includes “coffee” which is a SE song. Yeah that’d be a great add. Also, WITH is being released as a video on YouTube tomorrow.

Hiss Golden Messenger is on Jay's playlist too!! Looks like today might be a 3-announcement day. I'm thinking they are going to get through the full line up this week and then next week share info on the fate of the fest.
ive gone from eager anticipation of announcements to solemn dread... it just keeps getting better and im gonna be still stuck in my apartment at the beginning of august instead of the fort...
If we also get Hiss today it makes me think Bon Iver is definitely the Saturday headliner/is the one who dropped out
Love seeing Sylvan Esso added, another Bonnaroo crossover though. This feels like the most they’ve had in a while
This is such a great lineup that I hope they find some way to make it happen at some point, even if it’s not this July
Bon iver didn’t cancel those dates yet though. I thought Jay said it was a band that canceled dates that were on the route.
I thought it was just something vague about rescheduled tour dates/festivals or something. I haven't kept up with who's cancelled what and what's been rescheduled, I'm just saying it looks like the Sat lineup is set up for a Bon Iver headliner spot4

I am so, so sad about this year's lineup. Not because it's bad. It's amazing. But, assuming this thing even happens at all, which I'd call doubtful, I won't be able to go, this year. Last year's lineup was decent, and I had fun, but this year is just squarely right up my alley in so many ways.
The only thing I can even remotely negatively say about this year’s lineup is that it seems to be a little weak at the top tier. After afternoon sets from Kacey Musgraves and Trey Anastasio, it seems to be missing that late day oomph. (These could have been the acts who were first to drop off given the arrival of coronavirus; those who really need to justify a stop mid-tour to offset the fact that they’re probably taking a paycut/loss by playing Newport.)
That said, you can tell that’s obviously offset by such a deep lineup of notable acts. This lineup reminds me of the early 2010 Newport lineups which I so loved. I’m super sad that either this will not be a thing or that I will likely not be able to attend. Especially if we get the one-two punch of Bon Iver and the National. This was a fantastic lineup during a very crowded weekend.

This is a tough show to unpack. Folk music aplenty, although a lot of new, unknown acts.. for me, at least -- and I would guess for many not on these threads. Yet there is a nice mix of some "comfort" acts that we have seen rather recently. I recall a few years back, 5or 6 now? -- when a performer strode out with his guitar and said, "this still is a folk festival. you know." No issues about that this year. And I think Sylvan Esso, The National, and a few others are certainly some of the more edgier "folk" acts we haven't seen as much in a few years.
Still, I suspect there have been several cancellations, or Newport may have requested some as a favor, should they have to deal with refunds, prepaid acts and insurance companies. It feels like fewer budget busters. A few less bands. Fewer, if any, obvious headliners for Friday and Saturday. I would guess The National closes Sunday...although there's usually something thematic. Besides -- am I the only one in this room who just can't get into them...especially the vocals. I could see them curating a closer...although there is usually a theme rather than a big name on Sunday.
As some have noted there are several performers with ties to each other, and Dan Auerbach / Black Keys seems a possible Saturday or unnamed act. Don't get me wrong -- looks like a good show, but smaller after last year's "crazy."
Missing -- Cannot recall year when there weren't a couple of bridges to the past legends ala Rambling Jack, Judy Collins, Jimmy Cliff. I've given up asking for Arlo. Don't expect Joan. Perhaps health playing a larger role this year? Please don't PM, but there are two, not one big acts, with out clauses, not listed here.
Elephant in the Room -- Not Cage the Elephant. If bands cancelled, why not fill the spots, even with "to be announced." Beyond the obvious cancellation. This is just me dreaming -- but is it possible that Jay is considering only two stages, making more room by dropping the crowded Harbor and Museum, spreading out the Quad, prohibiting the front crowding, roping off sections for seating, and combining some acts on Sunday? Just a hope that would buy us another month because I do want to see these acts I barely know.
And goodness, there is an exceptional jazz lineup being built for the following week.

Such a solid lineup. I'm not optimistic of this happening but would love to be wrong. My only hope is that we can eventually get most of these acts back as a full lineup when possible.

I’m not really sure that we have seen the top tier on a couple of these days. Great lineup nonetheless.

As for your point about “missing”, there’s Randy Newman. I’d also suspect that these artists would be the first to drop off given that they’re in the at risk demographic, don’t have as much to prove, and likely don’t need the money.
He probably did not fill these spots because he already knows the fate of the festival. At this point, it’s about thanking the acts that did join the Folk Family or choose an outlet for Newport to make a donation. Jay knows he’s not going to be booking any replacement acts, so why pretend?
I think if Newport was in May, we’d most definitely get some sort of virtual fest from them with proceeds going to the community. Most of these artists are playing living room sets already anyways (folk music lends itself well to these kind of stripped down lofi sets).
But given that the festival is late July, it’s hard to say. Will artists be back on the road by then? Will concerts be able to resume in the summer if not too large of a gathering? If some things have opened up by then (I.e., restaurants, bars, beaches, parks, Disney World), will we as consumers still be as hungry for low quality digital content?
