while i wont go so far as to say best lineup ive been to, its incredibly unique and solid. the national are my wife and i's favorite band and ive been hoping for this booking since we first went in '17.
at the moment im just kinda distraught, less so about the lineup and more about the prospects of going nearly 2 full years without a trip to the fort...
Missing -- Cannot recall year when there weren't a couple of bridges to the past legends ala Rambling Jack, Judy Collins, Jimmy Cliff. I've given up asking for Arlo. Don't expect Joan. Perhaps health playing a larger role this year? Please don't PM, but there are two, not one big acts, with out clauses, not listed here.
Elephant in the Room -- If bands cancelled, why not fill the spots, even with "to be announced." Beyond the obvious cancellation. This is just me dreaming -- but is it possible that Jay is considering only two stages, making more room by dropping the crowded Harbor and Museum, spreading out the Quad, prohibiting the front crowding, roping off sections for seating, and combining some acts on Sunday? Just a hope that would buy us another month because I do want to see these acts I barely know.
As for your point about “missing”, there’s Randy Newman. I’d also suspect that these artists would be the first to drop off given that they’re in the at risk demographic, don’t have as much to prove, and likely don’t need the money.
He probably did not fill these spots because he already knows the fate of the festival. At this point, it’s about thanking the acts that did join the Folk Family or choose an outlet for Newport to make a donation. Jay knows he’s not going to be booking any replacement acts, so why pretend?
I think you missed my point. I was trying to answer my own question re missing sets with a pipe-dream of spreading out the the fest to make it work with only two stages, thus a lot more social distancing. Good chance RI and the park will be open come late July - August, with social distancing among large crowds still an issue. But Sunday's schedule currently has too many acts. I take issue that Randy Newman is a bridge to Woody's children. A brilliant Americana song writer, but sort of in a category all his own. More Tom Lehrer then Joan Baez, Graham Nash, Janis Ian, Joni Mitchell. It's all good. Perhaps this is the year that was intentionally forward looking.
Ugh, Trump is planning a big 4th or July celebration at the National Mall (I can only assume it’ll attract large crowds), and our favorite little festival is going to have to cancel.
I’m not convinced that we don’t have the three original headliners: Brittany Howard, Deer Tick, and The National. At the very least, I suspect we have two of the three. With some big surprise having been planned for that Deer Tick set.
Especially if you consider the possibility for some mainstage singalong, group set on Friday after Brittany. Or some too big to have been announced headliner for after Brittany or the Tick.
But Saturday is obviously missing a big name or three, likely from a cancelled tour. Deer Tick and Drive By Truckers are the two biggest acts on that day.

Going by monthly Spotify listens DT and DBT are not the biggest names on Saturday.
Sharon Van Etten is at about 2 million Waxahatchee at about 1 million DBT at about 400k DT at about 200k
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Isn't this just because Waxahatchee and SVE are on a lot more Spotify playlists?

I would bet if you polled the Newport audience SVE and DBT would probably be about tied for most "popular", but Deer Tick are Newport royalty.
Agree. Deer Tick is royalty at Newport. (Similar to Dawes, who got a closing Quad Stage set last year.) If years of after shows have taught us anything, a Deer Tick + Friends is easily deserving of a headlining spot per Newport’s tradition of booking.
I put DBT second just based on historical context, but SVE is a close third (or maybe technically second). I’m not going to hold it against DBT that they’re not putting up the monthly numbers on Spotify because they appeal to a more throwback/older crowd and are no longer in their prime. Either way, after those 3 and Waxahatchee, there’s a pretty big drop off, even though I really like the lineup. (It doesn’t even compare to last year’s Saturday which was relatively weak as well until Dolly stepped out.)
*Waxahatchee also just dropped a new album so she’s going to have higher monthly listens as a result
Edit: Sylvan Esso could be argued as the second biggest act on this day, too. Either way feels like a big name or two dropped off.

I dunno..I was pretty convinced by the sleuthing on Bright Eyes that they would be back, and a lot of signs pointed to this finally being the Bon Iver year as well.
I can buy the National as Sunday headliner. That’s assuming they’re done with the end-of-weekend singalongs of the past few years, or if you consider the last band before the sing along the “headliner.”
I can buy Deer Ticket as Saturday closer IF they’re serious about taking a few years off from Newport entirely and IF it’s a major tick and friends show (which is not how they announced it, unlike Dawes last year)
I guess I don’t know enough about Brittany Howard’s solo draw to know if I buy her as the Friday headliner. Obviously Alabama Shakes closed the fest down a few years ago, but her side project (the one that played the quad) was in a tiiiiny venue here in my town that same year (and fuck do I regret not going.)
I think we only got one headliner—the National. Maybe two if Tick had a major “legacy” headliner planned as part of their set or to follow them.

This would all make much more sense to me if the National was the Headliner in Saturday and then DT was the “headliner” on Sunday. Either as the penultimate, leading right into the final singalong set, or just the final set with friends. Not complaining, just surprised.
Just pointing out that we have the core crew of Middle Brother on this year’s lineup.
Brittany Howard was scheduled for the same size venue as other Newport headliners have played down here. It’s not that big, but some of the headliners aren’t that big. I also don’t know how many tickets were sold as the show was part of the coronavirus postponement.

Fuck. Of course, the Bright Eyes show at this nearby venue that I had front row seated tickets for is being moved to the Saturday of Newport. So now I either have to sell this or hope both get postponed again. Which sucks either way.
Just watched a live stream on YouTube from The Tallest Man on Earth. All covers it was great. He really should be called The Sweetest Man on Earth because he is so warm and wonderful. He also has a Bandcamp cover of Wilco's Jesus with profits going to NFF foundations causes.

Oh shit. Well I'm just an idiot. I didn't see the 2021. That at least makes me a little more confident. I thought they were just pushing back a month and would re-evaluate as it got closer.

Still possible that Forest Hills overlaps Newport weekend

Oh I’m certainly expecting that to be the Newport weekend.
