If you buy tickets to the tick stream (or the Mavis show I suppose) do we know if that gets you access when it’s live only? Or if you’ll be able to tune in to watch later or watch again?

That's one thing that keeps me from buying more of the live streams. I'd love to be able to pause or start it later on at night....or re-watch later.

I can’t speak to this specific livestream, but I’ve done about 5 or 6 PPV live-streams since quarantine started, and most seem to be available for 24 hours after if premieres live.

Good to know. We’re west coast so 8:30ET is like...dinner and bedtime for our little one. I think I’ll go for it either way because I haven’t supported the fest in any way yet and this is a good start, but I’ll be bummed if I can only give it partial attention.

Not sure if anyone noticed, but the image at the bottom of the "Revival" page appears to be Deer tick performing in the Quad. Assuming this was the pre-recorded show. Other live outdoor shows I've seen had similar setups for the band to be 6 feet apart.
That photo does look awesome and makes my stomach sink a little thinking of what could have been.
I'm also not going to get into even a mini flame war over the Folk Weekend. And whomever said Jay doesn't owe us anything is correct. Music and artistic exprepression is a necessity for humans (maybe even trees, who knows), but for most of our existence we made our own music. Sitting in an audience watching others is a more recent, and more disconnected notion. We only owe making music for ourselves and each other.
But I still feel expectations were unduly raised by suggestions that we would gather as one in a special way. That was underscored. That there would be special guests and surprises. Underscored. Perhaps even something a little more risky, different, unique than other shows presenting live performances. Me being hopeful. I circled the weekend and made no other plans. I was ready to spend the bucks. And realized there would be the old and new, videos and no more than one day of streaming performances.
I don't feel conned. No one owes me anything. Our country is on the verge socially, politically, and economically. Still, in this dark time that shows no exit, I needed something a little more that matched that the earlier promise. A little romance. A little live night music and a little live talk. That's all. The idea that pre-recorded is good because the sound quality will be better is a non issue in 2020. The streams that suck are usually out of someone's home. The National News, late night TV, well equipped performers, and most radio stations simply brought in some proper equipment and the sound is sensational. But beyond that is the old argument: why go to alive concert with the uneven sound, the booming uncontrollable bass, the feedback, the performer's mistakes -- those are the earmarks of any live show. I can listen to a great studio recording or sweetened live-on-tape performance. Nut I prefer the spontaneity and the energy; the connection between performer and audience, knowing you are together at that moment, just like early days, when performer and artist were one.
They could bring out Bruce and Neil and Keith Richards, all of whom say something nice about Newport as the surprise guests, and if recorded I could care less. Get your butt to the Fort, Bruce, when there is an audience, there or watching in person. If we are gathering as one, let's find a way for people to communicate. The documentary should be great. Saturday is a bummer to me, a break from the subtle promise of Folk weekend, but I'm sure I'll tune in. Radio...there is Newport radio. Unless there is some sort of free form broadcast with live commentary, how is this really different? I've worked in radio, and the cheap station would play pre-recorded call-in shows. That station is long gone.
This is what is it, and it beats nothing. But there is a lot better stuff out there and I think the ball was dropped with a thud. Now, watch me miss something glorious and complain about that in August. Because those are the expectations of Newport, especially when we need it more than ever. Said my peace. Will enjoy what I receive. What I fear is that this conversation will return next summer. Here's to the miracle of music.

Been feeling similar but also don’t want to throw stones during these times. That being said, what I truly wanted was some personal connection. To tap into the emotion of living and the expression of that through music.
Agree that we owe ourselves music. Our family has turned more to making our own music and the results are amateur and off key and beautiful in their own right.
I would love a live session of ‘folk family’ sharing stories and songs from their homes but in communication with each other.
I would also be open to having a pre-show Zoom get together drink with members of this board on the Thursday or Friday before the Mavis show. Have met some of you in person at the fest but would love to connect and share memories of our favorite sets, and stories from festivals past. Let me know if anyone is interested and I can set it up.
Really looking forward to hearing this. He assembled a great crew to play on it, including Justin Vernon, Josh Kaufman, JT Bates, among others. Though naturally it has me wondering, was she gonna pop-in for Newport?

Yeah that timing isn’t helping lol
Thinking she was the headliner that backed out? "Folklore" a week before the festival with Dessner producing the majority of the songs.

According to Dessners IG post, she contacted him in April to do the collaboration...so probably wasn’t a plan this year. Looks like they only got together because tour plans were cancelled.
On Instagram, next to Surprise Set! is (1969), so that narrows down the surprise somewhat. I think these are some pretty solid choices, I'm gonna try to check this out a bit, looking forward to hearing the various artists sets.

To hop back to the Taylor Swift album, it's crazy to think that the National set could have had guest appearances from Michael Stipe, Taylor Swift, Justin Vernon, and others who were actually on the lineup.
As for missing headliners -- what is a headliner is always an arguable point -- but actually two big names did drop out. Every possibility that at least one makes an appearance on the Saturday live on tape.
I’m a pretty big Taylor Swift fan and this might be my favorite album of hers, even topping Red and 1989 (the latter being the album that really sold me on her).
Exile (feat Bon Iver) reminds me of a modern updated take on her old collab with Gary Lightbody.
I wasn’t sure if this album would be a little more like her track with the Civil Wars. Still poppier than that. Aaron really crushed it, and I expect to see him walking on stage with her to claim a Grammy.
I can only hope for a T Swift unannounced 2021 headliner set at Newport, because it’s the only way one could see this album performed in anything smaller than a stadium.

Just got through the Bon Iver collab. That was pretty much what I would expect for a collab from him. What a helluva buildup too! Excellent!
Listening to the rest of the album. So far, i like it.

I'm a Taylor fan too, but wow Taylor, Aaron and the gang knocked it out of the park with this one. Outside of the obvious National and Bon Iver influences, I'm getting some Phoebe Bridgers vibes too, which I think is a great and natural fit for her. It exceeded my expectations, definitely recommend giving it a listen, especially the Taylor skeptics
Love the new Taylor Swift and was not a fan previously. Great composition and the Bon Iver feature is my favorite. I want to know who The Last Great American Dynasty is about. She has a Newport house right?

I hear Phoebe, Lana Del Ray, and Imogen Heap throughout the album.
Also, anyone through a first listen, I highly recommend a follow up listen paying specific attention to the instrumentation. Some of the chamber pop behind her vocals is perfection- it could have been the backing to a Sufjan track.

The instrumentation is very good as expected but the biggest thing I notice is how much more sophisticated the lyrics compared to any of her past albums. Having a song that is seemingly about a young friend being in a household with an domestic abuser was not something I would have expected from a Taylor Swift album
