Our voices together was absolutely fantastic, and the catharsis i really needed. Jay’s monologues felt awkward and honest in the best possible way. I went back and listened to “Everything is Free” 3 times, They crushed it so hard. I’ve had an embargo on “Hallelujah” since it was used in ridiculous fashion in the “Watchmen” film, but Brandi has finally lifted the embargo and made the tune move me again.
The signs were what got us. Seeing the shot driving in I said “oh! They still put the signs up” and couldn’t keep my voice from cracking. Can’t wait to drive past them myself in 2021.

I am beating myself up for missing this. I didn't see that it would only air once until a couple hours before it was scheduled. Hopefully they release it as a pay-per-view thing soon...

It's available for 24 hours, which I assume means until 8:30pm tonight

I found this out via a text from the newport fam at like... 7:58 last night. Oh well, it wouldn't be a true NFF weekend if you didn't miss a must see performance!

Interesting snippet from a recent Aquarium Drunkard interview with Conor Oberst:
"I wanted to bring a different flavor to it. They’re essentially modern rock royalty. That isn’t really our style, but for years, I’ve played with all kinds of drummers. Everyone is into this retro let’s all play like Levon Helm feel. I love Levon Helm, but I’m not interested in being in Bob Dylan fantasy camp, where everybody’s wearing hats and we all gotta play “The Weight” at the end of every concert. I hate that shit. It drives me fucking crazy. I got no interest in that. I know I can do it better than any of those fucking people, but I don’t want to do it. It’s not interesting. I’d rather make a weird prog-rock bizarro record than show up at Newport Folk Festival and wear a cowboy hat and make believe like I’m in the 1960s."

Awesome!
I feel the same way about these ridiculous hats and jean shorts

I see where he's coming from for sure, but I hope Conor and the gang don't feel deterred to bring this weird prog-rock to Newport next year.
New Orville Peck album is really good. I know a lot of folks on the board have been singing his praises for a while but I was put off by the whole costume thing. This new album though, have only listened to it a couple of times and can highly recommend three of the songs: 'Fancy' really packs a punch. Suggest listening to it in a space where you can follow the story. The Shania Twain duet is great as is 'Drive Me, Crazy'.
Would be interested to hear from anyone who has seen him live.

The mask thing is always a hurdle for anyone. My family LOVES country music (but the kind that I consider to be pretty basic like Country Pop about red solo cups and trucks and 'merica and troops, etc.) and I just showed my mom some Orville Peck before I showed that he does his act in a mask and that made her raise an eyebrow.
I have heard a bit of him but not full albums and when I played him for my mom she said "He sounds like he's trying to be Elvis" which I definitely heard in his singing voice. I first was showing the new collab with Shania Twain and then played another song or two.
Haven't seen him live but would like to check it out.

Saw him live at Great Scott last year. He puts on a fantastic show.

Silly thought--- I wonder if Orville wears a mask under his mask.😁

I know Conor was posted here talking about the "bullshit" of fake americana/folk stuff but I still love him. This is him talking about a Felice Brothers song when ranking a number of songs that have influenced him and it's a great song/clear he loves them. He's been such a big fan of Ian Felice for years and that warms my heart as they are my favorite band.
The Felice Brothers: “Wonderful Life” If anybody puts a gun to my head and asks my favorite band, I always say the Felice Brothers. There’s this whole fucking billion-dollar musical elephant based off Americana music, and it’s so ridiculously transparent. I’ll just say it: Mumford and all that shit is so obviously fucking fake. I mean, they’re not even American. Get out of here! But the Felice Brothers are the real thing. They just walk out and embarrass every band trying to sound like that.
In terms of lyrics, Ian Felice is one of the people I’m completely in awe of. Bill Callahan’s another guy where, no matter what he’s doing, I want to hear his words. Not that it’s a contest, but everytime, I’m just like, “Damn it. Ian outshined me again.” There’s one verse in that song, it’s like [sings]:
Me and Joey started a fire on the road just to watch it glow His father didn’t like it much, gave Joey a black eye You and me, we done the same damn thing Fell in love, knowing the pain it would bring Now all I do is sing sad songs with red eyes
I mean, get out of town! We also put that record out. After the shit with Saddle Creek started going south, my manager and I started this label Team Love. We put out the self-titled Felice Brothers record, and I think that’s the best thing I ever did for music, because that record is a true masterpiece.
In December 2010, I got married at the Cloisters, which is at the top of Manhattan. It was cold, but we had this tent. It was really sweet. Jim James sang us down the aisle, M. Ward sang us off the aisle, and the Felice Brothers played the reception. Our first dance was that song. It’s a beautiful memory: a snowy night in Manhattan, gettin’ married with the Felice Brothers singing to you. Can’t really beat that.
Justin Townes Earle has passed away. Tremendous loss.
Holy shit. Wow, that's a bit surprising. I haven't listened to him very recently but I was really into him when I first started listening. He was fantastic at the Great Surprise tour.

Yeah I got to see him one last time, in September of 2019. Was a very off performance for him, you could tell he was definitely not straight. Came back out for the encore with no shirt on. Was just bizarre. Left there concerned that he was struggling again, and well here we are.
In the end it’s just a huge talent that was gone too soon.
Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, frontman of the pioneering reggae outfit Toots and the Maytals and one of the greatest voices in popular music, has died at the age of 77. The reggae giant was hospitalized last month after showing symptoms consistent with the coronavirus.
