Liking what I'm hearing so far on the new Fleet Foxes and Sufjan Stevens albums. I wouldn't have recognized the opening Fleet Foxes track was by them. Syjan's album reminds me of his album The Age of Adz.
From NME re: Fleet Foxes new album - The balmy, brighter disposition of ‘Crack-Up’s successor, ‘Shore’ – a surprise collection released on the arrival of the autumnal equinox – is a reinvigorating return to form. As Pecknold explains, the album “celebrates life in the face of death”, and that’s reflected in its livelier propellent rhythms and communal vocals from outside collaborators.

Here's a full set uploaded a couple months ago with a bunch of Bluegrass versions and covers at the Ryman. Would love to see a Stugrass set at Newport when the world is semi-normal again.
Somehow missed the release from Resistance Revival Chorus. Features Rhiannon Giddens, Valerie June and others. Great music. Wish we could have seen them this summer. Would have been the perfect Sunday morning Harbor Stage act. When you are exhausted from after shows and ready to shed tears of joy.

Here is to a hopeful, joyful week ahead.
I checked that one out too and really enjoyed it, hope they come out to the next one! There's been some great new albums from the past few weeks, including: Kevin Morby, Deep Sea Diver, Adrianne Lenker, This is the Kit
Elephant in room. Pfizer announcing preliminary trials of vaccine proving 90% effective today. Obviously general public won't get it or others vaccine right away. Thinking late Spring for rollout. Cuts it close for Newport. A lot of general public will have had it which will add to herd immunity. If Newport goes ahead am guessing it'd be with sanitizer stations, masks and possibly zoned seating access. For example, they'd have three zones. If your ticket was zone 2 you'd have zone 2 access at all stages. Newport ticket sales probably coming up relatively soon so might learn more of their plans soon.

Am very optimistic about Newport next year. Attendance might be kept a little lower at first to support spreading out with a possibility of releasing second batch of tickets closer to date if vaccine is widely available. As it is outdoors, and folks are masked in addition to the low summertime spread we saw and the, at least partial, availability of a vaccine, I think they will do something.
I produced the new Mandolin Orange record… What else? Oh! The new Fruit Bats record, I did that since moving up here to Kingston [NY]. I go into the studio with Guster next week. Then after that, I’m starting work on Anaïs Mitchell’s new music. Then all throughout this time, I’m sort of writing some new Bonny Light Horseman songs. And we’re maybe three-quarters of the way into a new Muzz record.

His resume is so stacked. He produced the new This is the Kit too, which is expectedly solid
This may be an optimistic post, but Floydfest announced their initial lineup for next year. Same weekend as Newport and traditionally has some overlap. Reasonable wishes for Newport: Sturgill (especially if it's a bluegrass set), Molly Tuttle, Nicole Atkins and Katie Pruitt
Simpson talked about the Porsche 911 Turbo John Prine left him in his estate, calling it a "bucket list dream car" for the late singer-songwriter. Simpson, who has three sons, quipped that he feels like he now has a fourth child with the responsibility of the Porsche.

Very interesting. I’m curious if things are, say, 75% back to normal if we’ll see fests getting creative to go on. I know someone here mentioned lower capacity. Do you think Newport could do two weekends? Normally it’s folk fest and then jazz fest a week later so they’re kinda sorta doing it already, I wonder if they could stretch it to folk fest-folk fest jazz fest-jazz fest to sell the same amount of tickets but still be able to social distance. Maybe wishful thinking on my part, because the thought of trying to get tickets at reduced capacity is...stressful.

I would think the cost of retaining the musicians for two weeks would be more prohibitive than the reduced capacity.
Also, I'm giving it a less than 50% chance this happens because Gina hates fun.

That's a good point that I hadn't considered.
I'm assuming indoor venues will not be back to normal by next summer. Normally one of the ways the eagle eyed guess the Newport lineup on here is "oh they're playing Boston the week before and New Haven the week after". I wonder if artists, if they can't play those shows, would be willing to take less or the same amount over two weeks because "some work/exposure" is better than "no work/exposure." Part of the Newport brand is big artists taking less/donations to smaller artists, but who knows whether the fest is in a position to pay smaller artists for two weekends.
As for 50% chance...last night I said to my wife, "I'm positive tickets for the folk fest will go on sale. After that, I have no idea."
New letter from Jay states on sale info will occur after the new year and teased “spending more time together.”
A MESSAGE FROM JAY:
Dear Folk Family,
Over the years I’ve taken this day to send out a message of gratitude for what we’ve accomplished and what we envision for our future. Even in these uncertain and unprecedented times I believe what we do together as a community, one built on our shared love of all things music, can be a truly unifying and healing force. While not being together at the fort this past summer was emotionally challenging for us to say the least, what we’ve managed to do outside of it gives me a continued and much needed wellspring of hope.
As our Foundation supporters and members know from our recent newsletter, we’ve been actively commissioning our family of artists to create unique and custom music education content for us to share with music programs around the country. In addition, we’ve managed to keep our Musicians Relief Fund alive and active to help those most in need. In short, we’ve placed our collective attention on keeping our ecosystem alive, so we have something to come back to and celebrate when we can finally commune together.
Of course this brings us to the pertinent question on all our minds. When will that be? As you know this is also the time of year we normally go on sale. However, due to the continued uncertainty, we're focusing our efforts on developing the best and safest ways for us to gather at the Fort with all our partners and artists alike. This includes hatching some new surprises and orchestrating ways for us to spend even more time together in 2021 and beyond.
So, stay tuned as we’ll be announcing more details (including on-sale info) in the new year.
Looks like Newport dictates tastes for rock, alternative, americana, and bluegrass genres if Grammy nominations are any indication. What a time to be a fan of Newport’s definition of folk music.
The video today with Phil Cook brought tears to my eyes. The Newport Foundation does so much good! So thankful for the joy they bring to all of us. Happy Thanksgiving!
I’m sure most have already seen it, but here is the Swift, Dessner, Antonoff, Vernon tune.
First live performance of Exile.
Watched half the album performances yesterday. I was curious how her boyfriend was such a solid songwriter. She mentioned he wrote Exile for her and that Justin added a few pieces. Didn't realized he played in Fun and co-wrote 'We Are Young'. She has a goofy sense of humor but is smart, driven and man can she sing and weave lyrics. I'm still in shock and how fast she put Folklore together. She has vast numbers of fans and influence. By doing this she's broadening their musical horizons. That can't be a bad thing.

Jack Antonoff is not her boyfriend. He produced/wrote a lot of it amongst other great records. She was referencing Joe Alwyn who wrote a couple under a pseudonym, he was not on screen for the concert.

Interesting. Looks like he's an actor. Sounds like he has something to fall back on if he gives up the day job.
According to the singer, “Joe plays piano beautifully and he’s always just playing and making things up and kind of creating things.”
My Spotify wrapped top artists of the year was dominated by Newport 2020 performers: Waxahatchee, Randy Newman, The National, Fleet Foxes, and Mandolin Orange
Was listening to an Irish radio station online today. The DJ didn't want to play any Christmas song requests yet. He made an exception for this. Made me curious about the story behind the song. As a bonus I found this amazing live version and background video from 1970.
From wiki: The song is about the recent breakup of a romantic relationship, with the singer longing to escape her painful emotional bonds. It is thought to be inspired by Mitchell's 1968–1970 relationship with Graham Nash. Although the song is merely set near Christmas time, rather than being about Christmas, it has become something of a modern Christmas standard. Writer Will Blythe believes the song is connected to a visit to Chapel Hill that Mitchell made with then beau James Taylor and a caroling session with his family, the Taylor family, and Mitchell.
