End of the Road Festival announced their lineup for 2021. I was listening through their Spotify playlist and there is a lot of good stuff I wasn't familiar with, especially in the mid and lower-tiers. /photo/1

Give us some names?
I won't include Newport alumni like Andy Shauf, Songhoy Blues, Margaret Glaspy, etc., but I'll break out my finds into 2 categories: acts I'm familiar with but need to listen to more and acts that are completely new to me that I'm digging on first listen.
Familiar With: Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Arlo Parks, Nadia Reid, Monophonics, Skullcrusher, Kate Bollinger New To Me: Girl Ray, Vanishing Twin, Penelope Isles, Katy J Pearson, Trash Kit, Jeffrey Martin
I fully expect Arlo Parks to have a big year in 2021. All of her singles from her forthcoming album are really good.
Let me know if you like any of those or find any other goodies in the lineup.

The Comet Is Coming is great, but on the jazzy side. If you don’t like Jazz, then maybe you won’t like them.
I think I like this one more than volume 1, they sound great!
The new Taylor is a goody too
New Sturgill is really good. Is that Sierra Hull on mandolin? Nice! She was at Newport as part of the Dolly show, right?
Give me last year’s Newport lineup with a Sturgill bluegrass set and a Taylor Swift Folklore/Evermore set.
Some random sh#@
Newport recently said they were orchestrating new surprises and ways to spend even more time together in 2021 and beyond. The comment about spending even more time together is curious. Any ideas what that might mean?
Phoebe Bridgers and Lara Ulrich interviewing each other is super entertaining
I always feel each new Paul Mccartney album has a few songs that Lennon would have digged. Like this.
Speaking of Taylor. The last scene from Folklore's Cardigan video and first scene from Evermore's Willow video are a continuation.
Edit: Looks like some of the Evermore tunes were originally meant for Big Red Machine.
From Rolling Stone - Taylor Swift and Aaron Dessner didn’t expect to make another record so soon after Folklore. As they were putting the final touches on Swift’s album this past summer, the two artists had been collaborating remotely on possible songs for Big Red Machine, Dessner’s music project with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver (who also dueted with Swift on the Folklore track “Exile”).
“I think I’d written around 30 of those instrumentals in total,” Dessner recalls. “So when I started sharing them with Taylor over the months that we were working on Folklore, she got really into it, and she wrote two songs to some of that music.”
One was “Closure,” an experimental electronic track in 5/4 time signature that was built over a staccato drum kit. The other song was “Dorothea,” a rollicking, Americana piano tune. The more Dessner listened to them, the more he realized that they were continuations of Folklore.
Dessner wrote a musical sketch and named it “Westerly,” after the town in Rhode Island where Swift owns the house previously occupied by Rebekah Harkness. “I didn’t really think she would write something to it — sometimes I’ll name songs after my friends’ hometowns or their babies, just because I write a lot of music and you have to call it something, and then I’ll send it to them,” Dessner says. “But, anyway, I sent it to her, and not long after she wrote ‘Willow’ to that song and sent it back.”
Gov Ball just rescheduled for end of September. I’m assuming the likes of Boston Calling and Bonnaroo will do the same. What are we thinking about our little festival? I know it’s still too early to tell but I’ll thank my lucky stars for NFF in 2021!

I dont know how much farther back on the calendar NFF could realistically go. You go into September, you're going to run into a much earlier curfew or a need for exterior lighting.
new album out today from Buck Meek, lead guitar from Big Thief and its a really spacey, country tinged treat.
in particular, this song has been on repeat in my house for the last two weeks, it's just stunningly gorgeous. cowritten with Adrienne from BT. My soul needs them and a solo set for Buck at the fort soon.

Already two listens in to the album today, really liking it. I'd be all for a solo Buck Meek set at Newport. I know Twain played a few years back, but Newport should give him some kind of guest-heavy set similar to Phil Cook. I know at the bare minimum he's worked on the Courtney Marie Andrews, Langhorne and Buck albums within the past year.

I'll also shout out the Aaron Frazer album from last week and the shame album that came out today. Not sure if shame would be a good fit for Newport, but Aaron Frazer for sure would be

According to a tweet reply on Twitter from Jay, Joy Oladokun is coming to NFF. I haven’t the foggiest who that is, but I’m pretty sure that was not announced.

Sounds like Jay is still making some bookings, or this is an old booking that went unannounced.

Not totally surprised to see her name here, she was part of NPR's artists to watch for 2021
So the sunset in Newport on July 25th is 823 pm. By Sept 2, you lose an hour and its at 723. By Sept 25th it drops to 640.
I can’t imagine Newport would want to spend extra money on lighting for an evening festival, even if the town/state gave them the ok to go past sundown, having just missed out on a whole year’s revenue.
I still think we could see two weekends with a smaller amount of tickets sold. If you draw six feet circles on the ground outside the fort, half the chairs in the tents, make the museum EVEN HARDER to get into and require masks, I think a socially distanced fest could actually be possible. If other fests are pushing to fall, that might mean the artists will have more time on their hands to stick around for a week. And They’ve already got the fort reserved for a second weekend for jazz fest every year, what’s two more?
Anyone else got baseless speculation on how this could be pulled off? Feels like it’s just a touch too early based on where other fests are trying to go, but it also seems like a smaller festival might be able to get more creative. Seeing other fests cancel and move dates again is stressing me out.
Realistic options for Newport: 1. Cancel for 2021. 2. A drastically reduced attendance and accordingly a drastically reduced lineup compared to previous years. 3. Moved to a larger location for a year, probably outside of Newport.
Thank you Beaker and TimBobSnow for posting new artists here. Am jonesing for those winter announcements that help get me through these dark days and turn me on to new music. Will pretend these are announcements and dive in.

New release in this Shovels & Rope series. Could be fun for a Newport set for family/kids
The third installment of S&R collaborative records series “Busted Jukebox” features Shovels and Rope and friends performing cover songs. This time, they’ve nicknamed the album Busted Juicebox because of its kid-friendly song choices which feature artists like Sharon Van Etten, The War and Treaty, and the Secret Sisters.
