Very excited about this. Recently re-watched the movie but did the longest version (with the full Black Freighter cartoon included) but never fully read the comic. I know it's based on the comics so some things I don't know but I'm still pumped about what this will be.
Most stuff I've read from critics sounds like this is very good and ambitious but may also be divisive and some people will not like/get it. The cast is amazing and I love the property so I can't wait. Plus I'll check out whatever the guy behind The Leftovers will put out.

Something I only learned about when Ta-Nehisi Coates was writing about reparations and the same thing seems to be the case for Damon Lindelof, based on his rolling stone interview with Alan Sepinwall, which also inspired a major theme/story for this show: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulsa_race_riot
Also, little foreshadowing (potential minor comic tie-in spoiler):
Old Dude asks Angela if he can lift 200 pounds. She’s says “sure you can”.
Cut to the end of the episode
Saw some speculation that Ossie Davis will be revealed to be Hooded Justice, a member of the original Minutemen team who was inspired by that cowboy movie he was watching. Would be an awesome tie-in.
Love the original comic run, probably the best comic book story of all time, I even dig the movie for the most part. This was... very different. I really don’t know what the whole angle is going to be but I’m in for the ride. The first episode was excellent on a technical level, and Trent and Atticus can seriously do no wrong. I dug it, as is, but I’m sure it’s going to take another couple episodes to really get an idea of where this might be going.

Read the graphic novel stat, it's incredible. I like the movie more than most, but it misses key aspects of the graphic novel that could've made it amazing.
I loved it. Once the interrogation scene started bumping the Trent Reznor, I was all in. And the fact it's making a lot of people very angry is an added bonus.
As premium television I loved it and I enjoyed the subtle world-building and small tie-ins to the comic. You can tell it's going to take awhile before there is any real clue as to what's going on, but that's always how Lindelof likes to do things. But I can see how Alan Moore hates it (being Alan Moore and all) and how die hard fans will dismiss it completely.

Got on it last night. Echo a lot of the sentiment about not having a good feel for things as of yet. I reminded myself during the episode that The Leftovers didn't really hit for most people until episode 6, so I am not shocked on this. I love a show that just drops you in the world and makes you figure it out. I can also readily see how politics are going to make some people really dislike this show.
Are there any people here who haven't read the graphic novel? I'm curious what someone who is just getting introduced to this universe (no movie or comic) thinks of some of the things going on.
Really really enjoyed it, and thought it was kind of crazy that they just threw people in to this universe without much, and am nervous that may be jarring for a new watcher who is looking for something to fill in for GoT or Westworld or something. Just hope this show lasts

Ossie Davis is the kid from the beginning. Also think he could be hooded justice of the original minutemen.
Judd leaving at the end may have been more sinister than it seemed. He may have either been going to meet with the 7th Kavalry or may have been going to hospital to make sure the cop didn't talk (since he chose to go alone and seemed so serious and stone faced when putting on his uniform).
When he was getting dressed they linger and focus on a photo which seems like it would be a young Judd and his father or grandfather. During the Tulsa massacre scenes the camera lingers on a young man in KKK robes as he crosses the path of the mother, father, and boy.
What if young KKK guy is the old guy in the photo and Judd isn't as Noble or good as he may have seemed. There's a conspiracy and it involves the police?

Ossie Davis died in 2005, bro. I think you mean Lou Gossett Jr.

Oh fuck. I'm a racist. Lol I mixed that up for sure. I was just looking up Bubba Ho Tep the other day but I still remember reading Lou Gossets name when reading stuff going into the show so I'm just dumb.

Either way, same theory/guess. Wrong guy.
I actually did a double take when I read it because I thought I messed up somehow. To your theory, he was holding the letter that the boy in the riots had at the beginning, so I would think that part of the theory is pretty secure. I could definitely see him as being a former hero given the way he appeared to idolize the movie at the beginning. From a narrative sense, it would give an easy way to connect the heroes of the past to the world of today where they have seemingly gone extinct or morphed into the detective personas that you see. Regina King could realize the larger conspiracy that is linked to the police department and strikes out on her own independent of their corruption.

I haven't read the graphic novel or watched the movie and no idea about this universe.
Similar to Dave Maynar's comments earlier, I love a show that leaves things to be figured out by the viewer. I had a quite a few WTF moments throughout the episode - and it immediately made me wanna watch the next episode.
Oh, the score by Atticus and Trent also helps a lot. Can't wait for listening to it.

Yeah, the note is basically confirming that he's the young kid. Everything else is mostly speculation and ideas I've seen others share. Him idolizing the hero in the old movie and copying the dark hooded look would make sense. And him being bitter now because once he believed in the law but now is jaded because of what the world has become.
Very interested to see how this all plays out. I definitely think Regina will start to learn that Judd isn't as great as he seemed. But we'll see.
I bet we still get some Don Johnson in the show, though. Flashbacks and news footage or something.

Loving this show so far.
Starting to wonder about the theories I've heard about Jeremy Irons' character. Originally thought for sure he was Ozzy but maybe something else is up? Or maybe that's what Lindelof wants us to think? Either way....this show rocks.
Loved seeing the little bit of backstory with White Night. Also enjoyed more of the police procedure stuff and the interaction with Angela and Will.
Are we supposed to believe it was Dr. Manhattan that almost dropped the car on Laurie, responding to her brick joke? Or was it just a Lindelof irony joke?
This week's episode really lends credence to the theory that Veidt is imprisoned on Mars by Dr. Manhattan, and his storyline actually takes place in the recent past.

I'm just glad they confirmed who he is. Because I started seeing some wild theories that part of me started to think "Hmm....maybe this makes sense" lol
Surprised there is not much discussion about this - the last episode was very awesome, and made me notice that I need to start reading more about the events happening before the show.

I'm also surprised this hasn't been renewed yet?
Agreed on the episode quality. It keeps getting better for me.
I saw an interview with Lindelof where he said that he had not done any planning for season two because he did not want a bunch of lingering mysteries and did not know how people would enjoy the show. He is not against it by any stretch, but he said he wants to make it right if it is going to be made and is in no rush.

I was just reading about it. He claims that they will answer almost all the questions they laid out in the first few episodes. If that's how it's gonna be, I'm completely fine with this being one season.
And apparently Doctor Manhattan will show up soon too (I'm really excited about that one)!
I was so busy on my last show that I missed so many threads including this one. I however, have not missed an episode. I am less confused than the beginning, did see the movie only years ago and in 100% into this show.
