Hey 3post1jack1 , I've been wanting to follow up that Tipper post with some reference material. We will likely get a faster music, uptempo set with some heaviness and bass because it's at a festival. Depending on what they do with him - headline The Other or late night Which probably depends on how heavy and in what directions the show goes. Either way, we should get a set with several transitional parts mixed in with some live scratching and live mixing rather than an alternative EDM-genre show. But his fans know he generally plays more random sets than he plays festival sets. So I dug up a bunch of shit to explain some of the things he does so no one will ever think if they've seen Tipper once, they know what he's about. Obviously just skim through some of the parts as elements will be included here and there - particularly if it's a 75 or 90 minute show.
Tipper Ambient - Chapel of Sacred Mirrors circa 2015 w/ original art by Alex and Allyson Grey manipulated by Jonathan Singer.
Tipper Ambient - Orpheum in NOLA 2018
Tipper Downtempo Set - Saenger NOLA 2020
Tipper IDM Set (piece) - Saenger NOLA 2020
Tipper live set/live scratching portion @ Seattle 2012
Tipper Uptempo set portion from 2017 Minnesota
There is a ton of other shit and styles out there, but hopefully this gets the point.
Would honestly be pretty surprised if Tipper is LN Which, seems like a lock to headline the Other to me
Will definitely check out those videos though!
Yeah late night Which is a caveat. I think the late night edm sets were usually Saturday the years I went. And he’s playing Friday. It’s a low chance because it looks like Big Wild/Svdden Death > TroyBoi > Tipper on The Other. Being it’s Bonnaroo, ideally Tipper does a pod set late night. I know people who know him, so if there’s going to be something, they will know. The videos were just some examples of what he plays on his multi night runs and how vast his arsenal is.

Would be 100% not mad if Foos and Tipper conflicted because otherwise I likely won't get to see Tipper given the glut of other potential Friday LN options
Unfortunately that means conflict with part of Foo Fighters. So they’ll conflict with Troy and Tipper most likely. :/
I'm not sure he'll conflict with Foo Fighters. Both of The Other "headliners" for Fri and Sat of 2019 went on from 2-3:15am.
Yeah. I had to go back and look at the schedule to see what you were talking about with the quoted headliners. Sure enough RL and Zhu were the last name on the colored lines for their days, and both played that 2-3:15 spot. No hate for either of those guys, but I was apparently blinded by my own bias of what I would have considered Friday and Saturday's EDM headliners - Liquid Stranger and Gramatik. They were both lower down the poster. Liquid Stranger was I think 10pm, and Gramatik was some point after midnight but had a shorter set. So assuming they give Tipper 2-3:15am, then the conflicts come into play as to who might be on super late. I'd skip Tipper for the Disco Biscuits. (Edit out) I often like to get a late night rap set in, but I really don't care about Nelly. I have very limited interest in Young Thug who failed to show up the one time I went to go see him. I saw Jack Harlowe a couple years ago, and that was enough for at least a couple more years. RTJ is probably before 2am. So I guess Primus is the only realistic conflict to me.
In that case, it would be game-time decision or more Primus knowing that a bunch of people travel for Tipper and will video and post his show on YouTube meaning I'll get to watch it at some point later.

Addressed above, but I don't see it for the 2am timeslot. There's no particularly great rap like GZA & Grupo Fantasma doing Liquid Swords or Gucci or Ludacris playing that night. It's Young Thug, Nelly, Jack Harlowe on the rap front. I could easily 86 all those sets with no loss. Biggest concern for me would be Primus. Maybe they give Markus King Band an extended That Tent set late? And that's fine and a show I would pass by because I always liked them. Maybe I'm missing some other possibility for a 2am slot? Maybe Glass Animals?

Yeah I'm think it'll be either a Primus or Disco Biscuits conflict with Tipper. Surely one of those two will get a long late night That tent set.
I’m guessing you are right. I love the overnight jam and jamtronica shows Bonnaroo does (Umphrey’s, Sound Tribe, etc.). Not only is the music and musicianship on a higher bar, but the freaks are always out having a good and sometimes freaky time. I’ve seen some shit at those shows that surpasses some of the things I’ve seen at Other or late night Which EDM sets.
On second look, TDB has got to get the overnight jam set. I could have sworn someone said they were doing a Roo show while playing at The Caverns. But they don’t play the Caverns until November. They usually play about 3 hours and tend to have a 20-30 minute set break. Plus That Tent to The Other is nothing. I could easily get some Tipper time in and see the majority of TDB. Then the hope is that it’s not a 3 way dance with Primus on then too. But I have tickets to a local make-up date for Tribute to Kings if I gotta miss some of them at Bonnaroo.

One thing that remains to be seen with all these potential long late night sets, is how late they’ll actually schedule the tents this year
With them apparently ditching kalliope and announcing the other will go “all night”, does this mean they’ll schedule tents super late again? Would really help with potential conflicts if this and that go until 4am again
They booked quite a few acts that tend to play long sets compared to the last couple years—do they go back to shorter gaps between sets? I just don’t know how it will compare to 2019’s schedule given all that

is that true? the other went "all night" in 2019 and they had kalliope if my foggy memory serves me correct

they specifically announced for 2020 that the Other will go until sunrise
Lol that Tipper Red Rocks 2 night run next weekend is still a few hundred dollars more expensive than a 4-day pass to Bonnaroo. It’s been like that for at least a month. He’s got some rabid fans.

Get to see him at Roo then going to Resonance to go see him do two sets. I’m not deep into it , but his live shows are something else. I get the fuss.
You and I have discussed it many times, and yeah, I get it too. A bunch of our friends in NOLA and Colorado via NOLA are part of that family and talk and text with him (shit, 2 of my kids are flying up there next week). They all say he's a really cool guy without the ego bullshit. He just wants to put on events where people can explore creativity and have a good time whether it's a city run or some shows out in the mountains somewhere. It's always going to be a freak circus. Luckily due to some of those connections, I was able to catch 5 of the last 6 Twelfth Night masquerade shows he did here (2 one year then all 3 in 2020). As you know, those shows included Downtempo, IDM, Ambient full sets and some live mixing. The only remotely bass heavy show I've seen out of the 7 or so times I've seen him was Voodoo. I remember posting back in the spring that even though every show he does is unique, I felt like a Bonnaroo set would be atypical and more of a play to the bassier crowd than what you'd usually get although he'll probably transition through several genres along the way. I'm fine with that, because it's not a side of Tipper you really get to see except at a festival We'll hopefully get an announcement soon about who is going to be doing the stage art and whether or not that will be mixed live. I'm the only one on Inforoo with the specific conflict problem that night because I'm not going to want to miss TDB. But if they do get a 3 or 4 hour double set and shit works out, I'm willing to skip the middle of the Biscuits and their set break to see Tipper since it's the only time I'll get to see him this year and I have TDB 2 night run during Jazz Fest.
Yeah I can’t miss RTJ I’d but I’m really hoping Tipper isn’t the same time. It would be awesome if he did his set and then did a sunrise set of more ambient stuff. I just want to hear Virga at sunrise on the farm. I’m hoping he does another event at Suwannee this year.
