Tyler with a new album is nothing short of a headliner. I don't see him dropping a new album by Coachella 2021, though. But with all this extra time for artists to work on music, who knows. He wouldn't be an underwhelming Friday headliner, generally speaking, at all in my opinion. (He would just be an underwhelming RATM replacement IF that's where he was booked). 2022 would probably be the move though. I do think we keep all 3 2020 HLs though.
Only thing I'd say is that reaching the level he's reached is no guarantee he'll continue down that path. Lots of acts have gotten to subheadliner level and not beyond. Simply having a new album doesn't make him a headliner, and frankly I'm dubious he'll get much further than he has - perhaps the "weak" headliner but not beyond (though he's surprised me to this point); and I say that as someone who likes Tyler.
I disagree. Tyler’s music has evolved and he’s proven to be a true artist. That doesn’t happen very often. A lot of artist stick to what they know and do 2-3 albums and fall off. Usually by the later of half of their career everything sound exactly the same. I’m not saying I can predict the future, but I think you’re really selling him short but placing in the bucket with “lot of acts”. He means a lot more to the industry then that.

obligatory "spotify listeners aren't the only metric that matters", but he has around 11 million as compared to Tame Impala's 12 million, he's right on the cusp of being a major festival headliner.
he's also shown himself to be a hell of an artist. he was provocative right out the gate, but continued to change, grow, and innovate with every album. he also has the benefit of having had a lot of stage experience, and even when I saw OFWGKTA it was remarkable how polished they all were, especially compared to similarly young artists at that time. his shoes and clothing line are dope and have been successful, he's got a face that is hard to take your eyes of, and the kids love him.
if you haven't seen his performance at the grammys, do check it out, it's remarkable:
Billie Eilish will just come back to headline anyways.
Still has to actually do the tour she had booked which included 3 nights in LA already. And I dont think GV is gonna try and pull another Ariana Grande thing and pay out the ass to make it happen when they can wait. She isnt really going anywhere unless her 2nd album is a dumpster fire musically and commercially, which at this point is doubtful cause she could release a decent single and it would go top 10 on the charts.

Damn didn’t realize how many Tyler stans were here. I like tyler, his live shows are fine. Personally, I would be pretty underwhelmed but maybe I have been underrating him.

To be completely honest I'm actually surprised he doesn't have more listeners than Tame Impala
Tyler is a very polarizing act for me, been to Flog Gnaw twice, have seen him at Coachella 15 and Flog Gnaw 18. tremendous respect for what he does, just have never really had it all click for me. there's artists like Gambino who are super popular but I just don't think are good, but Tyler is the real deal. he'll definitely headline Coachella eventually, he's too close with GV to not and he is absolutely on the trajectory.
Tyler is much funnier and more active on social media than Kevin Parker. Not sure if you guys follow Tame on insta but it’s mostly just Kevin posting pictures taken on his iPhone when it’s not promotional stuff

Igor is a over year old and Tame was one of the last pre quarantine albums

Hes a great live performer imo. My only question is if he is popular enough for mainstream goers. His 2018 crowd was awful, especially compared to the crowds at CFG
One more popular album like Igor or Flower Boy could do it, but he would need 2 big name headliners with him
I am hoping he is not there in 2021 though, 2022 with a new album at the earliest
Original headliners still make a ton of sense, but Travis can always be replaced.
If his next album is at least on par with Astro (worse than his last few albums), then I am fine with him back
2018 was an anomaly because everyone on the mainstage Saturday got Beyhived. No one had a good crowd leading up to Beyonce. Tyler is only getting better as an artist and performer, and his popularity is sky rocketing. I, myself, wasn't really a big Tyler fan with his earlier stuff. He's definitely headliner or bust with his next album. I know acts like LDR were supposed to be headliners then got stagnant (I know NFR was acclaimed, but the albums preceeding it didn't live up to her trajectory in the earlier 2010s)
People don't think Tyler can headline at the same fest that made Phoenix a headliner.
Phoenix is the reason I hesitate to assume that Tyler is a headliner with a new album. I love Phoenix deeply, but that was a mistake. I think Tyler is probably a headliner soon, but a relatively weak one, and there are scenarios where he's not (like if he takes five years to release his next album and it's a dud). That's really all I was saying.

GV is very aware they miscalculated with Phoenix. They counted on "Bankrupt" doing what "El Camino" did for The Black Keys. I even remember folks on the old Coachella boards insisting that GV heard "Bankrupt" early and knew it would be huge, and that's why they were a headliner. It was obviously not huge. (Decent album, though.)

I was surprised by how much bankrupt flopped. Phoenix couldn’t even instantly sell out Club Nokia, and yet they were headlining Coachella.
While fine, I think Tyler is a little overrated at this point. I think the most plausible move for him (if a bump is necessary) would be Sub.
re: Phoenix - Bankrupt aside they also probably didn’t predict that the Indie rock boom would come to a screeching halt just as it was really picking up steam. I blame Win Butler and his dumb hats.
Tyler successfully toured arenas last year. If his next album is as big as IGOR, he's ready.
I'm not sure if every show was like this, but when I saw him in Miami on the IGOR tour a significant portion of the seats were never available for purchase. He only filled 2/3 of the arena at most.

Good point. I think they blocked off the uppers in Tampa too.
