I think with KSG and Daytona he has shown that he's still capable of putting out good stuff, but left to his own devices he puts out whack stuff. He needs someone like Cudi or Push to reign him in, it seems like, and it wasn't like that until recently. Even Pablo was a beautiful mess where huge stars were willing to not be credited as features. He's essentially gone back to being a really good producer.

Whoa whoa whoa, Kanye has gone off the deep end but to say he's on the same path as R. Kelly and Chris Brown is completely asinine. Kanye has crazy politics, R. Kelly and Chris Brown abused women. If you want to compare him to somebody, it's Morrissey, not those two pieces of shit.
Musically, he's his peak is behind him but despite his antics, I'd argue his stardom is bigger than it's ever been right now and certainly moreso than Travis Scott. People here trying to say he's past his prime when there's literally a band headlining who's over 20 years past theirs and was never as big as Kanye either.

Kanye is committing election fraud to help Donald Trump retain the presidency.
We can talk about whether that and physical violence against women are moral equivalents, but to me it's not necessary, because that's also very very bad.

Alright that’s fair on Brown/Kelly, I didn’t mean it as a literal comparison. But defending Kanye by saying “he hasn’t abused any women, he’s just a Nazi” is still kind of proving my point.
Travis Scott has 13 million more monthly listeners than Kanye, which we know is the only true measure of stardom.

Also my memory of Sunday Service being added to Coachella is that Weekend 2 resale was well below face and Golden Voice put a bunch of fresh tickets up for sale and didn’t sell them out.
I don’t think the campaign rally translates to concert ticket sales in a more normal world. I wouldn’t even go to a Frank Ocean campaign rally in a pandemic. I’m not gonna risk my parents‘ lives to see one of my favorite artists talk about how they think they can make the country better. Even Trump who has the most brainwashed fans of all time is pulling much much smaller crowds

Yes, Kanye still has lots of fans, but thats only half the equation. I can’t think of many headliners who’d elicit a more visceral negative reaction as well. The press would be quite bad. Most people I know would be hugely turned off to the fest (though would still probably go). And even the people happy he was booked would largely hold a “I’ll believe it when I see it” attitude.
I also think it’s just inappropriate to book someone in his mental state. GV’s done that a couple times before with Amy Winehouse and Sly Stone, and we know how those worked out. He needs help, not to be put in front of 100,000 people, many of whom may be jeering at him.

I will say in GV’s defense that booking Axl Rose was seen as hugely risky and it ended up turning his career around. So I can’t completely hold it against them to think they can work that magic again with Kanye. I disagree with that thinking, but I’d love to be proven wrong by them.

i think GNR will be the best executed comeback/reunion i'll ever see in my life. still can't believe how good the show at the Superdome was.

Fair, but in my recollection that was risky in a “oh he never shows on time and they argue a lot” way, not a “this person needs serious medical help” way.
I too would love to see Kanye come back with good music and a not awful persona, but until he gets that help I can’t see it happening. Things like running for president and headlining festivals are enablement, not help.

Ya I’m much more on your side of the argument. But I do see how giving him an opportunity to succeed at something like Coachella could be beneficial. I think you’re right that he won’t succeed without some sort of major intervention, but that headlining spot could serve to be the motivation for that. I think what GV is doing is different from the sort of enabling that people who support his presidential run are doing. Again, I doubt it works out, but I do see how GV (or any other big fest) could make this decision in good faith.
Axl Rose had more issues going on than he was late to stuff and argued with Slash. Assault charges, cancelled tours, all sorts of stuff that is out there if you look for it, and maybe would seem as bad or worse than Kanye of it happened in the social media era. When the reunion was announced I was excited but definitely skeptical. But he proved me wrong.

his piano broke during November rain at the first Houston show and we kind of took a breath like oh fuck we get the meltdown show, he smiled and just kept on with the keys that worked.

Cause Axl remembered about the check he would get after finishing the show and that there were 200 more of them on the way if he didnt meltdown.

Considering the risk of it all, I'm curious if GV approached Kanye or if it was the other way around. They have a good relationship so if Kanye had some crazy idea about a set he wants to do, I wouldn't be surprised if he was the one who reached out to GV about headlining similar to what happened with RATM.
Also, someone on eFestivals said he's doing a festival circuit so if that's true, him being at Coachella makes a lot more sense and probably less risky.

if kanye is at coachella 2021, would you consider going to his set? if yes, what level of act would you need to conflict with him in order to skip his set?
i figure even for people who are over kanye, there would be some element of "i just want to see what he's going to do" that might cause people to show up.

I dunno, I think Kanye doing any shows is risky for whoever books those shows. His last tour ended disastrously, and he's in a much worse state now. But I could see the case that his first couple of shows are the least risky, at least insofar as he's more likely to complete them (more risky perhaps insofar as you don't know what he'll do or say or how people will react).

I didn't realize at the time how lucky I was to see Kanye on the Life of Pablo tour. His meltdown was like 3 weeks later.
Daytona, KSG and Teyana Taylor's KTSE are great production wise, but Kanye has been unable to make anything I want to return to on his own. I guess Yikes was decent...but I listened to an obscene amount of Kanye from 2011-2016. Seriously, more than any other artist. I've completely stopped. He has turned me from a super fan to someone who just feels pity and shame for the guy. He would not draw me to a festival at this time, it would be morbid curiosity at this point if I attended his set.
And I'm seconding the Guns n Roses show. I had a great time at their Coachella show, and I went in extremely skeptical.

This captures my feelings of Kanye incredibly well. I too saw one of his last TLOP shows, and I went into that somewhat dreading a 20 minute rant (we basically avoided a rant, luckily), but it's nothing like the dread I'd feel seeing a new show now. Kanye went from my favorite active artist for a 5-10 year period to the point where when I hear or think of him, the overwhelming emotion is dread.
we got the 'I love Cudi' rant on Pablo tour, definitely came out ahead there. also Travis Scott rode around on the floor on a hoverboard before the show started.

Funnily enough, my stop got the "Fuck Kid Cudi" mini-rant.

"Tollet confirmed all of this to the Times and said he hopes to book Kanye to headline in the future. “He has some great [production] ideas, but we just weren’t able to pull them off right now,” Tollett said. “I’d like to circle back with him and figure out a future plan of what to do with what’s in his head…Up until Jan. 1, we were making a poster with Kanye on it. We started realizing we’re probably going to have an impasse production-wise.”"
"It sounded like a dome in the middle of the field. We had already turned our plans in for the main stage to the city and it would have been too hard to change things around."
So do this mean Kanye is finally getting his dome?
Sunday Service is a whole nother thing. nobody is going there to hear Kanye rap.
At the coachella set in 2018 (5 months after CFG btw), he played All falls down, ultralight beam, lift yourself, Jesus walks, Otis, father stretch my hands pt. 1 and 2, Power, etc. and brought out guests like chance, DMX, and Teyona Taylor. I’m not sure how this doesn’t qualify to you as a “Kanye event” but I assure you, it was.
