Are there actually people who think that an April Coachella has a chance of happening?
The Dallas Cowboys had 20k people willing to go inside ATT Stadium on Sunday. I think the demand will be there for an April Coachella, even if I wouldn't go myself. The question is if Gavin Newsom allows it or not. I'd lean toward no but I can see a world where April Coachella happens.
Big difference between 20,000 locals spread out in a stadium for three hours and 100,000 people from all over body-to-body for three days two weekends in a row. Big difference between Texas and CA in handling the outbreak. And still a substantial chance of things getting much worse again once it gets colder and outdoor activities become difficult.

this is all true but also a massive difference between indoors and outdoors.

Not when you're body-to-body. Plus two of the Coachella stages are indoors and three others are tented, reducing air circulation. And I would be surprised to see many people wearing masks all day every day at coachella.

If people had to wear masks in the Sahara and packed DoLab, there would be some tragedies
Even when you are up close on an outdoor stage during a popular act, it is very tough to breathe without a mask
If you had to wear a mask, it would be much less enjoyable, unsafe, and most people would not follow the rules
We need a vaccine for this to happen and then hope its effective and safe

It is not tough to breathe in a mask.
Depends who you ask, I am not talking about breathing while walking around the fields. I am talking about being in a packed set with sweaty bodies all around you breathing heavily.
It's tough enough to breathe at Coachella during a packed set without a mask
You ever been up close in the Sahara, DoLab or outdoor stage during a very popular act?

"Depends on who you ask" just means you read shitty news sources.

It's silly to say it's tough to breathe in a mask, but masks can get sweaty as fuck when it's hot out and do get uncomfortable after long periods. Yes, a lot of people are used to wearing masks when dust storms kick up at Coachella, but that's not all day, and those people don't care if someone else _isn't_ wearing a mask even if they themselves are. It's a personal choice, not a public health issue.
If I were to go, I would make a point of wearing one the whole time, but I seriously doubt most people would, and the longer people see everyone else not wearing one, the less likely they feel like there's a point to doing it themselves.
There is absolutely no way the state of California will give the green light for Coachella to happen in April. I doubt they even release a lineup in January.

How about bringing multiple masks? Can't imagine someone going through only one mask for the whole weekend, right?

Thats why the state needs to get off its ass and release new guidelines for this kinda thing. They need to be ready and they cant just rely on the events themselves on putting their own spin on safety and such. With Disneyland making noise there surely will be some movement. What if Riverside County gets itself into the yellow tier, whats to stop them from allowing GV to say the festival will happen? The state has been dancing around some things already by allowing certain things to still happen with modifications.
If we have to wear masks at Coachella it won’t happen. People won’t wear them. Drugs, liquor, talking, screaming lyrics. We need a vaccine.
I think people will get to a point of giving up their firstborn to go to something by the time April rolls around, theyll behave. Stagecoach on the other hand.
oooh, will this be the page where Inforoo finally realises festivals and large-scale concerts aren't coming back until at least mid-decade?
Mid-decade? Why would it be that long? I totally get people being pessimistic about next year, but why would they come back in five years and not.. you know.. never?

A ton of the smaller and mid-sized festivals will collapse well before then. I think some of the massive names like Coachella and Glastonbury will be able to afford to go into administration until there is a vaccine (or at least more effective management) - but they'll be the exception, not the rule.

Eh. You said festivals and large-scale events. Most of those are corporate-controlled. AEG and LN will get bail out money if they need it. They own a substantial portion of the market at this point. What you're describing is certainly a problem, and a problem I'm extremely sympathetic to, but it would not mark the end of festivals or large-scale events. It would likely just lead to further corporate consolidation, which is true of a ton of other industries during COVID and in the general pro-trust climate in the US (can't speak for the rest of the world on that one). We've been witnessing a collapse of small and mid-sized festivals for over half a decade. I mean, Bonnaroo sold to LN in 2015.
It is honestly comical to be thinking about festival returns during a time like this. I feel more and more disconnected with the various kinds of ads and content fests have been pushing during the pandemic.

yeah it sort of bums me out. going to shows has taken up a lot of my past few years, but i don't even really think it's that big of a sacrifice to not put any pressure on them coming back.
its a little easier to stomach when you look at it through people with jobs that dont have many options, but i sort of wish the attitude was more 'take your time' and not 'id kill to see shows'.

Yeah, how DARE any of you to even think about festivals. You all should be ashamed.

I don't think those two attitudes are mutually exclusive.
I get that returning to normal in 2021 isn't looking likely, but man everywhere on the internet people are just ITCHING to shut down the slightest glimmer of hope for 2021. It's so demoralizing.
But hey whatever, Coachella 2025 is where it's at I guess.

Thinking about festivals?? In a festival forum about a specific festival?? The nerve of some people!
I think we can all agree April is a very optimistic timeline. But people’s jobs are on the line and businesses at least want to take that gamble. I don’t fault a fest for trying until it becomes abundantly clear that it is unsafe.
