Hatsune is a legitimately cool booking. MGK just feels really trashy and dated for Coachella.
Wasn’t saying otherwise. I was more saying that Coachella booking a buttrock bands is not the craziest thing when there are so few “rules” in their booking
But GV books cool butt rock, thats the difference. Tool, GnR, Motorhead, Ghost BC, X Japan, Mastodon. Gv would go after acts like Deftones, Rammstein, Gwar and System Of A Down right now. Not Staind and Shinedown. If Scott Weiland was still alive I figure an STP reunion mightve been a plausible booking. The other thing is some of these fests have some punk acts that have played Coachella already, so who is copying who here.
BTW, Marriot seems to have picked up on a possible Octoberchella and blocked bookings for that month.

Only by an incredibly broad definition would these things be considered butt rock. These are just metal bands. Butt rock is like Seether and Saliva and stuff like that.
The closest thing to butt rock Coachella has ever booked is probably Volbeat.
That was weird lol. I was like "oh wow. Rock band playing Coachella. Must be cool. I'll check them out." They were not cool.
Some people might consider Silversun Pickups to be in that butt rock mold, too. I wouldn't, they're more like post-punk with some shoegaze in there, but they got some play on butt rock stations for awhile.
Did anyone watch Holy CalamaVote? That show would have made Coachella history. I can’t believe it because they’re so easy to see but I think RTJ is my third most wanted artist from the original lineup
Like can you imagine if they brought out ZDLR, Pharrell, Josh Homme, Mavis Staples, 2 Chainz, and Gangsta Boo while having a show so good it could have none of those guests and still be one of the best of the weekend?

We had the "is Tool buttrock" discussion a few years back. Conclusion was they are definitely on the venn diagram of butt rock.
All the same guys in their late thirties that love going to Pensacola to see Shinedown and Avenged Sevenfold also love going to Pensacola to see Tool. They like it when Maynard goes "rrraaaaawwwwerrrrrrr".
It's ok to admit that certain elements of butt rock are popular for a reason. High energy catchy pop songwriting with some adrenaline pumping moments.

Butt rock fans liking a band doesn’t mean that band is butt rock and I would not consider Tool in that genre. Looping back to MGK, I’m sure a lot of butt rock fans dig MGK but that doesn’t make himself butt rock.

If you consider butt rock by it's original definition, music played on radio stations that play "nothing but rock", Tool, Rage, and SOAD all definitely count. They're just good butt rock.

I just think there's a distinction between some alternative rock that gets played on alt radio and butt rock. I don't consider Nirvana butt rock, for example. I can see late era Weezer for some of their Beverley Hills type songs, but I think most people look at "Rivers Cuomo wrote Stupid Girl" as a piece of unexpected trivia, which would be more of an exception that proves the rule.

Nirvana was a precursor to butt-rock. There wouldn’t have been Seether, Puddle of Mud, Creed and the likes without Nirvana. I agree they aren’t butt-rock though. Blue Album and Pinkerton aren’t neither, but most of the shit after Beverly Hills totally is.
As someone who in the year 2000 had Slim Shady hair and drove a Ford Probe with a shitty, 10 inch sub rolling around in the trunk, I can assure you guys I was well versed in all things butt-rock.

I agree with much of what you're saying. We're splitting hairs. I see butt rock as mostly equivalent to post-grunge like those three you mentioned, whereas most of this other stuff mentioned falls under the categories of nu-metal (could be considered interchangeable with buttrock, sure), screamo/emo (stuff like the Used and Coheed), prog metal (Mastodon is not butt rock), thrash metal (Motorhead is not butt rock), hair metal/classic rock (GnR not butt rock). As far as butt rock is a genre and not just an alternative name for alternative rock radio artists, these things mentioned, especially in that first supre post, are not butt rock.
Point being, Coachella doesn't book stuff like Seether, Creed or Puddle of Mudd (two Ds, poser).
I mean to be fair the term has just been popularized online so there’s no concrete definition. Generic rock music is the easiest way to put it. That ranges from 30 Seconds to Mars to Three Doors Down to Incubus to Audioslave at this point. Sure, it’s easier to lump the drop D bands and ones who tried to sound like Eddie Vedder together, but the majority of “modern rock” bands tinkered with the same radio ready formula (Verse + Power Chorus + Verse 2 + Power Chorus + Bridge + Power Chorus). It was a recipe for the most bland kind of rock ever. That’s not to say hair metal was any better. It was all building up to Lips of an Angel imo. Thankfully people started doing drugs and downloading music.
