So do we get an official Coachella announcement today or Monday?
I checked back to see what their timeline was on when the order came out to making a statement and it was the same day. So it should be today and its not as if theyre getting blindsided by this news. They got some leeway last year to sort some stuff out before the order, but I think the only thing theyre getting here is its on a Friday. Statement today and then more info next week is best case.
2021 was unrealistic for festivals in California anyways, California is among the most strict states with Covid, and Los Angeles and Riverside two of the more strict counties (Orange and San Diego are relatively laid back about it). I think it's more realistic for us to hope regular sized venue shows are back by Fall 2021, I miss Coachella extremely bad and I'm bummed I'm missing two years of my Coachella 20s. But at this point I'll be ecstatic for any live music. I can see Southern states doing some festivals by Fall this year, as they're way more relaxed about Covid down there. Maybe Nashville or something around Florida will happen this year. But California is highly doubtful.
If fests don't come back in the fall(a pretty huge if) then I don't think touring makes any sort of meaningful comeback in the fall either. A lot of tours are only profitable because of festivals and it will be super risky to book a tour with every city making their own decisions regarding venue closures.

While I agree with you. A lot of people tour in the fall or winter with no festivals. Either being profitable by selling out or just breaking even and getting profit by spring NA festivals and summer Europe ones which “should” be back in 2022

Good point. There is obviously still a ton of uncertainty. I still think without one or more big pay days for bands coming from fests it could be difficult for touring to be worth it for bands if there are still some markets where shows aren't allowed. Especially if its a situation where a band is in the middle of a tour and they lose shows while the tour is happening. The risk might not be worth it. Again, like everyone else I'm just speculating.

If we're so strict, why the fuck are we having outdoor dining again. Doesnt sound like a strict county to me. If Coachella lays out a plan that says every attendee is required to have been vaccinated along with whatever else that needs to be in place, I dont see how they turn them down. You need to have something that shows the vaccine is doing its job and that normal life is returning. GV is still going to be taking a risk in 2022 if they put it on and there isnt something like that in place either. If they just say ''hey 2022 is happening and we're not going to have any restrictions'' youre opening the door for a lot of bad things to happen. 2023 is probably when they wont be asking for certain requirements cause theres legit herd immunity in place by then. Theyve had 9 months and counting to figure this out and to talk to a lot of people. And to talk the people that make the decisions if they can hold their event or not. All they have to do is say to us is '' get your vaccine and you can go to the festival'' and there will be people trying tooth and nail to get their damn shot. If EDC, Lolla, ACL, Roo etc all said the same thing, the appointment systems would crash even worse than they have been lately just for the senior citizens trying to get their vaccine. Incentivize the audience and you'll see them respond in kind. When Live Nation announced that they would potentially be requiring a negative test so you could enter one of their venues for a show, there was a giant uproar about it cause they thought that was overreaching. ( just due to privacy issues ) Now they can require proof of vaccination. A negative covid test doesnt seem that invasive now does it.
In the end, if Coachella punts to 2022, nothing is coming back at all. Cause a lot of other events that dont even have the financial backing they do wont be able to weather the challenges that will come and we're really fucked. Itll be another domino effect and itll trickle down, plain and simple.
I hope there is no October, so I can just use my wristband for W1 in April 2022. With Wrestlemania 37 in Dallas I would be able to do back to back Mania-Coachella

Nowhere in the states is as strict as we should be, but relatively speaking California is one the more strict states (Look at Arizona, Florida, Texas, etc.) . LA being tons more strict than our neighbors in Orange and San Diego, who have had outdoor dining, bars, gyms and tattoo parlors, among other things, this entire time that LA went back to closing dining again. California still doesn't allow any capacity for sporting events and big events like The Rose Bowl moved to Texas because of it. Whereas Texas and Florida allow somewhere around 25% capacity in stadiums if I'm not mistaken. IF any festival is happening this year, it's a lot more likely to be something outside of the West Coast.

Stay at home order was in place at the time of the last month of nfl games and the rose bowl. Prior to that, LA county was in the purple tier and they were allowed to hold sporting events. Rose Bowl wouldve happened if we were still in that status regardless of having an audience or not. The Rams, 49ers and Chargers got lucky they didnt have to figure out how to host a home playoff game with the restrictions. Anything else? Youre also thinking that cases wont drop down far enough to even allow it to happen. Again, require attendees to be vaccinated and add other covid protocols and you get your festival. You cant say they arent considering that idea, again, lots of time to formulate. But you seem to have your mind made up right this second that 9 months from now isnt feasible.
They’re not going to requires attendees to be vaccinated, that’s just not happening.
Elements Festival announced they will be requiring either proof of vaccination or negative covid test for 2021. Smaller fest obviously but proof of vaccination is not out of the question www.elementsfest.us/covidfaq

I meant just requiring the vaccination only and not give a testing option. Requiring each attendee to get vaccinated isn’t realistic for a festival of Coachella and I can see them getting some bad reactions if they try to roll out that policy.
I could see October ask for either proof of vaccine or test onsite but say someone camping tests positive on Saturday, I don’t know what you expect them to do. The logistics could be a nightmare. If they decide to try to do something like that, I think it would make sense to let people roll their tickets over to 2022 instead if they don’t feel comfortable with that.

i agree with you. assuming coachella is in fall 2021, i think it will be a moot point by then, everyone should have access to a vaccine by summer. and if anyone can get a vaccine, there is nobody left that a proof of vaccination policy needs to protect. if you don't want to get vaccinated and you can for free, then at that point the risk is on you.

There are people who are unable to get vaccinated even if they want to. Part of the reason there would still be efforts to reduce superspreader events even if vaccines are freely available would be to keep community transmission from rising and protect those people.
Goldenvoice won't want people getting infected at the fest even if the vaccine is widely available. I don't know what they will do but i'm fairly confident their policy won't be "you could've gotten the vaccine so if you get infected that's your problem."

Yeah idk why people are acting like Coachella is just a frat house party lmao

maybe y'all are right. and if coachella did require proof of vaccine, it might encourage some people who otherwise wouldn't get vaccinated to get vaccinated.
but i still think hospitalizations and deaths will drive when we can have festivals again. once those drop because enough people are vaccinated, then festivals will be OK to have, and at that point it won't be necessary to provide proof of vaccination. i'll be interested to see how it goes.

One of these semi-big festivals is going to try to make it happen. Coachella could take off four years and still survive, but some of these other festivals will die if they don't occur this year. Someone will take the bad press and try to make a run at it.

I think we kind of agree. I believe fests won't take place until cases and hospitalizations decrease to a fairly low number even if a vaccine is widely available.

Yeah, and I doubt their insurance would let that happen. No way are they gonna make you sign a covid waiver either.

People alread got pissed that Live Nation was going to require a negative test to even attend a show, I think they have to know what theyre in for here. And I mentioned that option a few days ago. If they went the required vaccine route and there was backlash over it, you can move your ticket to 2022 for anyone that disagrees. You further reduce the capacity which is already diminished and its just even easier for everyone to enjoy a smaller scale Coachella. If they went with testing, as you said, its a logistics thing and why be ensnared by that when you could say our way or the highway. They have a path to holding the festival, and as hardcore as it sounds, people will be frothing at the mouth to get back to it regardless. Why not be the event that motivates a decent swath of people to get the vaccine. If they announce that, everyone else will do the same thing. It has to be a consideration and GV will have to be 1000% sure theyll be allowed to have Coachella if this is what they choose to do. What county or state is going to turn down the revenue if they get that guarantee of safety from the promoter.
