This lineup better be absolutely mind-blowing if I have to wait an entire year longer for it
I'll be pretty disappointed if after all this we end up with essentially the 2020 lineup. Not that I disliked that lineup, and there are things I'd be VERY bummed to lose, but my enthusiasm has just been shot a bit.
Coachella is upwards of 125k people - way more than other fests. It's two weekends, unlike nearly every other fest. It's almost entirely people traveling in from out of town, unlike other fests. It's in California which has had the strictest COVID regulations, unlike most other fests. There was plenty of reason for optimism given the virus rollout but there were always more complications for Coachella than everyone else.
I do really hope they do something in October to fill the void, though. Much easier to limit capacity, make it CA-only, etc when you're selling tickets to a whole new event.
What about ACL? Yes I know its in Texas, but still
And is there really a huge difference between say 75k and 125k for other fests? I guess the fact that its 2 weekends, but you can just consider it another festival
CA is doing OSL though and other fests, no?
Maybe they can make up for it and just do a lot of extra shows in LA
A Frank only show would make me content
We are talking about October, not April, May or June
40M people have 2 doses, another 31M people have 1 dose
2.4M vaccines a day and it will keep rising. Say we do 2.6M a day for the next 6 months, that is about 470M more doses. 235M extra people now have been fully vaccinated, on top of the 40M already, and the 31M with 1 dose. Many people will also have single dose (Johnson and Johnson)
Kids can't even get it yet or pregnant women and many people don't want it
It can't be b/c of covid fully
I guess they thought 2 fests in 6 months would be too tough? But this is crazy, another year of them losing money and many groups who help with art, lighting, sound, food, etc
I don't think lineup would be watered down since we haven't had a lineup since 2019, so many acts out there to book
If Coachella doesn't happen, it's because they couldn't cater a line up worthy of their name. That could be due to competition from other festivals (ACL is going to be big) or they couldn't arrange tours from European acts due to travel restrictions. I really doubt it'll be because California is still limiting capacity.
Also, very hard to put together two massive 2 weekend festivals within 5 months of each other if they opted for October and April. Not even including Stagecoach. It’ll be brand saturation and GV are very careful about their public image.
Their public image if they get it wrong and things are fine in 7 months will be that GV was too scared to try and bring people a great weekend of music. The GV mystique is going to be dealt another blow cause theyre the ones that are trying to be ahead of the curve and now theyre behind.

well, that's a bummer but if it means we get the best of 2020, 2021, and 2022 it would be worth it. I was hoping for a scaled back coachella this fall.

If a half-assed 2021 lineup dropped everyone would be all over it saying how shit it is, this feels like the obvious move to make in terms of brand identity

Sad it’s being postponed again but if this means me can get Dua Lipa I would be happy . It’s going to be wild when they eventually put this on . The energy will be off the charts .

If it was say 50-75% of 2020 and some different names, it would have been great
The lineup was already good imo and now after being starved for live music, it would have even been better
LIB lineup was way worse than 2020 Coachella and sold out right away...
Welp.. looks like I'll be traveling outside of California to get my festival fix. Might even go real low and settle for a day pass at LIB at this point.
I feel like the headliners will remain the same, unless they pull in someone of Rihanna or Adele's caliber, the 2020 headliners were really just fine. I DO expect that second line to be ridiculously stacked to make up for lost time.

So are we thinking they announce this news in April or sooner . Honestly wouldn’t mind waiting to maybe get a hotel room at a decent price but on the other hand I would like to know if I can use this years PTO/fun money on something else . It’s honestly kinda awful how they haven’t said a peep not even “we are monitoring the situation “.

I can see the frustration but I understand why they wouldn’t. April is canceled and you would be foolish ti think otherwise. So they can wait until April/May to speak on it because if they say it today they will be flooded with refund requests and questions. The next time we hear from Coachella we will have the new date/refund options/rollover options
that's kinda anticlimactic. Weird that III points kept those names blurred.
Maybe the date embargos stay in place or Lolla has some.
I'm wondering if AEG's lawyers/insurance people pulled the plug. AEG self insuring the Michael Jackson 2009 London comeback dates cost them tens of millions(75 dates in 2nd biggest arena in the world - owned by AEG) while MJs kids got the rehearsal film profits. Other festivals deal with smaller $$$/risk numbers and don't have 20% international fans. As a Canadian I have no idea if I could do Lolla or ACL even if I wanted, though Biden is pushing to open the border.

Another question to ask is if were they going to get insured to begin with. I mean if the premiums were that high just for them, what is it for the others and isnt deterring them from moving forward.

Thats why I felt that June wouldve been their do or die time. You say October is or isnt happening while at the same time putting tickets onsale for the following year, with refunds/rollovers and the like. Right now just feels way too early. They werent in Glastonbury's position of having to decide much earlier because their festival build takes 3 1/2 months. Coachella sets up in 2 weeks.
They'll probably cite uncertainty around COVID-19, but I think the truth is:
1) Pulling off two rounds of Coachella in 6 months was always a huge hurdle that other festivals aren't facing.
2) They can put together a killer 2022 line-up with the best of 2021 and more exclusives and international gets in April of 2022. The alternative was risking having two watered down Coachella's in 6 months.
3) 2021 Coachella would have looked a lot like all the other major festivals -- and hurt their position as the trendsetter. They didn't like the optics/brand impact of that.
I'm really annoyed about it as I think people would have been very understanding/forgiving of a scaled back experience this year, but I get it from their perspective.
1) Probably right, I was thinking maybe next years could be in the summer to give them 9 months then the next year back to April
2 and 3) I hope so, but why would it have been watered down? Travis, Frank, and Rage aren't on other lineups (at least so far)
Summer is not possible. Temperatures are too high, it would be dangerous and there would be a serioerisk of fatalities.
Maybe the date embargos stay in place or Lolla has some.

Uhhh it takes more than just the two weeks of grounds prep to get Coachella ready. There are months and months of planning needed to make it work. March/April was the expected window to make the call for October.
Waiting until 2022 was the right move considering they are one of the earliest fests in the year. I think it's less about 'protecting the brand' or whatever and really just as simple as that. It would just feel too close together and difficult to plan simultaneously.
Pretty surprised by this, but getting back on the normal rhythm (April, not October) has a lot of value at the end of the day. Clearly, the company is doing well enough financially to take the financial hit without forcing things. Getting a pass for 2022 is going to be insanely hard, lol
So are you suggesting the 4/12 deadline is nothing more than a contractual deadline which Goldenvoice has stipulated that other festivals/artists follow regardless of them actually planning to move forward with a lineup for October?
Last I heard from friends in the industry is it's still unlikely October happens. Guessing that's more of an internal deadline for Goldenvoice to give themselves the necessary time to put this together if they change their stance.
edit: whoops should have kept going; see it formally leaked.
Secret Project Festival in LA making an announcement tomorrow.
Edit: III Points social media posting the same message. I know it was mentioned that III Points LA was suppose to happen last year. I wonder if Secret Project is combining with III Points in some form now.

kinda weird this is in like 40 days
Florida has consistently shown that they don’t care about people getting the virus and dying.
