Posting this in this thread too since I'm not sure which of these two threads will be the one going into 2021. So since it looks like we may get only some artists returning from 2020 to 2021, I decided to create a poll to gather who people would want to see get rebooked for Coachella 2021. I'm crossposting this between the Reddit sub and Facebook group to get a variety of responses. I also set it so that you can choose as many artists as you want. I'll post the results after a few days.
I know they do an event at Coachella but I don't think that announcement has anything to do with the festival. Also, not sure what encouraging news they have but anyone who claims to know anything about the outlook for early 2021 is full of shit.
I would think they had to have been told about something to make that kind of announcement. And I wouldve had that kind of email sent after Coachella made their move, not before. Just gonna tip everyone off even moreso. But the whole world is burning so its cool.
I’m guessing 2 headliners a night Frank Ocean - Rage Against the Machine - Billie Eilish - Travis Scott - Lady Gaga - Kendrick
Still think they stick with three and I’m guessing one is out but not sure who. Rage has already rescheduled for 2021 and have a strong relationship with GV but the impact of them playing in 2021 will be lessened after the election. Travis is probably the most relevant of the bunch and supposedly had new material and a huge production waiting for Coachella but could also be the most dispensable since he’s not hard to catch. Frank is a long-awaited rare get and probably had new material too but he’s obviously the most difficult to work with and I’m sure these delays don’t make think easy.
If I had to guess who would drop out, sadly I’d say Frank but with the possibility of being replaced with someone like Adele or Rihanna. I’m guessing not Billie since she’ll be making up LA shows then.

So this doesn't say "cancelled" or "postponed" BUT it does say "will not take place this October as previously rescheduled" and "new lineups". This to me sounds like a cancellation, not a postponement. That makes a big difference for contracts, insurances and third-party sellers. If so, they'll likely have to renegotiate all contracts for the artists and places like StubHub might have to offer refunds if deemed a cancellation.

Some of y'all need to get your expectations in line. They are losing a ton of money this year, why would they go out and spend double on next year's headliners? Especially when we don't even know if large scale events will be good to go by April.

All great points. Very interested to see how StubHub handles this. I sold two extra tickets back in January. At this point, I’d rather just cancel the sale and refund the tickets. I don’t want to wait until next April to get paid, as StubHub no longer pays you until after the event takes place.

They keep Rage, Travis is 50/50 and Frank is a goner. They probably had Gaga set up for a headline slot next year to follow the secret set she wouldve done. Billie still has a tour to actually do and unless AEG does some magic like when they got Ariana, I dont see it for next April. Thats money being burned for a smaller audience if theyll only be allowed to have 70,000 people into the polo fields next april. Kendrick bought himself a ton of time to mull over his new album, but there was a reason he was going to potentially start his album cycle at Glastonbury and not Coachella.
If you want to have those kind of expectations i think youll have to pair em up with a big name that couldnt be topped by somebody else thats notable. So lets say Lady Gaga has like Gorillaz as a sub, you gonna argue one can be above or equal to the other? I mean they just did that in a sense with Calvin Harris being right below Rage. Calvin was a recent former headliner and was placed second. It wasnt like Beck who headlined in 99 and then came back 15 years later. He was never gonna headline, but got 2nd billing, still respectable.
I think the door has opened for them to be able to spread their budget around more because agents can’t strong arm promoters right now. They need any kind of money coming in and prices for talent will be more fair. And they cant do that bullshit of tacking on 5 lower name acts just to get that 2nd line artist onboard.
I mean, you could argue that Prima has 6 headliners. It’s not unheard of.
Primavera is quasi-independent, they didn't make any margin off the fest this year, but they aren't taking a bath either so can afford to spend more and make a bigger splash.
AEG / Goldenvoice are losing so much money this year with their fixed infrastructures and probably close to a year of no concerts and live events that it will look much closer to 0 headliners next year (e.g. ~2 cheap promotes) than 2 headliners a night next year IMO.
I see valid arguments for both. There’s gonna be mass unemployment and music festivals are the last thing the general populace would spend a ton of money on unless they felt they had to. But yeah they lost a ton of money this year so who knows
At MOST we may get one co-headliner for Friday. I fully expect Frank, Travis, RATM to still be on plan to keep on the line up. If one is missing, it was probably the artist's decision to drop out. The 2nd line is what I expect to be 80% different. The only 2nd liners that I think are must keeps are Lana Del Rey and RTJ. I think they'll keep a couple more, but there should be a decent overhaul. Although a part of me feels like they would want to add one huge name to the poster to make it "special".. If Travis or Frank was ok with Co-headlining Friday with Rage, and put someone of the caliber of Rihanna on Saturday or Sunday.
