Where should I start to get into Beastie Boys? Only know the biggest songs (which are kinda hit or miss for me tbh... we'll see if this set changes my mind)

I think Paul’s Boutique is the best but Check Your Head has the best grab bag of all their different styles so is the best starting point
Also I’m not a huge fan of greatest hits but their “beastie boys anthology” was a pretty comprehensive collection of their work up until early 2000s
Had no idea that they played instruments until right now
they actually have multiple full releases that are just hardcore punk front to back as well as some all-instrumental compilations (they just played the track Sabrosa from one of those)

yeah I definitely felt watching it that they probably started out doing punk or something
They do look like total dads, and I came in skeptical, but they also seem like total performers. Just passionate, completely immersed in what they're doing. I'm sold. I admit that I wasn't a fan of them eleven years ago when they headlined, or some of the bands that claimed inspiration from them in the years afterward, but I finally get it now.

they started out as a punk band, most of Licensed to Ill were dumb party songs they didn’t like. For Check Your Head and Ill Communication, they rented a cabin and learned how to play. You should watch the doc.

If you’re interested in getting into Beasties, do Check Your Head and Ill Comm. order doesn’t matter since they were recorded basically in the same sessions. Paul’s Boutique is good. Licensed to Ill has a lot more good songs than it’s credited for (Shes Crafty, The New Style).
