Friday: 1: Nine Inch Nails 2: Rufus Do Sol 3: Pom Pom Squad
Saturday: 1: Nine Inch Nails 2: Hinds 3: Run the Jewels
Sunday: 1: Goose 2: Metallica 3: Djo
Despite all the shit thrown at it, they managed to turn it into a solid weekend. It is too bad that they got so fucked over with all the cancelations but I feel like I made the most of it and I hope all of you were able to too. Already looking forward to being back next year!
Pros: Nine inch nails - came in last minute and played 2 completely different sets and both absolutely rocked. Heroes. Blue stage - had the best crowd and sound all weekend Goose - best set of the weekend for me, everything about it ruled Lines - until earlier tonight I didn’t have to wait more than 5 minutes in any line, never had to wait for bathrooms The very easy walk from red/green to blue The schedule - was able to catch some of just about everyone I wanted to see
Cons: Red stage - why was the sound so consistently terrible? Only act that actually sounded great was Rufus Vip sections at red and green - they don’t need that much space, don’t know why they couldn’t have set every stage up like blue Would have been nice to have a second water station somewhere on the way from red to blue the music before Rufus on Friday ranged from agressively bad to not very good (excluding Pom Pom squad)
Another one in the books. while i may mumble and grumble about the lineup direction i can definitely see myself coming back next year, felt so good and so right to be back on the fields. While it was unfortunately marred by terrible weather, last min covid cancellations, it was a pretty decent weekend.
Top 5 1. NIN (set 1) 2. Japanese Breakfast 3. NIN (set 2) 4. Rufus Du Sol 5. Metallica hm: Pom Pom Squad, Horsegirl, Paris Texas
Hope they go back to a more multi genre direction as they did in the past harvard editions
Goose was legit, had a hell of a time with them and wouldn’t have changed it, just think GA deserved better/could have put on a better show
I enjoyed them both a lot, although I wish that Boston Calling had given Goose more time. They already had 10 minutes of overlap between Goose and Metallica, they could have easily added another 15 minutes to their set and let them play for a full 90 minutes.

I can't help but feel that they're going to be stuck on bringing back previously cancelled headliners, aiming for a top line of Foo Fighters, Rage Against The Machine, and The Strokes (which means yet another RTJ set, which could have otherwise gone to an artist that hasn't played Boston Calling three times already).
Whomever they book, it's time to revamp the art design of poster, website, wristbands, etc. We've seen so many festivals create eye-catching and colorful posters this year, while Boston Calling opted for a color scheme and fonts reminiscent of totalitarian regime communiques.

they aren’t rebooking rtj, or probably any of those names. The only one I could see happening is rage, and maybe king Gizz just because they’re goddamn insane

Yeah would have loved another 15-20 min, honestly I can’t imagine anyone trying to make it back over to see any of Metallica likely not even getting off of the turf. I knew it was full yesterday, but I was pretty surprised just how packed it was when I walked back over

Yeah I think if there’s a chance for Rage 2023, it will be 2 months after they wrap up their current tour dates, a month after a possible Coachella rebook, I think that’s separated enough not to “need” to book RTJ alongside them.

The Red Stage sound reminds me of the Which Stage. Super inconsistent sound.
Really like the security at the entrance. Felt like you could bring in anything that wasn't a weapon. I saw a guy with a 2 liter bottle of seltzer. More festivals should use that security system.
Overall had a good time for a spontaneous 2 day freebie. Food wasn't crazy priced, lines were mild to nonexistent, good bathroom access, good crowd and an especially older crowd Sunday.

So I only went two days this year because after the Strokes cancelled the only acts I really wanted to see were Orville and King Gizz that day so that ended up being a good choice, but I gotta say despite everything I find Boston Calling always puts on a pretty excellent festival.
My two major grievances are as mentioned the sound at Red which has always been a terrible stage was extra terrible this year. And while the blue transformation isn’t great it also wasn’t terrible minus the color of the tiling which cooked so many people I talked to. There used to be a venue with blue tiling like that which I think should be the move going forward.
I loved the security though it definitely made me a little anxious initially. Except for right before Metallica lines were never an issue anywhere except for at Merch. I think they over sold Sunday to make up for previous days but it didn’t really bother me. Ultimately a pretty strong chance I’ll come back next year it’s just a really easy fest for me to do, and I always have fun.
Top Sets 1) Japanese Breakfast - I’ve always liked them being from Philly but they’re coming into their own and are now a very special live act in my opinion. An especially excellent rendition of Diving Woman. 2)Avril Lavigne - There’s something to be said for the nostalgia factor. She was sick but I still had so much fun. 3)NIN (Friday) - After having weather fuck them up for me twice that was just terrific. Wasn’t anticipating dancing so much. 4)Metallica - Went un with very low expectations, but the musicianship was insane. Especially Kirk: 5)Haim - Some weird banter, but ultimately I enjoyed it a lot. Their catalog is stronger than they get credit for. 6)Goose - I do not like Jam bands. That being said I’m already trying to figure out how to see Goose again. I get strong Steely Dan vibes. 7)Glass Animals - might’ve been all the weed around me that gave me a nice buzz but I had fun. Too hot. I hate sundown sets 8) Horsegirl - Clearly very inspired by Sleater-Kinney. Once they got over nerves they rocked. 9) Pom Pom Squad - Bad setting, but they killed it. A very good live band both times I’ve seen them this year. 10) Modest Mouse - Only got the second half, and there’s some favoritism going on here. But the band lineup on this album cycle is real fucking good. They make some of the regulars that were sounding a bit tired last album cycle sound fresh. Tiny Cities Made Of Ash was great yesterday!

Just got home after a fun 3 days in Boston. Thanks to Inforoo BC veterans who shared tips to help this first-timer. A quick recap:
Things we liked:
Travel to/from the grounds was a snap- parked at Alewife Station garage on the T Red Line, bought 7-day unlimited trip passes for $22, three stops to Harvard Square. The scenic 10-15" walk from there goes through "downtown Harvard" and across the Charles River. It was electric yesterday- Harvard Graduation as we arrived, and fans watching/celebrating Celtics Game 7 win as we left, overflowing the bars and streets, which were closed to vehicular traffic. The festival grounds are laid out nicely, plenty of artificial turf and grass to walk and sit on. "Human gridlock" was only encountered briefly between Weezer and Metallica. Entry and exit were a breeze. Food/beverage offerings were fine- lines were long during Sunday's dinner hour, but I usually pick the shortest line or eat at off-hours. The Mikeller beer tent was a great oasis. Pricey, but at my age I go for quality drinking, since I can't do "quantity" any more! No lines for water. Plenty o' potties with no lines.
Things we didn't like:
Red Stage sound- as others have mentioned, was off- no matter where we set up, vocals were often hard to hear. A second water station, closer to Red/Green stages, would be convenient. A fair amount of pushing/shoving to the front near set start time. That's about it.
Favorite sets:
Metallica- I've had only casual interest in them (and one CD) previously, but they blew us away! A 2-hour, old-school, balls-to-the-wall thrash fest. I now understand how, after 41 years, they continue to pack in a crowd. They certainly seemed to make Sunday a huge success for BC. Haim- I love their recent "Women in Music, Part 3" album, which they played 7 songs from. Nine Inch Nails Friday set- they played every song I wanted to hear! couldn't be happier with this "substitution". Avril Lavigne- wasn't expecting more than a few nostalgic moments, but the whole set was a fun blast. Black Pumas- these newbies to the scene put on an hour set like seasoned festival veterans. Weezer- lots of bands start as a bar/cover band, then write and improve original songs. Weezer's done the opposite- but a huge crowd packed in and sung along to a favorites-stacked set.
HM- Run the Jewels, Modest Mouse, Glass Animals, Cheap Trick.
Overall, a great time. I think Boston Calling deserves huge credit for weathering a 2+ year shitstorm of events beyond their control, and delivering a great 3-day festival.

Given the lack of inspections, that couldn't have been a simple metal detector. With those, you're asked to remove keys and such from your pockets.
My best guess is that it's some sort of x-ray/metal detector powered by AI software, which can tell the difference between a potentially dangerous item and something harmless, and then alert staff/security if there's an issue, without someone needing to stare at a video monitor or inspect the contents of your pockets.

Found this video showing a demo of the system
Every concert venue should put this in place. It's so much more efficient than the security check procedures we've seen used at some Boston venues in the last 10 years, plus it limits physical contact with your possessions in our current situation.

i agree, the only reason why i could see patdowns never going away though is that Boston has extremely strict laws on smoking indoors and underage drinking. For outdoor venues though this thing seems especially perfect

only went Friday/Sunday but i agree with most of the takeaways that have been said here already. my major thoughts:
there was about twice as many people there Sunday compared to Friday, which kinda sucked. friday was so great and easy to get a good spot for sets late into the day, i totally forgot how crowded that field can get and ended up way in the back for most of sunday. oh well.
red stage sound was absolute trash, no clue what they did to make it so bad. the volume was way too low. Rufus was great but i think everything else i saw there was very underwhelming, especially sunday when i was farther back from the stage, it sounded like background music instead of an actual band playing.
i didnt think i really cared about NIN but holy shit they were good. i had no clue it was going to be so funky/danceable. was expecting just a lot of loud industrial rock noise but was really blown away by how good they were

I went only Saturday-Sunday but agree with everything. The Red Stage was garbage unless you were 50-100 feet or less from the stage - the Blue stage was better in every way, outside of the white tiles on the floor.
ah yeah, meant to add that the blue stage being covered instead of turf and getting rid of the bleachers really ruined the vibe there for me. unfortunately i didnt have a lot of time over there based on the schedule, but the changes were definitely disappointing

Yep they definitely had a sign that mentioned AI. It's refreshing to see a festival actually care about security instead of someone bringing in a weed vape or camelbacks full of water. It's a small part of the "user experience" but I've had suncreen and blankets taken from me before from Bonnaroo so it was nice surprise.
