It's a graffiti wall (they have live street/graffiti artists throughout the festival and then auction those walls off to charity). I liked the OG one with the whole lineup better.

Vieux,
I'll hit you up with some recommendations you'll probably want to check out based on what I know you like. We didn't get any really hard bands (Sullivan King does play guitar and is kind of metal-industrial-EDM) or any jam this year, but there's a lot of modern singer-songwriter-producer stuff and a lot of female singers/rappers as well. If you go to their website and click on the lineup - link at www.thebukuproject.com/lineup/, each artist has a down arrow that you can click for a write-up and then links to their social media accounts. For starters, you might know some of these but if you don't, check out
Friday: 100 Gecs (annoying but possibly a fun show); A Hundred Drums (lady dub producer); FOUSHEE'; SHYGIRL (English rapper/singer/producer); Tierra Whack (rapper);
Saturday: Amelie Lens (Belgian Techno producer); Flo Milli (glam chick rapper); Kali Uchis (singer/performer from Columbia via Virginia); TSHA (producer); NCOGNITA (rapper/singer/poet)
There's a lot of local female rappers, artists, producers, etc. you'll see. And then there's the house and techno which you're into more than me but certainly J. Worra, Lane 8, Dom Dolla, John Summit

readyforfest91 - We'll be in Too Buku but I'll catch you in VIP. HMU closer to the festival and I'll make sure to find you and buy you a drink.
And Bing, I'm going to try you one more time on this. I've watched a couple streams of Amelie Lens, but what all do I need to know and check out before seeing her? I'm obviously not as excited for that Belgian artist as I was for Brutus. But I do plan to pay my respects.

I have no problem with fonts being mimicked like graffiti, I even think it's creative. I have a problem with the top-down (there's like 3 categories) but still alphabethical way of ordering plus the fonts (graffiti, bigger font or not, font in italic) being varied in itself. Like pick a way of structuring your poster lol. It's everything mashed together.

Oh shit, I forgot that you messaged me a while ago and never came back to you. I'm sorry. I think watching a couple of streams is probably enough to get a good glampse of what to expect. I don't think I've seen her live yet though I think she can play pretty versatile sets. She can go pretty acid (I think that's what she likes to play the most), more harder stuff (like Berlin techno) but also more minimal. The praise for her doesn't come from out of nowhere ofcourse since she's been on the rise since idk 2018? Well deserved she's getting big dollah-placements on these festivals across the ocean.
Yeah, I don't know. It appears that what the designer did was alternate each regular styled white letter act between italicized and normal. Colorized are the bigger acts with only Tyler on his day and Tame on their day at the top. Font size of the rest appears to be based on relative size of that act's popularity or at least the way they were booked. So maybe they could still do it alphabetically but throw some props out here and there to artists like Vince who in my mind should have been in color.
Edit thanks. I found some variations as well. You never know at Buku kind of depends on where someone is playing at what the vibe is at the moment. I planned on going to see Black Madonna a couple years ago, and she busted out a super-hard set that I didn't see coming. Shit was great. Amelie should be pretty cool too and a little variation from what I'd usually go to see. So that's all good.

Sounds good will definitely do that and have to make it happen after all these years of similar fests in the area!
Aw shit you never been? It used to be an outside stage along the river, a giant warehouse (Float Den) an indoor venue (Ballroom) a back alley way along the river and VIP was on a tethered riverboat. But after the dock got hit in the late teens, they had to change shit up and allocate new spaces because underneath where the float den was is fucked. It skews young (depending on what you go see), but originally it was later era Gen Y’s festival here. A bunch of them still go. Crowds are very diverse, lots of skin, plenty of freaks, trippers, etc. I went all the years but the first one. I saw one semi fight with two dudes rolling on the ground only to be broken up, chastised by people passing by and apologizing. They have full bars pretty much all over which is great for me since I’d rather not drink beer all day if I don’t have to. Everyone’s always been friendly with me, and the setting along the river and train tracks, by the old bombed out power plant and shit makes it very industrial which they’ll deck out at night with lights. Fun shit and a breezeway area where they do pop up type live performances that they don’t tell you about. Shit you’ll just see if you’re passing by and whatever is going on catches your interest for a few minutes. But yeah definitely let me know if you decide to go.

Oooo na I meant me and you always end up planning same fest but never met up. I only went to Buku once though the year ASAP Rocky and empire of the sun played and had a great time but has definitely been a while since that year. 99% going for that Saturday tho I’m really excited for that day.
I’ve never been to NOLA but I’m coming up for Buku. Where should I stay? What should I eat while I’m in town?
Vieux’s house. She’s reasonable on the rates. If money is no object stay in the Warehouse District or CBD where you’re like a mile or less away. There’s a post from a few years ago on Travel thread on The Other on restaurants. It should mostly be in tact but there’s a lot of new shit and some things that didn’t come back from the pandemic. But if you say how many days you’re in (as in how many meals) and what you want to try or like to eat, and if money is a consideration, we can throw you out some recommendations you won’t be upset with.

We will be getting there early Friday morning and heading out Sunday afternoon. Money isn’t too much of an issue for us, I think we all intend to spend a good but of cash on food and stuff, and spend less on our accommodations (unless it’s like a notoriously unsafe area or something) We obviously want to get some good crawfish etoufee, but other than that we are just trying to absorb as much culture as we can while we are there!
Yeah word. Last couple years it ran from 3-12. In the past it was like 2-2, but they run after shows til 5/6. Once y’all get a place let us know the area as there should be creole close by and likely to be other shit in the vicinity worth a stop. Depends on area and time of day or night for the most part. They usually have some decent vendors at the festival but it’s not at the level of Voodoo or certainly not remotely food level of Jazz Fest. It’s been since 2019 though so it depends on who they bring in. Once they announce the food lineup we can see which bases might be covered there. But yeah let us know where you get that crib and we can get you to what you want

You are so cute esteban. Seriously, I would agree with the CBD or Warehouse/Convention Center area. You are still in the action of the festival, plus within walking distance of food and non-fest fun.

Never been to Buku before, but I just moved to MS and this is looking enticing. Is NOLA weather consistently nice in late march? Most of the outdoor concerts I bought tix for in the last year were rainy so I'm still a little hesitant to pull the trigger on this.

I mean it rains in March, but it has never been horrible Buku weekend that I remember. It was wet a couple times and really cold, but usually it is sunny and 60s-70s.

I would definitely worry more about temperature being on the river it can get very cold at night. If there is rain it will be a very small amount nothing compared to what it could be a month later.
Cool, thanks guys. I think I'm gonna do it. Been 2+ years since my last music fest and I am so ready for my next hit
Sweet. You'll have a good time if you like the acts. There's some fairly wild local shit (most of which I haven't seen yet in person) on there worth a pass-by. Odd the Artist, 504Icygirl and certainly Treety. It's not probably appropriate for most work environments, but Treety is fucking wild. I'll put this one video of Party Party in the spoiler brackets because it's at least PG-13+.
A couple of night shows should be announced in February. For anyone who maybe is coming in the day before (Thursday), Ministry, The Melvins and Corrosion of Conformity are playing Thursday at Fillmore at the Casino downtown. My daughter works there sometimes, so I will be in attendance hopefully for free. I remember seeing COC back in the hardcore days. They were kind of a 3 piece thrash band mixed with HC and I think were from North Carolina. Our friend Pepper Keenan joined them later in their career and probably still plays with them today as well as his band Down. I only saw Ministey once which was Lollapalooza 1992 which is in my Top 10 all time shows. Melvins I caught at the beginning of their career and it was a pretty bad show. They were even saying they wouldn’t even be able to give away albums. But then I saw them at Voodoo in 2014 and they were uncanny good. So all three should hopefully kick ass and make up for the rock I’m not getting at Buku 2022.
When do they release the schedule for this? I might try to make it on Saturday. I just got tickets to the Kaleo show at the Fillmore on Friday for me and my wife. She likes them and doesn't like much so I just booked everything without checking out what else was happening that weekend. I should have known something was up when I saw the hotel prices. Anyway, if I can get her to commit to another night in town then I'd love to see Vince and Tyler again. esteban , tell your daughter to hook me up on Friday night. She owes me for that pizza that one night after Voodoo. (just joking but tell her I said what's up)
I might be going solo saturday if my wife leaves me for the Kaleo guy. Good for her if she can make it happen. He's pretty and sings real good.
Haha. I texted her your post. She would totally get you VIP except me and her will be at Buku. We are the only ones who got Super VIP, and it’s not like Voodoo where they drive you behind the stages in a golf cart. So I’ll be back and forth between the free whiskey and wandering stages. Schedule used to come out earlier but since it’s AEG/Goldenvoice, they’ve released it on the app maybe 2-3 weeks out. Vince and Tyler won’t conflict. Tyler likely gets the main stage last set like 9:30-11 or however late they run outside. Vince will probably be in the late afternoon to early night and likely in The Ballroom. They’ve been closing nights with a rap set since they started ending the fest at midnight which is a possibility too. Recents sets I can sort of remember being at were Flatbush Zombies, Isaiah Rashad, Carti when he actually rapped and some other higher end midcard shit.
Ima DM you something she told me other than, “damn, that’s Buku and it will be hard to tell without her being there but that she’ll be able to gauge it better closer to the show as to how much it’s selling and get back with you. You already know we will be out until 4/5 both nights depending. So if you get the late night hall pass, we will 100% be at whatever they give to Liquid Stranger to curate and the other night, if there’s any decent hip hop, we would either do that or catch the hardest overnight EDM show assuming they didn’t go rave or house heavy.
So tickets are shipping out this week, but the schedule isn't out yet?
No because it's still a month away. This IS [tm] AEG/Goldenvoice. Look for them to release it on the application (<-- old guy term) either 2 or 3 Fridays before the festival. Also they need to start spitting out some of the night shows so I can decide what I'm going to do.
I don’t do my nails, but this is kind of a cool giveaway with the wristbands. I like the dice and spraypaint can. 3 weeks from tomorrow so hopefully the schedule is out next week and the night shows start dropping early next week.
Sweet. I'm still waiting on mine, but I got a shipping notification the other day. I got the app, but it doesn't have much on it yet - just 3 screens with notification preferences and wristband setup. They usually have a pretty good app, so it will be updated in the next few days. They haven't teased the schedule, but I'm hopeful that we'll get some news on either that or one or two of the night shows today or tomorrow. They did have a Channel 26 piece on GLBL WRMNG which is Pell, Kr3wcial and Sleazy EZ.
