I had a friend move there, hated it and then move back here.
She said people weren't friendly and it was hard to make friends.
tbh I understand someone moving here from New Orleans especially and not vibing with it at all but I feel like everywhere has good and bad people and it’s hard to judge a place based on that. I feel like if I moved to New Orleans and didn’t know any of you all it wouldn’t really be easy for me either.

I had nothing but a ball the 7 or 8 times I went there. I love Chicago. I love Los Angeles. I never been to Denver or NYC, but I’m sure they would also both be great.
There’s no free pass for New Orleans. It will pay. But it is far and away the most unique place from the 20 originally offered. And our contributions to food and actual music dwarf pretty much everyone but NYC. The food list will come out in the punishment round.
I had a good time the few times when I went to Chicago, I just never went there on purpose, and feel no need to go back
I think what really baffles me about Chicago is that is the only city that I can't think of one person I know that ever moved to there. Everyone just moves out
The majority of people I know here moved to Chicago from somewhere else.

What "actual music" contributions from New Orleans are dwarfing Chicago? What does "actual music" mean? Jazz origins?

I mean, I assume people move there, I literally don't know any though. The only person I know from that area moved back from NYC when she lost her job. That's why it baffles me. I know more people that have moved to Boise or St Louis than Chicago. I know about 10 people that moved to Atlanta. A bunch to DC, Denver, Houston, Austin, Miami, but not one person to Chicago.

literally like half the people I know that live in Denver came here from chicago lol
I know a lot of people who moved to Chicago from other places, a lot of people who are from the area who still live here, and a lot of people moved somewhere else from Chicago. Don't really think it means anything other than it's very easy to move to other places now compared to most of history.

Yes. We aren’t talking trends or styles. It’s America’s contribution to music. You (hopefully) know better.

Clearly.
I wish that rock from overseas could have found some good American music to be influenced by from Chicago. If only.
Not the point. Chicago is an amazing city with a mammoth contribution to music. Blues flourished there, rock, jazz, opera, soul - we could go on. Maybe turn dick mode off instead of snarking?

It's an utterly ridiculous statement to claim that New Orleans' contributions to music "dwarf" Chicago. I'm not snarking - it was an absurd statement.

Jazz is an art form in itself. High art.
I'm not against jazz or New Orleans' contributions.
I do have an issue with absolutist stances on which cities have the most musical contributions because it's a complex topic that depends on the perspective of what origins you're giving attribution to.
In the case of Chicago there is a long history of white European artists basically lifting the music wholesale and reappropriating it. What credit goes where is in the eye of beholder.
But you’re arguing something that misses the entirety of the argument. Chicago also has Buddy Guy and plenty of African American artists that stretched out their craft in a host of genres from blues to gospel to jazz, funk and rock. It’s got big names in rock throughout that era’s decades - from Styx mid 70’s before they went pop, Naked Raygun in the hardcore era of the early 80’s, Smashing Pumpkins, Chance, Eddie Vedder, Herbie Hancock I’ll finally get to see at Bonnaroo, Nils Lofgren - shit I saw Ministry last week though I think they live in Texas now. The point was we, a medium sized city at best, gave the world an art form that evolved from traditional and Dixieland into Bill Bruford, Frank Zappa, Dave Brubeck, Jeff Beck, Jeff Lorber, Jan Hammer, Miles Davis, George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Coltrane, Buddy Rich, Billie Holiday, Stan Getz. I’m stopping there. The best of the best musicians who play/played it represent the art form. And that’s the contribution. At a higher level, it’s America’s #1 gift to the musical arts which makes it untouchable.
Admittedly this is Inforoo where discussion often focuses more on accessibility, so-called banger songs. But that’s all temporary. Jazz is.
The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin have some good albums.
If people want to penalize Chicago because Frankie Knuckles is responsible for Swedish House Mafia existing then I suppose that's fair.
No penalties for Chicago. Those bands also have songs specifically mentioning Chicago (When the Levee Breaks, Johnson’s Sweet Home Chicago) and New Orleans (Royal Orleans for Zeppelin and certainly the now shit canned Brown Sugar for New Orleans).

if I learned anything living in Tuscaloosa for a decade it's that Chicago > University of Alabama > Denver is an incredibly popular life plan for people whose parents make approximately $150k a year
time to make a confession: I've never been to NYC lol
Me either.
Also said friend that moved to Chicago, was originally from South Dakota and has lived in a bunch of places before moving to Nola first, then Chicago and back. She's left Nola a few times but, there's no place like here.
Also NOLA is super friendly, I've never heard of anyone having issues making friends here. Southern hospitality is a real thing.
well someone sure is passionate about being cold 😂 enjoy that king
I just don't know why so many people act like it's the end of the world. It's way easier to fix being cold than being hot.
Maybe for you, but not for me. I also enjoy the heat, I do not enjoy being cold. Just because it is easy for you does not make that universal and your point valid. Just like me loving the heat does not mean that everyone should get over being so hot.
