Made a stop to see Irreversible Entanglement and not only was the show great, it is the best name for a band ever.
Even better than the band that NBF, tronik and I are starting. Dead Presbyterians. First album “Holy Con Job”. First song on the album “The Birds, They Sing For You(Main Character Syndrome)”.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Wish I hadn't run out of steam last night... Definitely regretting missing Son Lux and Caterina Barbieri. But those delayed start times were too much for my exhaustion (12:45 AM start time for Barbieri!)

Today’s picks…
-> (10:00 AM; Visit Knoxville) Essential Tremors Live w/ Stephen O'Malley -> (12:30 PM; Old City PAC) Morton Subotnick -> (2:15 PM; St. John's ) Music of Éliane Radigue -> (5:15 PM; Jackson Terminal) caroline -> (7:00 PM; Tennessee) John Zorn w/ Christian McBride & Dave Lombardo -> (9:00 PM; Mill & Mine) Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos -> (10:00 PM; Tennessee) John Zorn: Cobra (final 30 minutes)
Welp. Gonna be a heavy heavy emotional day in Big Earsland.
Who is gonna get you good today?
You shoulda seen me at Iron and Wine and The Weather Station. An inch from full sob. Iron and Wine was right after I had put some of Whoreshack’s ashes at The Tennessee Theatre. He did a super emotional, stripped down Flightless Bird(American Mouth) that got me good. But then he did Naked As We Came directly followed by a cover of Waitin’ For Superman and I swear to god we weren’t alone.

Would love to hear your answers to something I've been musing on...
Scene: Alternate-reality Big Ears 2023 John Zorn's 'Cobra' will feature 13 musicians, and a contest is held for a lucky attendee to choose who, of ALL the performers over the WHOLE weekend, will be included. You win. Who do you choose??

So did anyone else not get notices on capacity or did they just not do them? I know Jackson hit for a lot of shows I was at but never received word it was full.
Also wondering if anyone else thought the Civic Auditorium wasn't worth it? I never made it there but I heard stories about people going. I met a couple who asked me if i wanted to split an Uber just to head that way.
It felt like longer queueing just to get into venues just because of increased festival capacity for one venue that wasn't used by a lot of people.
Maybe that's just me though.
Anyhoo, 2024 wishlist:
Richard Dawson Ezra Collective Tim Hecker Gilla Band Cian Nugent FACS Model/Actriz Scree

I was not getting all of the notifications until I deleted the app and reinstalled it. But even then it seemed like only a subset of the venues that hit capacity or had a late start were announced.
As for the Civic, my friends (who weren’t on GroupMe) and I thought it was an awful space (in sound, location, and in vibe)… but I know others who were in the chat thought it was fine. We disliked it so much that we altered our schedules to avoid it for the rest of the event.
And the queues, in general, definitely felt longer. The Standard, in particular, was ridiculous. If that’s your main venue, VIP is a waste of money (the combined lines meant the venue was half full by the time I got in, and my seat on the floor VIP only had a sight line to the backs of the audience).
Anecdotally, the delayed starts also felt more frequent. I’m not really sure if it was any worse than previous years, or if I was just more sensitive to the schedule conflicts they were creating this year. I decided to do “Dry January” this year, and ended up continuing it indefinitely; maybe I just needed a beer
The weirdest thing, imo, is that the only schedule that announced David Byrne was doing live Q&A after the films related to him, was on the Google Sheets version. I don’t recall them announcing that anywhere else (unless I missed it?). While I was standing in line at the J&R, someone mentioned there were only around a dozen people when he was speaking after “True Stories.”

I have little to compare to because I have only attended 2014 and this one. But I was perfectly satisfied with the festival. GL gave everyone the most up to dates. I ended up at every single show I wanted to be at. I missed a part of some shows, but I was okay with that and expected it. I remember having to wait in lines in 2014 for the room to open up.

Loved it all. Will def do it next year.
I’m jealous that you were at the 2014 fest. Such an amazing lineup. I missed the first three (2009, 2010, 2014), but haven’t skipped a year since I started in 2015. Hope to meet you and others I missed in 2024!

If I was VIP, I would have not been happy. The money spent isn't something you just spend on haphazardly. The combination of VIP/Premier lines could have been better handled.
As far as the Standard goes though, I can't figure out where they'd put a VIP section that would make everyone happy. There's the balcony but then you run into ADA problems. I wouldn't be surprised to see them just make that venue that doesn't have that in the future.
As someone who had Premier, it was more my speed. I never stressed about getting in somewhere. I'd seriously think about downgrading next year and doing that.
Save you enough money to go to Oblivion Access with me next year, too.
Last time I was there was 2015, looks like things have evolved quite a bit. I almost pulled the trigger this year but vacation time evaporated before I had a chance. Looks like everyone had a good time and came out relatively unscathed...besides Garageland's ankle.
