honestly it's not even really their fault. the lineup wasn't good, but it's just a bad year/time for fests in general. the big multigenre ones are losing some steam in favor of smaller, more genre and demographically targeted ones. there's a recession, a few years of covid, and it's easy to see why this is happening. hell, even Coachella wasn't moving tickets during the presale last week.
I had a good deep conversation with one of their main marketing people who came to visit us, pretty much about that. They fully consider 2022 to be a reboot / investment year and they intend to swing for the fences in 2023.

glad to see you're back carrying Bonnaroo's water, i was worried when you were criticizing them last week that you had suffered a head injury or something
Honestly the only time the crowd really "felt" small was at femi kuti. I was able to walk right up to the rail as he started. But it filled in pretty well.
I never felt that sort of crushed -in cattle call feeling in a slow moving mass of people moving about in centeroo. Was easy to bounce around to different shows, find a shady spot to sit down and rest. I don't know if these attendance numbers are sustainable for the production and logistics costs, but I'd be fine with this sort of attendance moving forward.
tbf re that femi set, the shaded areas were slammed they were just really far from the stage
lol it kind of doesn't matter what stance we take, we're either haters or fanboys either way. I guess it's a good sign that I'm staying fair if I get critique for either stance.
So is AC no longer involved in the festival at all? I knew Live Nation was handling fest production and logistics, but I thought AC was still doing the booking.
They had a woman on the live stream that said she’s one of four talent buyers. I told my wife that I bet AC is throwing in a few like Femi and Herbie. The woman seemed like she was probably responsible for the country stuff, probably another that’s jam band bluegrass, one that’s edm and another that gets all the pop stuff.

I mean, yeah. That guy ticked me off, some people snooped at his profiles and turns out he wasn't even there.
Either way I appreciate that you don't go to the level of complaining about everything or the opposite and complain about nothing. I think you are perfectly realistic and honest.

If both extremes complain it probably means you're doing something right. It was great to see you hyping the fest and being critical right to them directly on Twitter. Bonnaroo can't get better with full circle jerking or just focusing on the negative.
Maybe it's because this was only my second roo, but if no one told me it was a low attendance year I don't think I would have ever been like "damn there's not a lot of people."

good to hear they plan to sell more tickets next year

I’m fairly certain that they planned to sell more tickets this year, they just couldn’t do it.
On a call right now with a hotel in Nashville and they saw more demand for a “Woodstock type festival in Tennessee this weekend” than the CMA Festival the week before

This is a roastable post because it's pure spin, surely you can see that. I'm sure the marketing person was very nice and you felt a real human connection, but this is pretty boilerplate.

I can't think of any smaller festivals that are doing great either

I get that other fests aren’t selling well but Roo has one of the strongest dedicated bases of any festival. Also, I’m not sure any other fest sold at like 40% capacity.
